Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

It is hilarious when fan bases complain when critics don't like their stuff, and then preach to the converted about why they are right and critics are wrong.

Seriously guys, get some perspective.
 
I'm also wondering if some people/critics just arent sold on Mamoa either and find his iteration of Aquaman abrasive rather than charming. Theres something Mamoa does in the climax of the film, something in arguably the movie's coolest most crowd pleasing moment, that I could see a lot of people either loving and pumping their fists to or rolling their eyes and thinking "seriously, they cast THIS guy as Aquaman?"

Obviously. I was part of the former. :D
 
Doesn't matter at this point. Just the perception of a having any Fresh rating will do wonders for general audiences. Especially if it gets a strong Cinemascore similar to Man of Steel (A-) and Wonder Woman (A). Numbers don't lie. This will be a crowd pleaser.

You're looking at the average rating. Hawkflame is talking about the Tomato score.

And films arent graded on a curve. Usually. Just because critics are responding worse to this in 2018 doesn't mean they necessarily think it's worse than a film they responded more positively to in 2013.
 
From what I’ve seen in the trailers the VFX look decent. Not sure why everyone is complaining about it getting snubbed. Maybe I’ll be blown away when I see it this weekend? Were the trailers holding back visually?
 
Chris Stuckmann just put up his review (I can't post it because of swear words, but I recommend watching it) but it was a good insight as to what is making the movie divisive. Stuckmann himself really enjoyed it and gave it a B and he said that the pure 80's, over the top, cartoonish-ness of it is going to be a turn off to a lot of people who want a more serious Aquaman movie but if you have a soft spot or affinity for that, its going to hit your sweet spot, like it did him. And I think that sums it up pretty well and probably why I loved it so much. Everything from the over the top action, the music, the dialogue, the one-liners, the macho-testosterone infused lead is all a love letter to that era of blockbuster movies led by Arnold, Stallone and the like, which quite honestly, I imagine critics weren't too of either at the time.

Haven’t listened to too many reviews but Kristian Harloff did say some of the VFX was “awful”.

Doesn’t matter as long as movie is good. Justice League wasn’t good, which made it extremely noticeable it had some of the worst if not the worst VFX I’ve ever seen in a 150 million + blockbuster.
 
I believe the academy looks at a pre- arranged ten minute highlight reel of the best effects. It’s not like they take an entire movie and strike one off the list due to a shoddy scene or two.

Kinda telling how much this award actually matters and how ridiculous it is to feel too much emotion if you feel a movie got snubbed or doesn’t deserve the accolades.

Yeah, that’s one of the better reviews I’ve seen of the movie, and not just because I agree with his opinion on the film. The best reviews don’t just give an analysis of the film, but also the kind of experience it gives the viewer as well. Then the viewer could make up their own mind as to whether or not they would enjoy that kind of experience.

Aquaman really embraces its “Comic bookiness” and it seems that how much you like the movie really depends on your affinity for that kind of thing. Personally, I like that stuff too.

Yes. Although I haven't seen Aquaman, what I've seen in the trailers doesn't scream snub to me in the slightest.

It'd also be unprecendented to have such a steep fall from grace. And it would also validate the claims that DC somehow handpicked the initial wave of critics they knew would review the movie favorably. What was Man of Steel's tomatometer journey like? I know it was fresh for a while too before stumbling into rotten territory.

Man of Steel's embargo dropped late in eastern time. I remember going to bed and there were about 13 reviews and it was at a 91 percent or something very close to that. My thoughts were, "Oh jeez, Snyder and Nolan did it". An then when I woke up it was around 50 percent and stayed in the fifties it's entire run.
 
I mean if the amount of fresh and rotten for Aquaman doubles by the end of it all, it would still be around 66-68% so that isn’t too bad.

Man of Steel wasn’t fresh at nearly 150 reviews like Aquaman was if I recall correctly.

It could go anywhere at this point. I still think it can possibly go back to the 70s but at this point, I know it will be fresh.
