I thought it was an extremely exuberant B movie.
it's obvious that Mel Gibson took artistic license when he showed the Mayan's commiting ritual sacrifice. as Bauer pointed out...the way they sacrificed people in the movie was more like the Aztecs than the Mayans. most of the Mayan sacrifices were voluntary. it was even looked upon as an honor in many cases.
Mel Gibson's portrayal of the Mayans in his film work in context of the movie, but is historically inaccurate.
Personally I highly doubt this movie will have any influence on what anybody thinks of anybody. It's a movie that takes place hundreds of years ago. People were entertained. It's not like people walked out of the theatre with new found prejudice.
there are already people who think the Mayans really held sacrificial ceremonies like that. it's not a big issue right now...you're right, it took place eons ago but it still sux that people are getting the impression that Mayans sacrificed against people's will most of the time.
