Anyone else annoyed at how DC treats its characters?

Yeah, McDuffie's gonna be all up in that mofo.

Anyway, it occurs to me that I didn't even respond to the topic of the thread, so here's my little rant on the subject:

Batgirl, the Flash, and the Atom are the ones that piss me off. Batgirl's turn to villainy basically wipes away the last six years of storytelling as if they didn't count, which pisses me the hell off because I fell in love with the character over those years. She was basically the postergirl for what I considered DC's greatest strength to be, too, which was to create new legacy heroes who were respectful of the previous bearers but still their own characters. Now she's just been discarded and, as if that weren't insult enough, there's someone impersonating "the real Batgirl," Barbara shot-through-the-spine Gordon, over in Birds of Prey. The Flash is just a case of really, really bad storytelling. Switching the legacy character is fine and dandy, even though it rings as a bit of a rehash thanks to Wally's identical ascendency, but they really didn't have to turn Bart into a totally unlikable, whiny ***** in a plot that's possibly the absolute worst to start a brand-new hero off with. As for the Atom, I'm with Darthphere: I don't see the need for a new, Asian character who's otherwise identical to Ray Palmer in every way. Why not just have Ray come back after his sabbatical? Isn't a year enough time to be angsty over your ex-wife's turn to villainy? While we're at it, we should add Captain Atom to the list of characters who've recently gotten royally ****ed. After dodging the bullet in Armageddon itself, they give him a badass Wildstorm mini-series to make the character near and dear to people's hearts, then rip those very same hearts out by turning him into a city-destroying, psychopathic version of the Monarch anyway.

The others I'm not so bothered by. They're doing good stuff with Jason in the wake of Ronnie's death, and I suppose I wasn't really too attached to Ronnie to begin with. Although I would've liked to see Orin reinvigorated rather than a totally new character, Busiek does seem to be weaving an interesting story with Aquanewb. While he's not Ted Kord, the new Blue Beetle is all right, although his comic is kind of crawling along too slowly. The new, totally unnecessary Ray annoys me, but I was never a huge fan of Ray Terrill. Still, better that they get a new character rather than turn Terrill into a prissy, egocentric rock star wannabe.

Im telling you people, we havent heard the last of Orin.

It depends on if the book ever wants to come out regularly.

For some reason, I have a feeling Ray might be the 11th member of Meltzer's JLA. Who better to fix him, than the guy who broke him.

The Captain Atom/Monarch thing is beyond stupid and I hate you for making me buy Battle for Bludhaven.

I hate me for making me buy Battle for Bludhaven, too. :(

I'd love to see Ray be the 11th member of the JLA, but I doubt it'll happen. He'd be kind of redundant with Simone's not-so-new Ray clone, and I don't think they'd just discard Simone's character for Meltzer to use him for the couple of arcs he's signed onto JLA for.

Maybe Ray de-aged himself and renamed himself the Molecule.

It could happen, we have two Green Arrow's right? And maybe Ray comes back as a different costumed hero, which would suck but anything is possible in the DCU now.

Technically, we don't seem to have two Green Arrows anymore. Ollie's the sole Green Arrow now and Connor is just called "Connor Hawke," if their respective comics' titles are any indication.

Secret identities are so 3 months ago.

I imagine they just did that to fight confusion.
Couldn't they have just punched confusion in the face with an issue of Ion instead?

Yeah, punching things in the face with an issue of Ion fixes everything.

Yup "I dont like Checkmate because the codenames are confusing" was one of the best things ive read, ever.

I think it was one of the best things to happen in the history of message boards, in fact.

But you're diametrically opposed. You are each other's antithesis. How can antitheses be friends?

It's people like him that make the Hype so fun.

People like him, but not him personally. Because he's your arch-nemesis.
