How do you think the 616 versions of our favorite characters measured up against their AoA versions? Not in a fight, but as far as character design goes.

616 Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Angel, Wolverine, Rogue, Beast, Bishop, Emma, Cannonball > AOA

AOA Blink, Shadowcat, Dazzler, Exodus, Colossus, Apocalypse, Havok, Magneto, Sunfire, Sabretooth, Quicksilver, Iceman, Mystique, Nightcrawler > 616

AoA (I'm ignoring the existence of the revisit since it was utter crap)

Mags: I know they tried to make him the "Xavier" of this reality, but because of Lobdell's clumsy writing, he came off as a sleezebag to me and someone who was more in love with Xavier than with his dream. Magneto didn't even bother trying for co-existence, he was just about fighting a war against Apocalypse. His thing with Rogue was a lot like Xavier/Jean is; just as wrong, but made worse because he betrayed the confidence of a close friend for it.

Cyke: He looked ridiculous, but the Factor-X books were pretty good and you could see him go from someone who followed Apocalypse's creed to someone who fought it.

Havok: A whiney brat who was *very* annoying. I was happy when
Logan shanked him at the end.

Wolverine: Didn't like the design, but I thought his inner demons were conveyed really well; the scene where Jean got lost in the crowd and he panicked really made me feel for the guy and how lonely he must be.

Jean: Meh; I didn't really care one way or the other.

Gateway: Awesome. Better than 616 gateway IMO.

Gambit: I liked the first look he had; with the leather jacket, but really hated the one with the weird cape thing. His razor blades looked pretty lethal. Was too fixated on rogue and love though; his story should be about redemption and walking the line between good and evil, not romance.

I'll do more later.

AoA Bishop WAS 616 Bishop.

AoA Nightcrawler kicked ass. and X-man is MUCH better than Cable. I also likd AoA Sinister better than 616. Dark beast was cool...for the AoA, NOT the 616. and i liked Wildchild on a leash

Reread the original post. The question said which character design was better. 616 and AOA Bishop did NOT have the same character design

oh. regardless the ONLY Bishop design i have EVER liked was when joe Madreira drew his with a close cropped fade/buzz cut.

Ive liked all of Bishop's designs except for his original one. The Mad one was good but I also really enjoyed the X-treme look as well as his most recent one from UXM

Wasn't just about every AoA character cooler than his/her 616 counterpart? I mean, seriously, for the most part. I'm only talking about the X-characters, not so much the FF/Avengers ones. Rather than put just about everything I type here in spoilers, here's my disclaimer. There are AoA spoilers in an AoA thread. ZOMG.

First and foremost, it might just be my general outlook on stuff, but a general truth of fiction: the bleak and dreary makes for cooler stuff than the happy-peachy-melodrama stuff. If it's not dark, it's boring - hey, I'd say that sums up the AoA vs. 616 in and of itself. :woot:

I freakin' love AoA Magneto. I don't think he was sleazy in the least, and I'd argue about him not caring about co-existence. There's an issue... is it the first Astonishing issue, or was it one of the Chronicles? - where he's fighting to save a human. And he obviously preached Xavier's dream and message to his troops, since Rogue's team was all about stopping Holocaust. He was clearly carrying demons regarding Xavier's death and sacrifice, though, and that's not a detriment to the character.

AoA Cyclops is proof enough that, apparently with writers of that time, the character can be golden sans Jean. Even if they tried to throw the two of them together. Even if they tried to stick the two of them together sorta-kinda. His backdrop with Logan was even cooler.

I thought the Logan/Wolvie/Weapon X redesign was neat. His four issues were also pretty neat, and were more than just "ladeeda, I'm the best there is at what I do, and what I do is stabbitystab." Current Wolverine would actually be cooler if he SAID "stabbitystab," I say.

AoA Nightcrawler, I love you.

AoA Sunfire, I love you.

AoA Havok was a whiny little brat, sure, but this being 1995 wasn't Havok still going through his baby brother syndrome? Wah wah wah, everyone loves my bigger brother more than me and he gets all the high-profile and cool gigs while I'm stuck leading these nutjobs in X-Factor. But we were supposed to dislike Havok, and it worked.

