So, we've got one more month in the year, and I'm looking at the releases we've got coming up, and I'm really wondering just what films this past year are really worthy of nominations? I think if anything, now we're just going to get a whole rack of films that no one really saw, and/or wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in hell of being nominated had it still be only five nominations.

I don't think the Academy can suffer another awards show with low ratings due to the fact that most nominated no one has heard of. I know I would not tune in if the majority of nominations were movies that I have never heard of. Most only watched last year due to Hugh Jackman but next year if the nominations are ****** I doubt most will tune in for the two host

Expanding to 10 was always a mistake and overreaction to TDK not making the cut. There really aren't that many years where 10 nominees really would be justified.

As far as it goes, I expect that it will look pretty similar to past years. Invictus, Up in the Air, and Nine will likely emerge out of Oscar season with nominations. And who knows, those three might makes some money as they don't seem to be bleak, difficult, controversial, character studies. Precious and The Hurt Locker have their constituencies. Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, and Up have chances.

I don't think there's going to be many runaway blockbusters, but I tend to think that it's not going to be a repeat of 2005 either.

My personal nominees for BEST FILM:

1. District 9
2. The Road
3. Inglorious Basterds
4. Avatar
5. Up/Coraline (Yes. It's time)
6. Invictus
7. Watchmen (It could totally happen :wow: )
8. The Hurt Locker
9.
10.

I can't think of any more.

Pretty much. As a film in general, regardless of how much money it made, or whether it was a comic book movie, or that Heath Ledger died, bottom line is that it was one of the best films of the year, and those who would argue otherwise are a miniscule minority by comparison. Just about every aspect of that film was damn near perfect (Bale's voice as Batman still sucks ass, though!). For a film that was just over two and a half hours, there's not one bit of wasted footage. EVERY minute of EVERY scene was relevant and added to the story.

So to come to this year, and not really have that many films that have managed to captivate a variety of audiences the way that film did last year, and there are twice as many nominations up for grabs, it just seems pretty anti-climactic. Even before we know what's going to be nominated this year.

I think their top10's will be better than their top5's to be honest. People say they changed it because of the dark knight but they honestly ignore just as good or better films almost every year.

Moon. Hurt Locker. Precious. Up. Invictus. Star Trek may get some nods. Where the Wild Things Are. District 9 is in play this upcoming year. Inglorious Basterds.

That's 9 by my count. I'm sure they'll find some other film that'll be worth it that no one has heard of .

How you can justify Avatar before it's even out is beyond me. The only bankable Oscar nominee that isn't out yet IMO is Invictus. But that's because Eastwood is an incredible director. Much better than Cameron's overrated ass.

I havne't seen The lovely Bones but i could see that getting in there because there is alot of buzz on Stanley Tucci's performance.

I'd see Hurt Locker and Up both being in.

Up would be more likely than Coraline.

And while I enjoyed Watchmen, the film's go three strikes against it: Critically mixed, lower than desired box office, and comic book stigma. If Dark Knight couldn't get nominated with almost unanimous critical acclaim and a worldwide gross of close to ONE BILLION DOLLARS, Watchmen doesn't stand a chance. Granted, I assume you're just joking.

I could see Watchmen getting some nods for Art Design, Music, Cinematography, Production design, Costume Design.

Well it's not like the Watchmen comic book ever won any awards. Just having fun.
Also, Cameron is not overrated.

Eh, Cameron's flick has every right to be on the list pre-release as much as Eastwoods. Just because you don't like the guy does not change he has a shelf full of Oscars as well.

Clint is always making ''oscar'' movies. its sad. i am not saying that make a cartton. but make something that is not so obvious for oscars.

That's kind of a copout. There are plenty of directors you could accuse of making "Oscar movies", whatever the hell that even means. Spielberg only directs Oscar movies by your logic. He'll gladly executive produce movies that are just out to be fun action movies like Transformers or Eagle Eye, but would he direct them? F*** no! 'Cause they're just out to be fun action movies! And the academy doesn't find any merit in fun action movies when it comes time to nominate Best Picture. With the exception of maybe the last Indiana Jones movie and War of the Worlds, Spielberg's made countless movies in recent years that you could easily accuse of just being made to get Oscars.

Minority Report is not an oscar movie.

Clint's interests these days are in character based drama. Hardly seems like something to give him grief over. That's been a pretty constant theme in his directoral career since the 70s.

Honestly, I think there's always 5 to 10 great pictures a year. Whether they're nominated is another question, but I'm certain that you can fill a respectable ballot without having to resort to junk. And, really, the "I haven't heard of that" card, I think says more about the audience than the film at times.

This is somewhat of a bad year for movies because instant classics are no where on the horizon.

But on the other hand there were a lot great movies that will certainly be cherished in the future, especially the great year in Sci-fi.

District 9,Moon,Star Trek are all very good (as far as i'm concerned District 9 is great). Then you have Inglorious Basterds,A Serious Man,Up In The Air,An Education,The Hurt Locker,Precious...

Animation too has had a terrific year:Up,Fantastic Mr.Fox,Coraline,The Princess and The Frog,Ponyo.

The foreign front has also been having an unusually strong year,Un Prophete and The White Ribbon are the two best movies i've seen this year and there are several movies that i haven't and heard very good things about.

On top of that there are still several movies that are very hyped to be released:Nine,The Lovely Bones,Avatar and Invictus.

It's not a bad year,it just lacks the There Will Be Blood,No Country For Old Men type of a movie.

Star Trek is in noooo way an oscar movie.

I think its really wrong to call it a bad year before the year has ended.

I agree,it's fun and entertaining,it's in the same category as Spider-Man 2,Iron Man,X2.

But i don't think it deserves a best picture nod at all.
