The first issue of the Amazing Spider-Man to feature a single Spidey in 20 years hits comic book stores this week, and the first page shows the webbed wonder's alter ego Peter Parker locking lips with a woman who isn't wife Mary Jane Watson.


"The first page is a real shocker and it's done on purpose. It's a bit of a slap of reality to longtime readers," said Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada.


Those readers are still reeling from the company's controversial move in the most recent issue, where the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler and his missus had their marriage wiped out.


The supernatural split has enraged many spider-fans who'd invested years in following the relationship and were offended by the split. Some have been venting their anger online, organizing campaigns to send Marvel torn-up Spider-Man comics and threatening boycotts.

Seems obvious now that Joe Quesada's strategy is like Howard Stern's--really stick it to the long time fans and outrage them so much with shock tactics that people will "tune in" to see what happens next. Personally, I hope it backfires on him.

Is this the worst time ever for a Spider-man fan?

I'm just curious. I mean the Clone Saga was bad in the long run, but was it really this bad? Come on now, how can anyone actually defend this stuff? Joey Q is doing all this to satisfy himself, thats it. He doesn't care one bit about "long term" readers or anything like that.

Anyway, it's clearly obvious now that Joe Quesada is attempting to employ the same strategy as Howard Stern--shock the fans and get them so outraged that they'll end up buying the books just to see what happens next. And I hope it really backfires on him.

I hope not... because then we'd have to do a "Clone Saga" Rewrite all over again just to go back to the previous status quo, which will inevitably just confuse fans even more...

I wasn't too thrilled with the outcome of OMD nor did I even remotely like its execution. But IF they end up having to "retcon" (F^%@#ck, I hate that f^%#&%cking word ) the stuff from OMD, then the Spider-Man comics will be running rampant like a headless chicken, much like it was after the complicated 2 1/2 years of back'n forth that was the Clone Saga of the 90's. Had they made up their minds back then and stuck to their guns, we would have never endured that nor see the needless return of Norman Osborn, with the ridiculous status of having been responsible for every bad event in Peter's life.

It's not much different now with the seemingly needless return of Harry, but Marvel seems to have a clearer purpose with the Spider-Books (unlike after the Clone Saga), so I'm hoping it works because as I said, if it doesn't, then we'll be in an even bigger mess than we've seen in years... including the farce that was OMD.

And that, my fellow Spider-Peers, is merely my two cents...

If you really think this was all done for JQ's satisfaction, then you're an idiot.

JQ does NOT OWN Spider-Man... his bosses OWN Spider-Man... and this storyline would NOT have happened if JQ's BOSSES didn't approve of said storyline. He probably had to schmooze them, but the bottom line is that Marvel Comics Inc. decided to go ahead with this story (not just JQ) because they believe that in the long run, it will help out Spider-Man. It doesn't matter if myself and you disagree with this direction, because a few people on a message board hardly matter.

And I do believe that in his heart, he and Marvel Comics Inc. are doing the right thing for Spider-Man in the long run.

Do I agree with said direction? Not particularly... but I don't own Spider-Man, so I don't have a say in how stories develop.

But as I mentioned above, I hope it does work, because I don't want to see another year's worth of issues having to deal with "retconning" things back to what they were like, because in all honesty, the state of Spider-Man books in the last 15 years (with a few glaring exceptions) have been crap.

I am glad that Supervillains may have their stories retold with better character development etc... however, that is what Ultimate is for.

I am extremely upset that Peter is single, and has lost his entire "life" (Mary-Jane) and is now a confused teenager/early 20 year old. So upset that it outweighs any of the possible benefits that I see with this move. It's supposed to be Spider-man and Mary Jane, stop beating around the bush for the next "X" years it'll take to get there again.

The age part of your post that I highlighted is incorrect.

He is NOT younger... in fact, he is the same age as he was during OMD.

Things did NOT go back in time... every Spider-Man story with a few exceptions have occured just as you read them with the exception that Peter and Mary Jane did NOT get married...

So in Kraven's Last Hunt, it was Peter's love for Mary Jane that helped him dig out of his own grave... that love remained unchanged whether they were married or not...

However, something occured to them recently that cause them to split up.. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

He did unmask during Civil War, but nobody remembers who he is... I suspect that they will touch upon this at some point in the relatively near future.

While OMD sucked donkey balls, I think we're in for a fun ride in the Spider-Mobile for the first time in a loooooooong time.

Until, it sorts itself out, Brand New Day, is a story arc within Amazing Spider-Man.If it pans out, it will be part of a rebooted continuity. That does not erase the continuity of the past, it just adds a New Continuity to the Spider-Mans Mythos.There has not been an unbroken continuity within Amazing Spider-Man since the end of volume one. And even there we have the Clone Saga that did and did not occur.Oy!

Sure they green light it, but Joe Q is primarily the one to blame out of all of this. His idea, his dream to see a single, old, lonely Peter, again.

Hopefully your stock won't suffer because of this. I know that if it immediately disappoints, I can see mephisto or doctor strange coming around to quickly undo this mess.
