Comics Asm 611

I think you're a brave wonderful soul... let's hug'n kiss.

:yay:

I just heard it announced on Marvel's website that Deadpool will be a permanent addition to Spidey's cast..........written 3x a month by Joe Kelly.............you should subscibe now before they change their mind....

I love Joe Kelly's Deadpool, but the art is terrible.

It looks like Spidey has a broken jaw on that first page.

Still, I'll buy it. But I'm having painful flashbacks to Humberto Ramos.

EDIT: To be clear, the 'broken jaw Spidey' I'm referring to is here: http://www.spidermanreviews.com/2009/11/amazing-spider-man-611-preview-art.html Not in the preview posted.

I loved Ramos when he was just doing covers. I loved the style. Not so much when he does an issue. They should let Ramos and Bachalo collaborate. For the competition (to be fair, I've liked Bachalo's recent spidey work.)

Two mouths you can't stop from talking.

I dont mind what the reason is for these to be together in a story, its just going to see DP and Spidey come together in some craziness.

I see what you're doing here. And I approve of your tactics.

Hope Deadpool reminds Spidey about the whole Mephisto-marriage-deal like he did last time (#50 Cable & Deadpool):

Overall, I agree, except I think the art works for Deadpool; maybe that's because I haven't read much Deadpool.

Also, SuperHeroGirl, thanks for the panel, I didn't know about that!

Here's my thoughts on this issue:

Lady Kravens haven't interested me yet, though there seems to be an Aeon Flux nod in a panel near the beginning. Did anyone else see mechanized tongues interacting? I guess Canete worked on the original animation.

The art for the first five pages actually corresponds well especially with Kelly's humor. It doesn't do so well with the following two Peter pages, however, in fact it totally fails here; both the art and Kelly's apparent boredom with writing about the ol' Parker luck.

Lady Stilt-Man was funny enough (in a cutesy sorta way) crying at the end of her very first defeat with Spidey consoling her.

In fact, this issue is crammed packed with humor, almost too much humor, which gets lost or if misunderstood one can accuse Kelly of trying too hard; but I don't think that would be true. Although I'm not a Deadpool fan, I get the feeling Kelly is and knows how to write him. It's just Deadpool reminds me of a demented WB cartoon character, like an evil Bugs Bunny or something. The humor almost totally escapes me.

The art wasn't totally terrible, believe it or not. It just wasn't traditional Spidey art and has accents on his nose and ears which I dislike. Deadpool launching a missile happens to be one of my favorites, however.

I've been educated on what breaking the fourth wall is by this issue (and fellow CBR posters): Deadpool's aware that he's being written, making him even look crazier to the other Marvel characters. I don't think I like it, it's too easy to write, imo.

So this issue doesn't do so well because it's suppose to be a Spidey comic which it isn't yet technically is. That sucks in a way, although Spidey's moma quips are much better then Deadpool's.

Final letter grade: (barely) C-, it isn't an epic fail, merely passes.

(Also it was really cool that Marvel didn't hype this issue as a Gauntlet prequel.)

All right, here’s my over all thoughts about this issue:

*First off, let me just come right out and say that art is this comic is horrible! I understand Eric Canete is supposed be some “god” when it comes to animation, that he was a disciple of the innovative Peter Chung when working on Aeon Flux. Well newsflash ladies and gentlemen: just because you’re a great animator doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a great illustrator, especially since animation, by it’s very definition, requires movement, while illustration doesn’t. And I’m sorry, but Canete’s “illustrations” are just bad. Sure at times, looks okay, albeit in a highly stylized form, but there’s only so much distortion you can stomach. And it looks especially bad whenever he gives us perspective shots of figures coming at the panel that look as though were seeing them through a “fish-eye lens“ which is quite often. Other times, you can barely tell what the hell is going on because it’s so sketchy.

*However, if there is one good thing about Canete’s style, it’s at least distinctive enough to draw our attention to it--especially away from Joe Kelly’s script. On the surface, it’s a rather simple, straight-forward, done in one story: Deadpool gets hired by Kraven’s wife, Sasha, and daughter, Ana, to distract Spider-Man long enough for Ana Kravinoff to kidnap Mattie Franklin. The problem is, Kelly has to be funny and outlandish since the Merc with a Mouth is involved, and you would think that the guy responsible for making Wade Wilson what he is today could pull it off. But you would be wrong!

*Oh, sure, some of it is amusing, such as such as the build-up towards Deadpool to whip out his “MammaGeddon” or the mother of all “Yo Momma” jokes, or using “Lady Stilt-Man” to poke fun at the trend of female villains adopting male villain’s monikers, abut much of the time, the humor felt so incredibly forced. References to Geoff Johns and Blackest Night, Deadpool’s crack about web-fluid as a euphemism for *********ion, Dead pool’s “angels and devils” (a joke he used back in issue #576 for Spider-Man, by the way), the “mugging” by editors in the editor boxes, and the repeated “BlahblahblahInsertWordsBlahBlahBlah” all just reeked of desperation on Kelly’s part.

*At least I felt semi-intrigued about Sasha and Ana’s plans involving Mattie Franklin and how this could possibly tie-in to their overall revenge against Spider-Man. Not to mention, given Madame Web’s close association with Mattie, there’s definitely a sense she feels that she’s betrayed her being that she was forced by Ana to help in finding her. Although, the drawback to this is that, unless you’re familiar with the third Spider-Woman, it’s probably not going to mean much.

So maybe it’s because I’m not much of fan of Eric Canete, or Joe Kelly’s brand of humor, or that Deadpool is getting way too overexposed as of late. Whatever. A completely forgettable issue and not worth your time, in my opinion.

First Kaine, now Mattie Franklin?!? What is this, 90's month?

Haven't read the issue. WAS looking forward to it (since I loved Kelly's original Deadpool run), but I have only heard bad things, so maybe I'll skip it. Maybe Kelly (like Byrne, Frank Miller, Claremont, Loeb and others) has lost that special touch over the years.

I can't stand Deadpool, but I liked the issue... and as bad as the art was, it kinda worked for the story...

A far better story than the Ben Reilly one, and a good set-up for what's to come...

:yay:

I can't stand Deadpool,

I don't compute?

This issue wasn't about the art, it was all about the dialogue between Spidey and 'Pool. Which delivered immensly, especially some of the jokes with Blackest Night which was great.

Some of you are too harsh with some thoughts, everyone i know that read it, loved the interactions, especially the great momma jokes.

Oh... I thought the issue was funny and quite good considering that I thought the art wasn't my cup'o tea and that I can't stand DP...

:yay:

I have to admit, I really didn't care for this issue that much. I'd have to say it's probably my least favorite since BND started. I'll have to read it again when I have some time (although I seem to accumulated a big stack of unread stuff. I really need more free time.)

Aloha,
Also not a big DP fan but, I expected insanity and that's what I got. This is a book you have to read more than once. And it's meant to be a set up for The Gauntlet.
