Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

Just ask yourself if Aquaman was MCU would it be nominated. There is only one answer to that question especially when you consider they chose Christopher Robin over Paddington 2
This is just the shortlist not the actual nominations. Only 5 of those 10 movies will indeed be nominated. Personally i have little clue of who deserves to be on that list. The ones i saw, i think IW is easily one of those that will end up with a nomination. From what i've heard First Man will also take a spot...

Seriously thought, BP has really messy CGI at best, that last action sequence was atrocious. Aquaman, while not perfect, really has some beautifully done CGI.

Aquaman hasn't even been released in the U.S. and many other big countries yet. It's too late for an Oscar campaign to get taken seriously. If they wanted to push for an Oscar nomination (waste of time for a CBM IMO), they needed to release a bit earlier.

IDK, Suicide Squad two years ago proved that technical awards aren't out of CBM grasp when it comes to the Oscars. If they aren't eligible, that's fine, but if they were, it's a real snub.

MPR has same release date and is on multiple Oscar shortlists
Well in that case, I’m completely wrong. :funny:

How late can films usually get away with releasing if they want the best chance to win?

to qualify for Oscar the film needs to be released until the end of the year, even in the limited run.

It's all up to the campaign the studio runs....and the taste of the voters. Aquaman is not a small movie, it's all over the news so we cannot blame WB for not pushing hard. These are actual people with eyes in AMPAS who said "I think BP VFX looks better than the one in Aquaman" lol

Thanks. They must have fell asleep during the BP vs Killmonger railtrack scene.

I would have liked it to finish on at least 70%.

I know I shouldnt care about this stupid score. I loved the movie and I know audiences will too, but I cant help but take issue with the panning of this movie and I think this score is gonna sink further before friday and get dangerously close to rotten. I can fully understand the panning of MoS, BvS, SS and JL but this one Im scratching my head on. James Wan did such a great job crafting this movie fot it to be considered "bad" by these critics.

Well this isn’t getting panned. It’s just normalising to a lower level of good. And with critics there is material there for them to pick at (that most who’ve seen it have acknowledged) if they want to prioritise those things over the epic adventure unfolding before them. We are still in a position where a big majority of critics (69% to 31%) are recommending people see the movie regardless of whatever issues they might bring up.

Imho it's all good. Other CBMs getting inflated praise while Aquaman gets snubbed by awards and gets trashed by critics for being *gasps so hard she almost breaks a rib* campy and *looks around in pure and utter horror* goofy

People tend to turn on things that are praised in time

money matters. And money it is making :D Critics cannot influence if a person likes something only if a person goes to see it. And once they went and saw it, it's their opinion. And neither snubs nor reviews seem to be stopping anyone here

Has everyone seen the movie already?

I wouldn't consider a DCeU film with 69% RT score bad when the average DCeU RT score is 49%. This is still a win for the DCeU, especially with the box office numbers looking good.

As long as most users see a fresh tomatoe when they log on I would be willing to bet there more incline to go see it

So far they have 117 reviews, this movie will get about 300 reviews, so there's still 183 reviews left to be added !

No, I know, but i also feel like at this trend it'll probably end up below 65% when all's said and done which I'll happily take but its clear something about this movie is rubbing them the wrong way which I can't figure out since this movie is a such a clear about face from prior DC movies.

IMHO it’s simply that Aquaman has been a pop culture punchline for so long that the film has a huge uphill climb just to get many critics not to dismiss it out of hand. I mean, look at the AZcentral.com review (I won’t dignify it with a link) whose first freaking line is “There’s no way an Aquaman movie could have been good good, but it could have been fun.” Alas, the critic did not find it fun, but look at the attitude going in: no chance it could be good to begin with!

Frankly I think it’s a testament to the film that it’s won over as many critics as it has.

If I can guess.. for some Top Critics it's "We don't like silly (and CGI filled) comic book moviez", which are coming out regularly nowadays, since the other franchise (MCU) is hitting each entry out of the park and gained respectibility, they feel this is the movie to display this message.

69%
Average Rating: 6/10
Reviews Counted: 133
Fresh: 92
Rotten: 41

The average rating has decreased. I do think the movie will average out at a healthy 70%.

critics really think this is worse than man of steel/thor 2/incredible hulk?

and with the vfx snub

damn....
