Apple announces RCS support coming to the iPhone in 2024

so the iOS 18 beta is out there, for everyone who wants to try this out preliminarily!

I used Google Voice for many years. do you use it too?
anyway, the Department of Justice is breathing down Apple's neck again

Yeah I used it as a work number and used my personal number with it for a while. I went back to regular cell service due to missing Google Messages and its features.

Dear god. The only thing you worried about when I was in HS if you didn't have an MP3 Player or cell phone at all.

we haven't seen the widespread adoption yet. it's still just on the beta. but honestly, I really don't think it will change anything for the masses. not unless Apple changes the colors of the bubbles too. without that, the masses are just gonna think that iPhones just added "delivered" and typing indicators to an otherwise unchanged green bubble. and while that's true technically, the additions of such features mean so much more than that.

this is why even for a practical reason, the colors of the bubbles should have changed because it's important for users to differentiate between SMS and RCS chats.

Google really wants iPhones users aware of what they're about to get

Meta couldn't have done this 10 years ago?

I 100% believe they are running this ad campaign now because of RCS coming to iOS. Meta knows that on some level it's gonna move the consciousness of the Apple userbase, so that's why they're spending a lot of money on expensive commercials specifically targeted in the US, because this is where they don't have the same stronghold as the rest of the world

It's part of the reason I never got the point of Facebook Messenger other than increase the member count for Facebook. Meta could have easily announced WhatsApp instead and bake in connections to Marketplace and SMS and launch it as WhatsApp from Facebook or something.

It would make sense to merge the two, but since Whatsapp already had brand recognition before Meta bought them think they thought it's just about having two of the most popular messaging platforms both under their wing. Having one fully replace the other might have ended up hurting the overall userbase count.

Oh I see that Messenger was a thing in 2011 and they bought WhatsApp in 2014. So pretty much bought WhatsApp to improve Messenger with no actual intentions to introduce it in the states. But now with the EU threatening to label them as a monopoly must be trying to promote WhatsApp as an option in the states.

Looks like WhatsApp is having some kind of sever issue as people can't access their accounts.

Whatsapp is 100% a monopoly not just in the EU but practically everywhere outside of NA, and I honestly thought they were promoting it as an option here only because of RCS incoming to iOS.

eventually, people will start to take notice and it's going to make a difference. I don't think it'll happen right away; it probably will take a very long time since not everyone updates their phones right away and of course because the biggest optic has gone unchanged: the green bubble.

It used to or still does. Theirs worked differently. You got encrypted messaging, but couldn't send reactions.
Ohhhhhh I think I remember that actually. In the last couple of years I was texting people on Samsungs and the color of the bubble was a deep custom red which indicates to me that it was RCS, but it wasn't e2ee so I knew they didn't have Google messages.

But I was able to successfully convert several of them to it, though!

Well now the Samsung app notifies people when they open it to move over to Google Messages. I wish their One UI skin was like the old one, though.

I currently use Beeper at the moment.

Whoa really? Then maybe Google and Samsung had an agreement & the latter is just gonna eventually retire their messaging app entirely. Which app is this one in your screenshot?

That's Google Messages with the original One UI skin on the S21 series. They changed it to the current one, but it used to have pitch black on top and a dark grey frame around the messages. I prefer that version tbh, but it went away when they added reactions.
