again this age old question, i've used avg for a while but recently i've heard nothing but bad things about it.

which is the best free anti virus programmes

I use Avast. But I've only heard good things about avg. What bad things have people been saying about it?

i use avg, never have used avast. used ZoneAlarm once but I hated that

I have Avast on all of my machines and like it a lot. I put AVG on machines and it's really good too. You'll be satisfied with either one.

Can Avast get rid of adware? I suspect that my mom's computer has adware but after scanning through with AVG, it came up empty.

i used AVG for little while before i got Norton with my new computer and its good i guess
but also if you want a good spyware removal program use Spybot Search and Destroy

Just like Kane said. Spybot's one of the best for getting rid of adware and spyware. Combine that with either avg or avast, and you should be good to go.

is anyone familiar with kapersky?

I've heard that's pretty good too. Never used it myself.

If you want to get rid of adware or spyware, I recommend Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. I use them on all of my machines and when I work on PC's at work.

malwarebytes saved my old computer many a time.

Wow, I just downloaded Malwarebytes based on one of the suggestions above and within 30 seconds it found 17 infected objects. AVG and Spybot both can't find anything. Jeezus I hate viruses
