A lot of people tend to bad mouth Dell computers particularly with the Mac commercials. My question is, are Dell computers really as bad as people say they are?

Their customer service is horrid. My laptop went bluescreen the first day I had it. They basically refused to send a new one. Instead wanted us to spend hours on the phone trying to fix it.

I love my bigass Dell laptop. :o I've never had any problems with it, and my husband hasn't ever had trouble with his desktop Dell.

I never call customer service for anything, so that's not a problem for me.

I've had mine for about a year and a half. I haven't had any real problems with it. I did recently have to replace the CD-ROM drive, but I don't consider that a big deal. I've upgraded the RAM twice, and that was rather easy. Also, upgrading the video card was a snap. The only other issues are simply system specs. Just not on par with today's systems, but that's to be expected.

My sister bought one from QVC. A couple of days or hours after it got here, the speaker messed up and she had to send it back, then she went to Bestbuy to get one but the sales person talked her out of it because he said that the Dell computers well...sucked. So she got an Hp and is now happy.

All of the sales people were telling the other costumers not to buy a Dell, they kinda groaned when people asked about them.

I don't have any more problems with Dells than I do with any other manufacturer. The company I work for buys exclusively Dell equipment...laptops, desktops, servers. All are generally pretty good...and we're horrible about updating End of Life servers...so we usually keep things around way longer than they should. And they usually all work fine. There are always some that break more than others...but that's true of anything. If you have enough you're bound to have a few bad ones in there. We've had Micron, HP, IBM, Gateways.....Dell has been better than all of them so far.

And our tech support is pretty good...but we're also paying for an enterprise support agreement...so that helps. I've never called in to support as a home user...so I can't speak to that.

My Dell desktop has served me well the last couple of years. :)

The problem with Dell is their horrid Customer Service and shady business practices. Never, I mean NEVER get into a payment plan with them, you'll be paying out thousands of dollars to them if you miss a couple of payments. They're actually being investigated in New York on the basis of a class action lawsuit because of it.

I work on Dell's all damn day. We usually don't have an issue with the Desktops here at work. If anything a power supply or a fan issue, but what do you expect working in a chocolate factory with all the cocoa and sugar everywhere. What we have issues with are the Dell D600 laptops. By far the biggest POS's ever created. We have gone through 50 motherboards in a week already because of the inferior parts Dell uses. Remember, companies go with the lowest offer when it comes to computers. And most companies has their deal with Dell. Dell sucks for a reason.

I have a 9 year old Desktop, and its NEVER faultered.

I think Dell is the best of the pre-made computers, on the non Apple side.
If you're getting a desktop you'd be better off building it yourself.

Used Dell desktops and have a Dell laptop. Never had any problems and the one time I had to call customer service, other than the thick Australian accent I had to decipher, the guy was helpful.

Dell sucks, 2 Dell Computers messed up on me after about a year each.

Yes. They are terrible, and they overprice their crap and the batteries and adapters suck ass. The graphic cards and sound cards suck too. STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM DELLS!!!

EDIT: And their pre-loaded software sucks.

all pre-made computers are bad, make your own for half the price like me :).

Dell doesn't make Graphic cards they buy them from companies and put them in. Same thing with the processor, Ram, sound card, Hard drive. They are basically just buying the pieces then putting them together for you then doubling the prices. the only thing they make are the Monitors, keyboard, mouse, Computer cases, Speakers printers and probably the motherboards, cpu cooling, and Powersupply.
For the video card they buy them from Either Nvidia or ATI, but for their big models i think they use Nvidia, and they make the best cards on the market. ATI is pretty good too. but it all depends what Dell model you buy, and what video card is in it, if you buy a cheep dell, its going to have cheap parts.
I saved over 2000 bucks when i built my desktop. compared to the Dell XPS 4000 bucks model...i basically made the same thing, for cheaper, i even think its better.

Lets put it this way.
I have used literally ALL brands of Laptops and Desktops I would imagine.
Honestly....from my perspective, no brand is better.

They all have lines that tend to be better (better physical engineering and the like)
Very similar to cars at times

You may get a lemon, you may get one that lasts forever as I have here in my home.

Roll the dice and see what you come up with.

This help?

Overall the Customer Service is fine, never had any problems with it. Dell's are solid computers just make sure you get the specs you want on the Dell & don't get an Intel Graphics Card.

I got my Dell back in early 2004, and it hasn't failed me yet. And I got one of the low-end $500 models (although there was a sale for a free hard drive upgrade from 40GB to 80GB at the time). I eventually had to upgrade my memory from 128MB to 1GB (or rather 1.12GB when I was done), and that worked out just fine.

I've had my Dell for three years and only had minor problems with it.

Like I have stated, its like gambling, most likely you are going to be ok, but then sometimes you might get a lemon...simple as that.
