Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

Some perspective, Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk are the only non Certified Fresh films in the MCU at 66% and 67% respectively. Still fresh though. And a fresh rating is a win.

Plus, I can't see Aquaman dipping to the extreme levels as these 3 films did.

JL: 210 Rotten out of 351 Total
SS: 253 Rotten out of 348 Total
BvS: 286 Rotten out of 394 Total

Aquaman will be Certified Fresh once and as long as the Top Critics score is above 60%.

the ironic thing is that Rotten Tomatoes is 100 percent owned by fandango and Fandango is owned by Warners 30 percent and 70 percent by comcast.

74/32, 70%. Technically now below 70 at 69.8%.

Been dropping steadily since around 80 reviews. RT must have seen this coming, hence no certified fresh.

They didn't see jack. lol It's not Certified Fresh yet because the Top Critics score is 50% with 7 Fresh, 7 Rotten. That score has to be above 60%.

This is the criteria for CF:

Certified Fresh status is a special distinction awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. In order to qualify, movies or TV shows must meet the following requirements:

  • A steady Tomatometer score of 75% or higher.
  • At least five reviews from Top Critics.
  • Films in wide release must have a minimum of 80 reviews.
  • Films in limited release must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
  • Only individual seasons of a TV show are eligible, and each must have a minimum of 20 reviews.
A movie or TV show that reaches the requirements for Certified Fresh doesn't immediately receive the designation. Instead, it is automatically flagged for our staff's consideration. Once the team can determine that it's unlikely the score will drop below the minimum requirements, they will mark it Certified Fresh.

If the Tomatometer score drops below 70%, then the movie or TV show will lose its Certified Fresh status.

Still higher than my initial sad guess. :funny:
No need to worry I think? UK critics seem hard to this movie, some for cheese or outrageous elements (or kitsch, as they said). I saw 1 rotten review that actually doesn't seem negative but more to mentions bizzare things in the movie. :funny:
All this time, they are inlined, but sometimes UK and US critics can have opposite spectrum when approaching things.

Maybe US critics would love it more. Because many positive or negative reviews still say that Aquaman is one of the 'most comic book movie'.

We have to accept the reality that for whatever reason, the majority of Top Critics dislike this film.

There are plenty of CGI filled movies that Top Critics like, this isn't one of them.

As usual, tough luck for DC fans.

So same ballpark as MOS, Aquaman probably gets a pass since he's a less popular character which means less expectations from critics giving the film more of a pass. Both films have the same average score. (~6.2/10)

But RT doesn't really matter this time anyways as the BO looks poised to do really well. (800+ at least) So it can get a sequel and improve.

Reviews from RT critics:

Jenna Busch, Scott Menzel and Scott O'Connell are RT-approved critic, so their reviews will be counted no matter published or not:

Critics below only have their reviews counted if their reviews are published at the designated publications.

Germain Lussier from Slashfilm/ io9: Positive

Andrew Dyce from ScreenRant: Positive

Eric Eisenberg from CinemaBlend: Positive

Jim Vejvoda/ Mike Rougeau/ Tom Jorgensen from IGN (so only 1 review is counted): Positive

Terri Schwartz from IGN and Zap2zip: Positive

Erik Davis from CinemaCritical/ Movie.com: Positive

Spencer Perry from ComingSoon.net: Positive

Peter Sciretta from Slashfilm: Positive

Mike Cecchini from Den of Geek: Positive

Scott Wampler from Birth.Movies.Death: Positive

Dan Casey from Nerdist: Positive

Okay I know I'm almost a week late but when I opened this thread I thought RT would be on Black Panther's/ Into the Spiderverse's level.

WB probably should stop lifting social media embargo weeks before RT embargo to avoid some critics wildly praising the movie just so a couple of weeks later it turns out the movie is just average. I don't know about WB executives but even I am getting second-hand embarrassment about this.

WB should just stop trying to 'win' critics over especially in UK. The harsh and awful reviews are mostly from UK, well to hell with them they should not be getting no more events and special screenings.

Yeah, only invite them to screenings if they are gonna lie and pretend they loved the movie! :o

To be fair some bad critics seems like they didnt even paid attention to the movie or didnt watched it, either they are biased or they hate CBM, so what's the point, i dont like musicals and i never go to watch them, idk why they are so eager to go at something they know they will hate

Meh, with the whining. This is a win compared to most of DC's movies. If it can somehow make it to the low 70's DC is still on track.

I can understand having some issues with the movie in terms of plot and dialogue but come ON, man. How do you sit through a movie like this with your arms folded and not recommend it to people? These same people all gave high marks to Fury Road which is arguably a crazier more eccentric movie that focuses on action rather than character.

I see quite a few negative comments on facebook ads with Aquaman, which is obviously mostly from people who have yet to see the film, which is sad. Also, people complaining about this CGI?! My god I thought it looked beautiful. Reminded me a bit of Tron Legacy, absolutely stunning. Even the soundtrack was beautiful.

110 reviews in, still holding at 70%

I predict it’ll finish off around 65-68%

it climbed to 71% at one point today. That's still even reflected in Google. I say we still have a good chance stay in the 70%. It appears that many bad reviews come from the UK critics as Harle said. even the last bad review that put the percentage back down to 70% was from the UK. I am gonna wait and see as far as the review goes. One thing for sure it appears there is going to be a disparity between what critics think and what audiences think. Even if we stay in the 70s critically. I think audiences will like the film by MUCH MORE THAN THAT as it seems to be the case so far with social media reactions.

Yeah it seems like the audience score will be around 20 points higher than the critic score. Either way, this movie is already making big money so perhaps in the sequel , the writers can make whatever necessary changes to streamline the perceived issues with the script and make the sequel more personal and less sprawling

having seen the film I see why critics might not like it but me and my girlfriend both really liked this film, visually it's one of the coolest looking comic book films ever made. I think a few script tweaks really could have made this a classic but it's still a great time. I haven't seen the critics scores yet but if they aren't good I'd say I really disagree with them on this one.

Its good, for the most part, us Aquaman fanatics just wanted more, that's all.

I'm looking forward to debate more about this movie once it opens up and more people see it. I can see flaws in the movie but to me they're so small and Wan's directorial hand is so energetic that they become non issues. But from what I'm reading, the dialogue and plot REALLY bothered some people, enough to where it ruined the movie for them, whereas neither never really registered as a problem for me because I was just so swept up in everything else. I can think of other movies of a similar ilk that seemed to have gotten a pass at this and didn't do what Aquaman did nearly as well.
