ok, so i'm a computer blonde, so please bear with me.

i have a dell dimension 2400 desktop. i want to add some ram to it. a friend of mine got a new desktop and is selling parts of his old one, he had a dell 4800. he had like 5 ram sticks cuz he's a big time gamer, and is willing to sell me some for less than he's offering to others.

how can i find out if these are compatible with my computer?

Well I can't find the specs for the Dell 4800 RAM. The easiest way is to pull out one of your sticks and compare it to his. They should both have the type of RAM that they are on it.

well according to cnet you can max out at 2GB at RAM and you have DDR SDRAM... and i can't find anything about your friends 4800. Are You Sure it's a 4800?
but ddr is a pretty universal ram for a lot of motherboards but remember you can only have 2GB of ram all together so if u already have 1GB of Ram you can only buy another 1GB stick.
i'd find out for sure for motherboard your friend has before buying.

thanks for the advice guys

he said he had a 4800. i asked a friend of mine about this, and he said that i could try it in my computer and if it didn't work, it'd crash my computer or just wouldn't recognize it?

thats true... most likely u'd get a blue screen (BSOD) if it didnt work

if i do get the BSOD, if i remove the ram stick, will everything go back to normal?

i don't want t lose files or anything important

yeah if you do get the bsod... and you take out the stick of ram things will go back to normal

If the RAM isn't compatible, your computer probably won't even boot. It'll just beep when you try to turn it on. Also, you should really at RAM sticks in pairs.

I thought Dell computers work of A/B ram, if you have RAM in slot A you have to have the same Type of RAM in slot B, Just make sure you put them in right or it will fry your motherboard
