Atheist Billboards Deep In The Heart Of Texas

I've not seen any billboard that forces anything on anyone

I'm not quite sure why atheists would want to be right. They won't find out til their dead, and they won't even find out because their consciousness will just cease to exisit. Not exactly a good thing to be right about.
The same thing can be said about the people of the 3 Abrahamic religions. Some Christians especially, preach about Jesus and God in a effort to sway the opinion of others. Why can't a certain selection of Athiests do the same?

Why?

That was kind of my point, why can't both sides just leave each other alone and let one another have their opinions?

Would you like to fade into nothingness?

Would you like to fade into nothingness?
You say that as if I have a choice:huh:. Believing in some religion isn't going to magically alter my fate, but knowing and understanding my fate could drastically alter my present and have a positive impact on how we behave and conduct ourselves as a society.

Right, but this goes back to what Lantern said. Their egos get in the way I suppose.

I had no problems being in nothingness for millions of years before my birth.

Buddhists believe they fade into nothingness, and they seem to get along just fine.

I don't understand the point though.

"Hey everyone! There's nothing out there! Whooo!"

If there is no God.... then who cares? Why talk about somethings lack of existence?

Because if people acknowledged that nothing, a great deal of the worlds problems would cease to exist.

Why not? It's our mortality that defines us. If more people knew that this is all we have, maybe they'd try alot harder to make this world a better place.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

It's pointless to find like minded people? It's pointless to organize to insure that a minority's rights aren't being violated?

What does that have to do with atheism?

Methinks FAMILY GUY has done more for atheism with last night's episode than all the billboards in the world.

I don't get this attitude of "They don't believe in anything! Why should they organize?".

Sounds like spin.

I could care less if they organize. But the spend money simply to profess you don't believe in something? Organizing via a billboard? Really?

What is discussed at Atheist meetings?
How 'bout the fact that atheists are the least trusted minority in the country, or the fact that an atheist, no matter how intelligent, politically savvy, or morally upright would never have a chance of success in American politics?

Atheists are now an organized religion. It is hilarious that some are now doing what they thought was stupid. They will start meeting weekly, monthly, etc...at a meeting place, they will start handing out pamphlets, and they will start preaching the word of no god.
Seriously, it is VERY ironic. :hehe:

But honestly I wish people would just shut up about religion and "no religion" for that matter. Imo, its ridiculous when people feel the need to advertise there religion in such manners.

Would you like to fade into nothingness?
If I lived a fulfilling life on Earth, why should it matter? As long as I was happy, successful, and basically a good person while I was alive, why would I need for an imaginary bully in the sky to party with my ghost for the rest of eternity?

Seriously. I'm entirely comfortable with the fact that I don't know what's going to happen after I die, but in my mind the odds are in favor of there being no afterlife. I don't need the comfort of a set path that tells me the simple answers to things that are far beyond my comprehension. I'm not afraid of simply ceasing to exist, and I'm not afraid to be wrong either.

I remember seeing a picture of a billboard that said, in big black letters on white,
"GOD Listens"
and someone had tagged under it.
"to Slayer"

thought it was hilarious

To make something perfectly clear: atheists who form groups and meet regularly are not just talking about the fact that they don't believe in gods/supernatural - that would be pointless. What they do talk about, however, is WHY they don't believe - they learn about how/why each person either lost their religious beliefs or never had them to begin with.

To get a good look at the kind of conversations had (as well as interesting dialogues with believers as well), simply watch a few episodes of the Atheist Experience online.

I don't understand how so many people will just assume who atheists are based on what seems like an incredibly shallow amount of information

Most atheists aren't "out to get religion", you know

There's a lot in this world people wish they weren't right about. It shouldn't be an argument about who's right an who's wrong since everything Ive ever heard in argument for either case is opinion. Scientists might explain something with some scientific term while the Bible says its something else.

This thread might as well be merged - it's going to turn into another religion thread; I can sense it

Really, it just sounds more like a club than a religious meeting like some of you are suggesting. I don't see anything wrong with like minded people wanting to get together. Society can be pretty hostile towards atheists and it might be a haven for some people to be able to gather with others that think the same way. Hell, even George W made a statement about atheists and nonbelievers not being true citizens. It just sounds very informal...stop by, find out what we are about, have a burger and a beer. They are meeting at a bar/restaurant for crying out loud...not a temple.

Well that makes way more sense than how I was trying to put it. Well said!

As opposed to going to hell because I didn't subscribe to the "right" religion out of the hundreds that currently exist?

Yeah. Nothingness doesn't seem so bad.

Besides, Matt, if I were to become nothing, why the **** would I care??

See the flaw in the logic?
