Anyone else done with Marvel?

Aw, even the smaller titles? Like I said, the event-driven stuff may suck, but there are a few titles that stand as semi-oases away from all of that or just on the border. And they're some really good titles, too.

Well, lets look at my pull list. I've still got GoG, Nova (though if they don't get back to space soon, I'm dropping it) and Thor. I'm also reading Iron Fist in trades and I'm thinking about picking up Herc in trade also due to good word of mouth. That's pretty much it.

I'm also picking up the Noir miniseries so far. We'll see how those go though.

Annihilation is really the only "event" in recent years I've enjoyed, and it was mostly self-contained. I'm worried about GoG though since they're going to get wrapped up in the War of Kings (or whatever it's called) soon. That may cause me to drop it depending on how everything is structured.

I've been reading a TON more Marvel in the past year and a half than I EVER have.

I'm still reading marvel, but i'm pissed at the avengers comics being used as nothing but tie-in issues. What, the avengers aren't good enough to get their own friggin storylines?!?

I have every issue of na plus every variant and every issue of ma and I'm droppin them both. Sure, I'd like to see what slott's going to do but it's only a waiting game until he's inevitably forced by his editors to just turn it into yet another string of meaningless tie-in trash.

I wouldn't say that so quickly Random_Havoc. For the most part, Slott kept his run on Avengers: the Initiative tie in free with the exception of a few issues. When you also consider the fact that Bendis still has two Avengers titles to use as tie in specials, I doubt MA will really be affected as it was before by the big events.

Avengers: The Initiative tied into practically everything. Maybe you just didn't notice because Slott and Gage were writing good tie-ins--the kind that keep A:TI's ongoing storylines just as relevant as whatever it picks up from the events.

Okay, that's cool. I thought you'd written off all of Marvel's monthlies, which would be a shame because I figured you'd probably enjoy stuff like GotG.

Oh, and put me down as another recommendation to try Incredible Herc. It warmed even Dread's cold, shriveled heart. :)

I'm looking forward to WoK, myself. It may feature Vulcan, whom I'm not too keen on, but it's still a big space war, much like Annihilation. I'm looking forward to seeing grudging alliances formed and Vulcan put in his place.

.

Yeah, i really enjoyed that whole "Doomsday Device" sub-plot Slott had going there, with the Skrull Kill Krew's insurgentcy against all the Skrull bases, and whatnot. I was exhausted at the end of it all, lol...

That was great stuff.

I was done at One more day. I come here to see whats been going on and to read Dread's Bought and Thought but other than that I havent bought a Marvel comic since.

I really hate Marvel's rolling events but they have a huge number of good ongoings.

Thor, Captain America, Iron Fist, Captain Britain, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hercules.

Plus I'm excited for Mighty Avengers with Slott.

Yup Yup ©Teddy Riley

I'd never leave Marvel simply for the fact that my favorite mag is published by them. I usually get a few storylines from a writing / art team and then I wait to hear the news of who will be the next team. It's a cycle I've come to trust and even through the lean years DEPEND on.

So the idea of leaving Marvel even through a "meh" period seems... alien.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

While I'm not a massive fan of Marvel's constant linewide crossovers, Secret Invasion was pleasantly surprising and the general direction that the stories are taken seems promising, unlike DC, which is becoming so garbled and complicated that it's hard to appreciate it. There's also a number of incredible titles that have already been mentioned - from Captain America to Hercules, from Thor to Guardians of the Galaxy, there's a lot to enjoy.

I'm pretty tentative about it for now. I like big space battles and alien races and all that. One reason I really loved the Annihilation stuff was that it dredged up a bunch of my favorite obscure cosmic characters. I can't imagine that WoK is going to do that though. We'll see.

I haven't read any marvel in a while, and all their big events storylines has put me off getting back into it. I might pick up the Captain Britain tpb in 2009 to see if I can get into it, but other than that - I'm done with Marvel's Earth-616. I'm not all that keen on the Ultimate Marvel lines either, but I might try and get back into ultimate x-men sometime.

You had better do it quickly - Ultimate X-Men is ending soon.

I thought he meant issues where the big event has it's name stamped across the top of the book, in which case, there were only a few A:TI issues like that.

Indeed it did.

I forgot to mention AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE; it hasn't been Slott's best work, but I have enjoyed it quite a bit and am interested in seeing where Christos Gage takes things, now that Slott has left the title to do his MIGHTY AVENGERS run (taking Pym & Jocasta with him).

The best strategy, really, is to seek out those Marvel books that are genuinely good. They always exist.

I've been a Marvel guy all my life. I'm a big Iron Man fan and like what Fraction has done with Invincible Iron Man, not thrilled with the way Iron Man has been treated outside his own title by Marvels writers, but thats not enough for me to stop collecting Marvel titles.

Feel the same on Iron Man.

Considering Iron Man is now a fugitive for not handing over his database of superhero identities when Osborn demanded it (and then sought to hack into it illegally), I think 2009 may be a decent year for Iron Man. He will have to rebuild some of the bridges he burned with CIVIL WAR (I mean, half the Mighty Avengers roster Slott built were hardly Stark's pals for a while, including Hercules) and is on the moral high ground unquestioningly now.

I'd say you're missing out on a lot of good stuff, but I can appreciate that you're sticking to your guns. I sort of gave up hating OMD/BND a little while ago, though. Marvel's never gonna change it, given that they've been trying to return to this tired old status quo for about a decade or more, so I just pretend Spider-Man doesn't exist anymore. Thankfully, the only comics he appears in with any regularity are his own and New Avengers, neither of which I read.

True, I can't really see a lot of obscure space characters coming up in WoK. But it does give you the chance to see some big characters from other areas of the Marvel universe interact with all the Annihilation favorites. I'm particularly looking forward to the Inhumans' reunion with their Kree ex-rulers.

Says the guy who waited a year to start reading Incredible Hercules and even longer, if I recall correctly, to start reading Captain America. ;)

It had gotten to the point that i found myself buying Marvel comics just to ****** about them.So one missed wed turned into several. I love the medium and i love the characters but i just decided that i have better things to spend my money on...things i actually get enjoyment from.

Are you at all interested in the cosmic stuff or Hercules or Captain Britain? At the risk of sounding like a broken record, their comics are all very good and mostly separate from the big events. Even when they do tie into the big events, they're still good.

Not done with Marvel, since there's:

- Captain America
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- The Immortal Iron Fist
- The Incredible Hercules
- Nova
- Thor

Other titles I still personally keep to are Runaways and Wolverine's Old Man Logan.

Done with Spider-Man, however, ever since the black mark that is OMD.

Pity Spider-Girl is getting the axe again, but she had a good, long run.

I've only just started reading Immortal Iron-Fist. Great comic. And I'm looking forward to the Dark Reign arc. Especially Deadpool storming Avenger Towers.

It's sad to see guys like roach chuck the whole thing, but you definately shouldn't buy if you're not enjoying them. I was doing that for a while, and quit for about a year about 10 years ago. When I came back, I started small, was much more selective, and now I enjoy (almost) everything I buy. There are times that I stick with a title too long (Claremont's Exiles), but on the whole I'm happy. I don't take it too seriously (or personally) when they make changes, so I guess that's why a lot of this stuff doesn't really bother me.

As for myself, I sub to about 12 titles, and pick up maybe twice that at the LCBS. Mostly Marvel (Booster Gold sticks out in my mind). I also sub to Marvel's Digicomics and actually bought another for my friend. So no, I'm definately gonna be around for a while.

Along with the Image and Vertigo stuff, and the occasional indie recommend I pick up in trades, I'm a very happy person.(And broke, did I mention broke?)
