Yea, I was kinda surprised at how well written the characters were. Especially Moses. Great character arc.

I loved those two little pyromaniac kids too.

They're all thugs, and their way of apologizing is saying if they knew she lived there they wouldn't have robbed her.

I would have liked it more if they just kept them being who they were without trying to force us to feel sorry for them. The movie wimps out at the end with the pheromones too. Aliens were attacking people without the smell all night, but only at this particular moment are they blind to everyone without it.

Asking the audience to sympathize with these kids - who are, yes, clearly in the wrong - is no different that what most crime films do: Goodfellas, The Godfather series, etc X 1000.

Those movies don't try to make us sympathize with their protagonist's actions. We're thrown into their lives and experience it from their perspective. I liked that they weren't nice kids and the fact they were thugs. It's when the movie tries to justify their behavior is when I was like "screw this." The end chant treating him like a hero made me cringe. Even Moses holding onto the UK flag to survive. It's all so ham-handed.

Moses leading the aliens away from the rest of the people isn't what I'm talking about. I'm fine with that (at least as it was presented; I hate the pheromones). It's trying to force in the fact he lives alone, and having the woman come around on him. As if it's society's fault or justifies the things he does. It also doesn't explains the actions of the rest of them who have parents. The movie went from being fun alien film with thugs, to a glorification of them.

The movie never said Moses and his crew were justified in mugging her. She did come around and forgive them after getting to know them and maybe sympathizing but I don't think it ever justified it.

I don't get what's so wrong with the pheromone thing, everyone touched the female alien or somehow came in contact with whoever did. So it spread that way.

Only Moses had it on him in the blue light. Plus the monsters went after the little kids, the rapper and his friends, and none of them were had it on them either.

I thought the the Rapper/drug dealer (Hi-Hatz) touched the Alien he picked it up and put sunglasses on it in the Weed room. The police had there hands all over Moses when they arrested him so got it on them.

I don't think the monster went after probs and mayhem (the little kids). I think the aliens also attacked people that attacked them like when the girls in their flat.

I don't think the movie apologized for the way the kids acted in fact the whole point of the movie was actions have consequences which is brought up one of the characters to Moses. Showing Moses background was not letting him off the hook for his behaviour but giving the audience possibly the chance to understand why he was the way he was.

Much like the nurse Sam she over the course of the movie she grew to she them less as faceless monsters and more as misguided kids.

Moses was not a evil kid he didn't want the younger kids getting hurt which is why he told them to go home and he took responsibility for the trouble he brought to the block to the risk of his own life.

Also the girls were vocal in disapproving of the boys criminal life style. They were not pleased when they heard he robbed the nurse Sam.

So glad this movie is finally out on dvd. Checked it out today, and I absolutely loved it. When it comes to kids vs. aliens, Attack The Block puts Super 8 to shame. And I was a PA on Super 8, so I think that says something..

I think they were supposed to be a little offputting in the beginning. I mean, from a film theory perspective, we were introduced to Sam (the nurse) first, and so that's where our sympathies go to immediately. She's mugged by some punks, and then the movie moves over to their perspective. So, even though we're watching them, we're left with our first impression: punks. It takes a well-written arc to really make us root for these kids, and Attack The Block really pulled that off.

Oh yeah , I knew where it was going from the reviews. They do pull it off nicely but Pest lived up to his name throughout.

I've seen it a few times now, and it's had a few weeks to settle, but I've made up my mind. This is my favorite 2011 film I've seen so far. It's one of those works of genre filmmaking that makes me feel so alive. It's smart, it's funny, it's propulsively paced, it's has revelatory child performances, it has one of the greatest designs for a movie alien I've ever seen, and it's about something. It's assured, confident, sincere filmmaking at its best, and the end has made me weepy every time I've seen it. And it's a debut film. That's amazing that this is a feature film debut. It's the best first feature I've seen since Blood Simple. I can't wait to see Joe Cornish's next film.

I loved the alien design so much. It's a really simple concept, absolutely black bodies with glow-in-the-dark teeth, yet it's so effective and captivating. Great idea there.

Finally saw this film yesterday after a long wait and it undoubtedly delivered. The plot is great and the soundtrack by Basement Jaxx is awesome and add to the authentic feel of the urban environment in the film. Credit must be given to John Boyega who portrays Moses. When on-screen, he's completely compelling to look at. Balancing laughs and thrills, Attack the Block is an impressive debut film by Joe Cornish.

John Boyega is going places. What a performance. It was the body language that sold me that this kid is the real deal. Delivering a few "****s" and some hooligan slang, impressive, sure. But, and this is going to seem minor, that scene where he slowly, cautiously approaches the peephole to see what's going outside in the hall, look at the way he moves. The way he's hesitant, and then "screw it" and he goes for it and uses his bat to push up his hat to look out the door. It's brilliant. It could have so easily been affected and faux-badass, but he sells it so completely it's practically an invisible moment. That was when I went "this kid is the real deal and then some."