AoA Sinister: As menacing as 616 Sinister, I recall, as evil, as maniacal, as calculating... but with a slight heart of gold, which wasn't so much a heart of gold as it was "Holy Crappola, I work for Apocalypse and he's absolutely-scootin' nuts! I should kill him." Mmm, evil manipulation.

AoA Iceman: SO COOL. And it's all because things were so dark and hopeless!

AoA Blink: I'd never seen the 616 Blink before, so I thought she was a new character and what not. She was rad, and when the top came off the jar, showed she could hold her own. If only she were still written like that in Exiles.

AoA Sabretooth: I thought Sabes rocked so hard in the AoA. It was the whole reversal thing, I guess. He wasn't really any less homicidal in AoA, just a little less sociopathic/psychopathic and/or both, but he worked so well as a hero. I suppose the "heart of gold" thing goes there. The whole chain/Wildchild-leash was much appreciated, too.

AoA Apocalypse: It says a lot when Sabretooth can't stomach doing anymore of Apocalypse's work. AoA Apocalypse looked cool, brought his dogma forth to a huge level, and conquered - everything Apocalypse should be and do.

AoA Quicksilver: 616 Quicksilver has always pretty much rubbed me the wrong way, so seeing him as a leader who wasn't a schmuck was great.

AoA Storm: 616 Storm has always pretty much rubbed me the wrong way, so seeing her take a backseat and shut up about the Goddess and her stupid elemental mumbo-jumbo was great. I'm going to get such a crapstorm for this one. :o

AoA Banshee: So cool. And his costume kicked the green-and-yellow's butt.

AoA Colossus: His design was awesomely cool. Looked mega-menacing and brutal, and he wasn't a silly pacifist. Too bad he was a little bit of a nutjob when it came to his family.

Yeah... okay. I need to stop now.

You made me want to go read AoA after seeing you describe some of the X-characters.

Canemacer, is there any version of Romy you don't find it so bad? :woot:

Canemacer, is there any version of Romy you don't find it so bad? :woot:

Yes: a version in which Rogue isn't a psycho-b****, Gambit gets written with cojones, and the romance is a *part* of the characters instead of the entirety. In other words; there's no such thing as a Romy i like.

I'm touched. I'd use a face here, but there isn't one with a slight tear dripping from one of its eyes. So, instead: <3

well they were bad in AOA. She really didnt care much for him and was in love with Magneto. Rogue and Magneto were like the Scott and Jean of AOA with Gambit playing the Wolverine role and looking like the fool on the outside.

That sums up my view of AoA Romy.

I swear, that romance is like an anchor to Gambit.

I personally loved Husk. I loved the look, but also the creative usages of her powers, such as shapeshifting and turning into boiling acid. She was awsome! Of coarse, X-Man was amazing and bounds and leaps over Cable. I don't know why, but I always thought Rictor was cool too, much cooler than 616.

She was good, but I didnt care for the hair change. I wish they kept her blonde. I loved the character design on Chamber though

Oh man, I forgot about Chamber... he was cool too. I liked Mondo too. I pretty much liked everything having to do with Generation Next, except Kitty. Didn't care for her much. And I was okay on the Red hair, but I think I would have prefered the blonde too.

I'd have to say I like the Chamber of the 616 over the Chamber of the AoA. Well, the original Chamber with the blasted jaw and chest cavity, rather than the current quasi-Apocalypse model.

I hated that M was a damn computer attached to a wall! Oh and Mondo was good. Better than his idiotic 616 version was. I also really liked Vicente

AoA Storm: 616 Storm has always pretty much rubbed me the wrong way, so seeing her take a backseat and shut up about the Goddess and her stupid elemental mumbo-jumbo was great. I'm going to get such a crapstorm for this one. :o

Not so much a crapstorm as being called on what you're taking about. The ''I am the elemental goddess blah blah blah'' Storm didn't surface too bad until Claremont got his hand on her again. Storm circa 1995 was actually...you know..likable. that and her costume rocked hard!

Yeah, i dont like Kitty in any universe she is in. not sad she is rumored to be killed off soon. Mondo KICKED A$$. Oh man he was sooo much better that 616 Mondo and vincente was cool too..did he have a 616 counterpart?
