The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this morning that there will be five nominees in the Visual Effects category this year:

The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finalized the rules for the 83rd Academy Awards at its most recent meeting (June 22). The most significant change is in the Visual Effects category, which will now feature five nominees rather than three.

Since 1963, when the Special Effects award was discontinued and new separate categories for achievements in visual effects and sound effects were established, the only period during which it was possible to have five visual effects nominees was 1977 through 1979. In only one of those years (1979) were five achievements actually recognized. Between 1980 and 1995, two or three productions could be nominated; since 1996 the rules have dictated there be exactly three nominees.

In the Animated Feature Film category, the rule governing running time for a motion picture to qualify was changed from at least 70 minutes to greater than 40 minutes, which is consistent with the running time requirements for feature films in all other categories. The running time for a motion picture to qualify as an animated, live action or documentary short film has been and continues to be a maximum of 40 minutes. The previous 70-minute threshold for an animated feature had left a gap for films that ran between 40 and 70 minutes, effectively preventing them from being able to qualify as either features or shorts.

Also in the Animated Feature Film category, a sentence regarding motion capture was added to clarify the definition of an animated film. The language now reads: “An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of greater than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.”

Other modifications of the 83rd Academy Awards rules include normal date changes and minor “housekeeping” changes.

Rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors for approval.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Finally!

With 5 spots, I can breavly say that these three films has great chance to be nominated:

Tron Legacy
Inception
Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Also in the Battle:

Chronicles of Narnia 3
Iron man 2
Alice in Wonderland

until recently, i swear it was more than 3 back in the day, then the Academy made it 3 maybe within the past ten years.

anyway:

Alice in Wonderland had good visual effects but The Knave of Hearts (Glover) had one of the worst animation I've seen in a mainstream movie.

Alice in Wonderland looked bad to me, I would replace that with Clash of the Titans if we are going for weak nominees. Hell Sorcerers Apprentice looks like the effects are amazing too.

What movies do you think are sure nom?

I think: Tron Legacy, Inception, Deathly Hallows: Part 1

I think the designs were good in 'Alice' but the animation was uneven. Like what I've said before, the Knave had terrible animation when he moved his arms around and his horse looked like horse crap when he galloped.

About freaking time. There were many movies, like ROTF, that deserved nomination in visual effects but didn't thanks to the restriction of 3 noms in this category. With so many blockbuster movies sporting state-of-the-art special effects, this decision is long overdue.

I think Iron Man 2 is a lock as well. Anything after that is up in the air.

The Last Airbender deserves a nomination before Iron Man 2 gets one

lets just pray to god this doesn't mean the crap wolves in twilight will be nominated

And the Special Effects > Story epidemic in Hollywood continues.

i wouldn't say thats what this represents, just that there has been a lot of films with fairly great fx work and that limiting it to 3 nominees has become somewhat impractical. personally i'm glad to see it since some of these movies require the work of thousands of artists who otherwise rarely have their work recognized

This is good.

I have to disagree, there were some parts that looked dodgy especially Rourke's second suit.

Won't the Academy just go the Lord Of The Rings route & just wait to nominate & give any wins to Deathly Hallows: Part 2 instead of both movies ?

Thats a good question im not sure yet.

Don't think so. LOTR win for Visual Effects three years on a roll. Hollows: Part 1, I think will have good chances to be nominated in Art, and Effects categories. Part 2 will deffenetly be the bigger movie, and I think it has a 95% sure noms in both Art, and Effects categories, with huge chances in Makeup and Music.

But as Part 2 is a lock for Visual Effects, I think Part 1 has good chance if the competition is not big (witch is not thus far).

Tron Legacy doesnt only have a chance at being nominated. they have a big chance to win.

Yeah they do. There hasnt been any eyepopping vfx movie this summer. Tron Legacy's VFX looks very amplified and unique just by the trailers.

Tron Legacy is an orgasm for my eyes
