Annihilation - from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland

It's gonna be one of those things you either get or you don't. And I hate saying stuff like that.

Definitely. I can easily see why some of the general audience won't really like it

Saw it last night, I need to watch it again. Haven't been able to gather my thoughts and make sense of them. Only thing I'm sure of is, it's a masterpiece. Loved every second of it.

Yeah, no need for that. Danny Boyle is an excellent director in his own right.

And? Saying Annihilation makes 28 Days Later and Sunshine look pedestrian can be true regardless of Boyle's skills. Even the work of excellent directors can be topped.

I expected this to not be general audience friendly. But, I loved it. This is a multi-view and catch something new type movie.

When the credits rolled, my hands started to shake. Not an exaggeration. That’s never happened to me before.

It will be a long time before a movie hits that hard for me again. This was a jolt of pure, singular cinema on a level that only comes along on a scale of years.

So apparently where i live, they are not showing this movie in cinemas.....Its movie is coming to netflix in march.

Can't wait.

Cronenberg and Hiyao Miyazaki saw this and were like, goddamn. :o

It's like The Thing, The Fly, Stalker, Solaris, and 2001: A Space Odyssey all merged DNA and this new entity arose. I almost hate having to do a comparison like that because in 10 years time, this will be a movie people reference just like those other films, a touchstone all its own. It's the most uniquely alien movie I've ever seen.

The score for this film is incredible! I love the guitar in few of the tracks, very distinctive music and I'm so happy that trailer sound is in there

And when that motif did finally show up it was so... harrowing.

In the book instead of an alligator they faced down an enraged giant boar that is straight out of Princess Mononoke.

I know Paramount was pretty much just spiking this film but the promotion ahead of the film was pretty awful. There were some TV spots during the football season but not much. Also, why is the theatrical poster that I've actually seen hanging on walls in real life basically just a lo-res jpg

Whereas the digital only Netflix poster is this. Not exactly a mind blowing design but certainly better put together overall.

The science/science fiction site Ars Technica has a bizarrely bad review of the film, as in while the review is negative, the review its self is badly written and argued. Disappointing to see because I generally like the writer, Analee Newitz.

She just kind of writes it off a a mindless creature feature that is devoid of themes, but she completely ignores the themes of self destruction illustrated by both the character's behaviors, the cancerous biology and...just openly stated and discussed by the characters.

The review also complains the film is overly vague and ambiguous while praising the book. I find this funny as many book fans have been complaining that the film removes the ambiguity of the book. The book explains nothing and really, not much actually takes place anyways. The movie is pretty explicit about what is going on and again openly discusses its themes.

Just a bizarre take to see from a writer I like.

Also... Can't wait to see it tomorrow.

Yeah considering the type of sci-fi it is i think a C cinemascore is a win. Garland is definitely 2 for 2 after this film. I'm gonna really enjoy re watching this one.

Honestly couldn't care less about Cinemascores.
