Ant-Man Ant-man's reviews thread

This is really unprofessional of the critics who are Edgar Wright fans.

I doubt this movie deserves a rating lower than Thor 2.

Impossible to state if you haven't seen the film yet, for all you know...You'd like Thor 2 more than this.

Who's considered to be the most reliable critic these days since Ebert passed?

Drew McWeeny is really good, Empire's reviews are usually spot on most of the time as well. Personally I don't always agree with Little White Lies, but for a completely unbiased and fair look at all cinema from people who genuinely know what they are talking about (rather than drooling fanboys who just want their comic book moments put on screen) I usually go to them, they aren't afraid of giving full marks to a summer blockbuster as long as it matches up to their eyes cinematically.

Also Red Letter Media's Half in the bag is hilarious but really really smart break down of current films. (also not afraid to be brutally honest)

Tons of reviews!

I am having a hard time finding bad reviews. These are all good ones. Will update later.

I'm seeing it's gotten more positive reviews than negative, so what have the people who gave it negative reviews complained about?

Some people haven't liked the humour, some didn't like the scale, others just didn't like it.

seems on rotten tomatoes, all the negative reviews have got up first

More like it doesn't seem to have lived up to the potential of its' premise. The negative reviews aren't even saying that it's awful, it's just nothing special. Probably more of a potential cult film than anything.

I mean Peyton Reed's filmography isn't exactly sterling, his most noteworthy film up until this point was Bring It On. Can't help but to think that it had the potential to be better considering who was helming it previously.

It's like if Konami released Silent Hills with another development team and the overall consensus was "Eh" (which would be pretty good considering the status of Silent Hill at the moment, hell survival horror in general lol). Critics would understandably wonder if the Kojima/Del Toro version would have been better, and chances are it would've given their respective work up until that point.

I stand by my review that it has more heart than GotG and the actions and visuals is just as good if not better than TWS. It is also by far the most relatable film Marvel has ever put out there and that is what's going to give this film great WOM

Well, I mean it's great that you think that, but that doesn't appear to reflect the general consensus. Hell, I'm sure you could find posters in this thread who would say something similar in reference to really any MCU movie.

Everyone knows I'm a Marvel fanboy but I also tend to have a finger on the pulse of the GA. This film doesn't have the same amount of Hype as movies like GotG and other MCU films before it but it does have a good amount of buzz going on in the world. Boxoffice.com posted a few weeks ago Ant-Man's total awareness level was at 77% and that was before the final push of the Marvel Marketing Machine blitz. Almost all of the social media buzz (especially the early screening stuff) is glowing. I had the same feeling about GotG and predicted big things about that movie before it dropped and was certain of it once I saw it on OW. I have the same feeling with this film and I've already caught an early screening so I know it's damn good. The heart is what is going to connect with the GA, the comedy is what is going to get people talking and the action as well. Now when I see any Marvel film I always make sure to drag my best bud to the films, he is usually a good barometer as to what the GA will think since he is not a fanboy like me and not familiar with the source material. The last Marvel movie he straight up didn't like: CA:TFA and we all know how the RT score and reviews went for that film. He loved GotG, thought AoU was decent, loved TWS, thought TWD was good and really loved the Avengers. He thought some of the comedy wasn't all that funny but said there were many times he had genuine laughs which surprised him since it takes a lot for him to LOL. He plans on taking his GF with him on OW to see it again with me because he liked it that much. I also saw the early screening with my best bud's friend and although I don't know him very well he really loved the movie too but is mildly familiar with the Marvel movies. Is this a dramatic consensus? Not by any means but in all the years of following the Marvel films I can't recall being wrong about one of their films yet

Drew's been one of my favorite reviewers since he was Moriarty at AICN (because he was one of the few on that site that could look at a movie through a critical lens and articulate his thoughts in a professional manner). He was a fan of Ant Man.

I've always liked the old AICN crew.

I always thought they were open about what they wanted and didn't want out of a movie, so I could always see value in their review regardless of whether or not I agreed with their general verdict.

The reviews are still coming in and so there is no general consensus just yet. As it turns out, most of the reviews are now turning out positive though, so I think I'm ant-icipating a positive general consensus when all is said and done.

Even the most negative reviews aren't that harsh. It's either "Wright would have been more interesting" or the usual "it feels like the same pre-packaged Marvel template".

Nothing I've read is as disastrous as a Terminator Genisys review.

I get that Edgar Wright is a talented filmmaker, but I don't like every one of his movies, and I think the naysayers are mostly Wright fans who wanted to see this movie fail so they can pull out the "I told you so" card. It's sad, but it's like when a player left the team, his fans want the new guy to crash and burn so they can feel better about themselves and their departed hero. However, I'm happy to see so many positive reviews for this movie already, a movie that some people had deemed DOA before they even saw it in theatre.

Yeah, it is sad. In a world where narccicism is condoned, insecurities are brought out in those who don't meet that standard and emotional investment gets placed in things like this. It is sad

For those that don't want to watch all 14 minutes, they call it "fresh, inventive and action packed. I was blown away with happiness" (1:24 mark)

"The action and comedy blended so well." (3:10 mark)

"Such a unique and spectacular thumbprint." (4:19 mark)

"Every supporting character only added to the story and every single character was so well done. Perfect casting." (6:24 mark)

"Everyone is multidimensional." (9:00 mark)

"It's so much fun watching this movie. It's rare that you walk in to a huge comic book film and you don't know what to expect. You can be taken by surprise. The fact that Ant-Man was able to do that and do it so well I was so happy with it. I go to the movies to have fun and this movie was a ball from start to finish." (9:28 mark)

"I don't have a complaint at all about this movie." (10:22 mark)

"I think this movie is fun, charming and entertaining." (11:52 mark)

Ok. it's official: Alan Scherstuhl of The Village Voice is an asshat. I don't care that he gave a positive review, he still spoils something I'd have wished to not know right in the first paragraph of his review(hint: it's regarding Superman if you want to read it and don't mind spoilers).

After reading it, it's really not that big of a spoiler. You knew there was going to be some minature destruction so him revealing it so early in his review shouldn't/doesn't make him what you called him.

I didn't know [Blackout]they'd be taking a friendly jab-in-the-ribs shot at MoS[/Blackout]. I would have preferred not to know that. It seems rather brilliant, honestly in a razzing sort of way that keeps humor in the competition between the 2 companies.

Seems like a comparison by the author, not a clever poke fun of other companies films jab.

When I saw the scene in question it didn't even dawn on me that it was a clever jab haha. I love layers in movies
