Apocalypto

sorry man --thought that was the teaser posted up earlier.

i wasn't overly excited until i saw the theatrical one, now it looks like a pretty badass flick.

This has been on my list for a long time. Although I haven't seen Braveheart, I've seen and enjoyed Passion. I think Mel is a great actor but also a great director, he takes risks. It paid off with Passion and who knows maybe it won't with Apcoalypto but the guy isn't in it for the money and I love that about filmmakers. The originality of using the ancient dialect is interesting and I'm sure it will have an audience despite this. Not everyone is bothered by subtitles and there is an audience out there for any genre of film. Not every is into sex, explosions and violence.

Storm, you simply have to see Braveheart, it's freaking amazing. I couldnt agree with you more about apocalytpo or your appreciation for Mel Gibson in the sense that he takes risks. He's been attacked in the media for things in his personal life, and frankly, I could care less about his personal views. No one in this industry is an angel, but Gibson has come clean and gone back to applying his genius filmmaking ability to putting out what looks to be a great film (damn the cinematography looks good).

so anyway, this movie was f**king awesome, Mel is such a great director

yeah... the guy goes from strength to strength in the directing department. His Bravherat is one of my Fav films of all time.

Good action adventure suspense... if you like gore Gibson is the way to go... but it obviously isn't a Braveheart

Saw this in theaters. Great film, Mr. Gibson knows how to direct them.

Awful depiction of one of the most important civilizations in history

Loved this movie. The cinematography alone makes it worth the viewing in my opinion. Yeah it's not completely accurate., but man this was an exciting movie.

But that doesn't necessarily make it a ****ty movie. Just take a look at 300.

Anyway, Apocalypto was ok, IMO. I don't know if its really worth getting on DVD.

I loved it. Loved everything about it. Mel has an eye for visuals and atmosphere, but that wasn't the only strongpoint of the movie. I found the film moving, scary, exciting, disturbing...very entertaining and intelligently made film.

As far as the "depiction", I don't see how it could be "awful". I don't proport to know much about the people and the times, but they had experts working on the script with Mel, and besides, it was merely representative of a moment in the civilization's time, not their history.

The Aztecs were the ones that had some real brutal sacrificial rituals, and it´s bad for people that don´t know a thing about the Mayans cause they actually might picture them as a violent civilization as portrayed in Apocalypto

I live in Mexico so this film was not received very well here cause of the portrayal of the Mayans being so violent

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_sacrifice_in_Aztec_culture#Sacrifices_to_specific_gods

Most of the sacrificial rituals took more than two persons to perform. In the usual procedure of sacrifice, the victim would be taken to the top of the temple. Then the victim would be laid on a stone slab by four priests, and his/her abdomen sliced open by a fifth priest with a ceremonial knife made of flint. The cut was made in the abdomen and went through the diaphragm. The priest would grab the heart and tear it out, still beating. It would be placed in a bowl held by a statue of the honored god, and the body thrown on the temple's stairs.

Now isn´t it surprising that in the movie that Mayans do this hmmm...

So you see the movie portrays an awful depiction of the Mayans, but the Mayans did have sacrifices but it´s just sad that they were portrayed as a violent civilization in the movie

2 things...

1...this movie needed a different name. "Apocalypto" doesn't fit because nothing apocalyptic happens. Mel Gibson said this movie was supposed to be about the Mayan's downfall but we barely got to see the Mayan people and we DEFINITELY didn't get to see their downfall.

2...the Mayan's didn't do ritual sacrificing the way they were depicted in the film. most of the sacrifices were volunteers, not captured towns-people and even then they didn't kill a person every 5 minutes.

other than that i loved the movie just because it transported me back to a world that none of us will ever know. the story was good and if it had been called something different than "Apocalypto" i probably would've liked it even more.
