Amy Lee announces NEW Evanescence album!

Well, I am curious. I loved their first album and I honestly hope they return to a sound that is very similar to that.

Can we even call the band Evanescence anymore? They oughta call themselves Amy Lee & This Week's Hired Musicians, because she's driven everyone else out of the band.

In my opinion, Amy Lee IS Evanescence. I love the previous stuff, hopefully the new stuff won't be too much of a change.

I'm surprised Amy Lee hasn't decided to just go solo.

:hehe:

Fo' realz. Her crew bolted and formed Evanescence Lite with Carly Smithson (if anyone remembers her from Idol a year or 2 ago). Honestly, though, the new group isn't bad at all. I'll be seeing them in May when they open up a show I'm going to. They're called We Are The Fallen if anyone's curious.

Well, Guns N' Roses is only Axl Rose and a bunch of hired musicians too, since all the original members left except for Axl. But GnR is still GnR because of Axl.

Exactly. You can have all new members...but as long as the lead singer remains the same, the band remains the same.

So as of this moment it's JUST Amy Lee?

Na. Pretty sure the new line-up is set, which is why there's finally talk of a new album.

Actually, I've been recently been calling them Axl & What Should Be Velvet Revolver.

Finally, a new album. It doesn't surprise me they're going with a slightly different sound. They said the same thing for The Open Door, and Amy has said she never likes to produce the same types of albums twice.

I'm excited for a new album, though I still need to pick up Green Day and Breaking Benjamin's newest albums as well.

In a way, Amy IS Evanescence, but the differences were noticable in the rest of the band from album to album. I think that in a way, the lead singer does make the band, but there are some band members, like Eddie Van Halen, that make the band. Some people don't think Nightwish is Nightwish anymore without Tarja on vocals, but I only own their latest album with Annette as the singer.

In some cases that is true. But in Nightwish's case it was a severe blow to them when Tarja was removed from the band. However, the band would truly fall into an oblivion if Tuomas were to leave or disband them. He has the lead songwriter and he is what drives the band.

I have all of Nightwish's albums and I definitely believe they lost a great piece when Tarja left.

But with Amy Lee she is the focal point of the band and their sound isn't so distinctive to where if a guitarist, drummer, or a bassist leave that it would be that noticeable in my opinion.

I agree that a new guitarist isn't that noticable in Evanescence, especially since they change styles slightly with every album, but in some cases, the lead singer doesn't always make the band who they are.

As for Nightwish, I tried to listen to their earlier albums, but for some reason I can't get used to Tarja. It sounds like she tries to stay in one vocal range too much and doesn't let her voice really go, whereas Annette seems to really thow her voice into great places. *shrug* I also really like Within Temptation.

Foreigner has never had the same line-up on any of their albums, and since Lou Gramm left to pursue a solo career, Mick Jones is the only original member left (and the founder of the band), though Thom Gimbel has been with the band for 15 years, and Brian Tichy has been with them on and off for the past 10 years, and I still think Foreigner is just as awesome now as they were on their first album.

On topic though, never been a big fan of Evanescence, so I'll probably catch what gets played on the radio, but not in any hurry to pick up one of their CDs.

So which one makes the band, the singer or the band who went for a new singer?

Bands Who Replace Their Lead Singer Only
- INXS
- Alice in Chains
- Sublime

vs

Bands Who Replace Their Band Members Except Lead Singer
- Guns 'N Roses
- Evanescence
- Smashing Pumpkins

So if all The Rolling Stones (including Keith Richards) retired and Mick Jagger still stayed, would it still be The Rolling Stones? I think not.

The lead singer is not always the most important ingredient. The Who, for example, would cease to be The Who without Daltrey but more so without Townshend, as it was Townshend who wrote all of the songs and helped shape the band's sound. AC / DC and Van Halen both transitioned fairly smoothly replacing their lead singers (though AC / DC had to considering the circumstances), but if Eddie Van Halen or Angus Young left, the band would completely fall apart.

The lead singer may be the figurehead from an aesthetic standpoint, but they are not always the driving force from an artistic standpoint.

Conversely, if it's only Mick Jagger who retired and the rest stays, would it still be The Rolling Stones?

No, it wouldn't.

It's partially based on longevity, I guess. If Mick Jagger or Keith Richards left the band say in 1968, it would not have been such a big deal, because they weren't established as a legendary entity entity.

Nowadays, in the eyes of the public, Jagger or Richards (or Charlie Watts, for that matter) leaving would have a far greater effect because they've established themselves under that lineup for so long.

That's just..... Not true. :(

That may be true, but if there's anyone besides Mick Jagger singing "Paint It, Black" and "(I Don't Get No) Satisfaction" in The Rolling Stones, then it's not The Rolling Stones to me. However, if it's Jagger singing those songs but without Richards and other founders of the band, I can at least accept that, albeit grudgingly. I do think the lead singer is the Most Important member of the band, sorry but it's true. Likewise, if U2 ever replaces Bono as their lead singer, then it's no longer U2 to me.
