Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

Which is one of its many faults.

Nothing annoys me more than a 3 star + review being put down as "rotten".

It's generally up to the reviewer to decide whether the review is fresh or rotten, meaning that he/she says if they recommend the film or not. If it's a relatively high grade but a rotten review then the reviewer clearly has a harsh scale definition.

75% is ok but the 6.3/10 average says a lot more IMO.

So I guess we are looking at between 70%-80%. Cool

Good for Aquaman! I am STOKED OUT OF MY MIND TO SEE THIS. I'm failing to see the RT panic. From clickbait headlines and toxic fanboys in commemt sections, I thought it would be in the 30's. 75% right now and one that will probably settle there is a critical victory.

The RT score is so far on par with Ready Player One and Jumanji to give a random example.

I don't think anyone last year would have thought Aquaman would have better reviews than Fantastic Beasts.

Good to see you around these parts :)

Hey it is possible Sneider is right and the next wave goes awful but I am not going to sit around waiting for it looking for signs. I will assume the best and if the worst happens well not much I can do about it anyways. I am just going to enjoy the ride through me seeing the film. Then when it is over I will move on to discussing Shazam and WW84 with some BOP thrown in.

Having read info form various sources what I've gathered says that anyone can submit their view if they want, and we've also seen ratings change on request of the reviewer (although it's rare, as it's likely accurate on the far majority of times as it's their job). Hence why I think it's generally up to the reviewer as they have choice.

I think the only point it was that high was when like 6 reviews were in. The first mass upload had it around 81% or so and it has been solidly in the 70s since then. Got down to 71% and got up to 79%. Havent been any new reviews so it has been at 75% for a while :)

edit: Just ticked up to 76%.

Well, it’s about 50% higher than what I predicted, so, I am happy =P

Tho I secret was hoping for a 80%+, 7/10+ score, but it’s not that far off, the good thing now is that this score will not drive away fence sitters nor people planning to see it, probably won’t bump the box office up based on the reviews alone (WOM will determine it now)

And Bumblebee is killing it, very happy too cuz I plan to see that one too, and the writer wrote BOP and has started working on Batgirl!

Edit: at one stage it looked like it’s gonna make Despicable Me 3 (at one stage), below 6/10 but fresh in the 60-70s, and makes near 1B

It doesn't matter with countless movies, even praised for it.
They also said that visually Aquaman is good, then what's the problem?

You're scary. :wow:
But I do think that some BTS stories and drama will emerge years later, The Abyss 'The Abuse' style.

Man some people just dont like him...

Ed Harris is my fav actor and one of the greatest things he did was punching Cameron in the face after Harris was drowning and Cameron kept shooting. He is a menace

Was just scrolling through the reviews at RT and noticed Mark Hughes had done one at Forbes. That’s a little unusual. Normally he leaves the reviews to Mendelson and focuses on the box office numbers. So I took a look and let’s just say he’s feeling bullish!

Review: 'Aquaman' Is Thrilling New Addition To Superhero Cinema

That would be KILLER!!! I hope he's right! It's already proven to be the case in China as audiences seem to LOVE IT! :)

So your trolling isnt working...my suggestion is to wait until the score tanks before you try again. Your last post "going down down down" didnt look so great since it not only wasnt going down it was actually going up ;)
Trolls are everywhere.

Yeah, the comments have been downright confusing on this one. I thought my RT hadn't updated correctly.

Reading reviews is so much fun. :funny:
Yeah, nitpicking or weird complaints aside, they are range between 'why?' to 'why not?'. Some even still couldn't processed what they saw.
I actually even more excited now.
Sooo many good lines, these lines are from just two of them.

'There are more hair flips here than in a shampoo commercial.'
- Most of it done by Momoa.

'Most of the film’s central romance (with Amber Heard’s Mera) is played in a montage that could double as tourism board videos for a vacation hotspot.'

'Aquaman has plenty of tricks up his sleeves too — or he would if he ever wore a shirt with sleeves. He launches himself into a submarine like a human missile. He jumps out of an airplane without a parachute. He spins a trident like the world’s brawniest competitive baton twirler. Basically, this movie is two and a half hours of Jason Momoa doing ridiculous s— punctuated by Jason Momoa saying ridiculous s—. If you can’t get a chuckle out of watching this guy ride a seahorse like a drunken surfer, why do you even go to the movies in the first place?'

'This version of the character, which personality-wise is quite different from the DC Comics one upon which the film is otherwise based, is basically what would happen if the nice guy at your gym who always wants to share his equipment decided to move under the sea and fight crime. Momoa’s chummy nonchalance in the face of increasingly outlandish situations is the key to the whole picture. Even as Aquaman expands to monstrous scope, even when there are dudes in bright purple armor shooting laser beams from tridents while riding giant hammerhead sharks, you’ve always got Momoa in the middle of everything with a twinkle in his eye that practically screams “Can you believe they’re letting me do this?”

For the record, I can’t. I couldn’t even believe I was watching it. We’ve come a long way from the days when studio executives were hesitant to put the X-Men in bright costumes because they were worried audiences would think they looked stupid. Aquaman is bursting with more colors than an acid trip.'

'Wilson delivering a performance that’s Rita Repulsa-adjacent in the best way possible: half deadly serious monologue and half full-throat vowel shouting.'
- Now this is hyped me up. Love me some Jupiter Ascending's EDDIE Redmayne and Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman.
