Gibson Faces Apocalypto Now
point.gif

Mel directs another historical epic
22 July 2005

Last year, he made one of the world's biggest ever indie films. Now, Mel Gibson is returning to ancient history to write and direct Apocalypto, which readers may be relieved / disappointed to know is "not religious in theme" and which is, we're promised, more of an action movie.

The story is set in "an ancient civilisation" some 3,000-odd years ago. While the title might suggest that this is the mother of all disaster movies, it is in fact a Greek word meaning "an unveiling" or a "new beginning", rather than, say, the end of all creation (cause, you know, we're still here). Like The Passion of the Christ and Braveheart, we can expect lots of violence and action despite – or because of – the period setting.

What's not clear is whether this is the same ancient action movie that Gibson was planning last year. That was based on the Jewish story of the Maccabees, a group that rose up in rebellion against a corrupt King, and reconsecrated the defiled Temple in Jerusalem. However, the fact that their story, while not Biblical, is the basis for the Jewish feast of Hanukah, and that this film is not religious in theme, means that he may have written a different story in the intervening months.

Gibson isn't going to star in the film, and may not use a star at all in the cast. Either way, he shouldn't have any problems – after The Passion of the Christ made $600 million worldwide on a budget of $25 million, Mel has a few dollars to spare here and there. He's currently scouting for locations and has already begun casting the film. His company, Icon, will be distributing the film worldwide, while Disney won a bidding war to distribute the film in the US.

sounds cool, I like him as a director! Im hoping for some action and sword fights!

In Southern California, an ATF agent infiltrates the notorious Mongols motorcycle gang. . It's a true story.

oh... that sounds good

This is a review of the book which the movie is based on:
This harrowing, turbocharged account of undercover life is reminiscent of Joseph D. Pistone's Donnie Brasco. After military service in Vietnam, Queen began his law enforcement career, eventually spending 20 years as an ATF special agent. In 1998, through contact with a "confidential informant," he began to hang with the Mongol Nation, a violent Southern California motorcycle club ("a tight-knit collective of crazies, unpredictable and unrepentant badasses") with 20 chapters in several states and 350 members both in and out of prison. Assuming the role of bearded biker "Billy St. John," Queen entered into a 28-month undercover operation. To gather evidence of homicide, weapons and narcotics violations, he sometimes wore a wire, knowing that its discovery could lead to his murder. Indeed, he was suspected at first of being a cop and forced to prove himself in more than a few dangerous situations. But after months of hazing, he became a trusted member. Queen steers clear of melodrama and captures both sides of his double life; the sadistic characters and criminal camaraderie are contrasted with his own inner turmoil, as he thought of the Mongols as his friends while the investigation escalated. The strength and white-hot intensity of the writing make this read like a movie, and Hollywood is certain to take note. 16 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

Mel Gibson plans to make his film in Mayan
25 July 2005
11282.jpg
After making an incredibly controversial film into one of the most successful indie hits of all time, and doing it all in a language that no one even speaks, we can't help worrying that all that Aramaic has gone to Mel Gibson's head. A few details have emerged about his next film, Apocalypto (which we reported on here) and darned if he isn’t resurrecting yet another defunct language.

It seems that Apocalypto will in fact be set among the ancient Mayans, the culture that existed in southern Mexico and parts of Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, existing alongside the similar Olmec civilisation (don't say you never learn anything here!). About 1000 BC, when the story is apparently set, they began to build the huge ceremonial buildings that remain to this day as monuments to their culture.

The descendants of the Mayans still live in that part of the world, and still speak a variety of dialects that date back to their glory days. And it is one of these that Gibbo will be using for the film, to give that added air of authenticity. He also plans to use a cast of unknowns from the region.

South and Central American history is becoming something of a growth industry for Hollywood, with planned films like The Serpent and the Eagle (read more here), and the simply titled Aztec (more here).

Now people said that Gibson was crazy when he decided to film The Passion of the Christ in Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic – and that ended up working rather well. By the same logic, this could find its audience – but somehow we doubt that that audience will be anywhere near the same size.

After all, the success of Passion lay largely on two elements: the support of the immense religious movement in the States, and the controversy that drew everyone else to go have a look out of curiosity's sake. In the absence of those factors, you're going to be left with a struggle to persuade anyone but lecturers in Mezoamerican studies to attend. Right? Well, everyone pooh-poohed his decision to use Aramaic, so let's hope that this works out as well. Frankly, we'd be surprised if an R-rated action film in Mayan breaks box office records – but let's hope that Mel "Crazy Risk Taker" Gibson knows something we don't.

I love Mel Gibson, he's the man
He's never afraid to do something different, and has much more balls than almost any director out there, plus a hell of an actor.

He's acting in two films due out next year. One of them is the one with Fuqua where he goes undercover in a biker gang, and in another one he plays a prison inmate(can't recall the titles, they're on IMDB).

I love him as an actor and love him even more as a director, plus ancient epic is easily one of my favorite genres. Apocalypto is one of my biggest event movies of 2006.

Lethal Weapon IMO is Mel best work, I think Under and Alone (the Fuqua movie) could be just as good. Hopefully things move forward!
