The Avengers Avengers VS Adoptees

Oy vey. People read into things too much. It was a joke with Thor deflecting the terrible things that Loki did by pointing out there is no blood. It wasn't "He killed because he is adopted," or "He is less because he is adopted." Hell, one of the running themes of Thor throughout the movie was that Thor loved his brother and wanted him to stop and redeem himself.

I can't remember what movie it was but have seen that same line said by Bruce Willis and see it all the time on nbc sitcoms

As an atheist, I'd like to completely disown that kind of smarmy, smug attitude.

I too am an atheist. Now that that's out of the way. Why did you leave out the last part of my post?

As for the "One God" line. There won't be any complaints because Atheists are smart. Why complain about an American from the 40's who believes in God?

If you take what I said out of context it makes me look like a TOTAL *****e. I'll accept smarmy and smug but don't add *****e.

This subject has turned into a 12-page saga on another forum I read. They've got people starting letter campaigns to Disney/Marvel to get the line changed.

They've also got a bunch of adoptees/adoptive parents telling them to chill out.

Keep in mind, this subject has apparently offended adoptees in other films, from what I was able to find out after reading more about this:
Tangled
Lilo & Stitch
Despicable Me
ELF
Annie
Angels in the Outfield
Meet the Robertsons

Basically, anything that involves an orphan, an adoption, or any reference to "real parents".

On one hand, I can understand why it would be difficult when a little one who has been through foster care or an adoption simply doesn't understand what was so funny.

But since the line in Avengers is clearly about Loki and Thor's sudden backtracking when he realized he was defending a mass-murderer, and not about all adoptees in the universe, offending all adoptees was not the intent of that line, and it wasn't offensive.

And yes, the whole controversy is silly. I thought it was funniest lines of the movie. :oldrazz:

They're irritated with India always being depicted as a 3rd world Hell hole by Hollywood. China is the same way.

Show them The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel instead? The funny thing was, I read a review that nitpicked at the fact that India was just a little too pretty.

Hmm. You can't have it both ways, eh?

I guess there'll always be someone who'll get offended by something, no matter how silly;

sad, but true.

Alright, this is stupid, I'm adopted and I laughed until tears came on that line. if anyone should be offended it should be me, by birth parents had mental illness for gosh sakes. But I'm fine! People need to take a joke and enjoy the greatest movie of the year.

I remember Disney had to change a line from the song "Arabian Nights" from Aladdin. The original line was something like "we will cut off your ear if we don't like your face."

Of course this is totally different and a total over reaction. I find it amazing they would react to this, but not to the fact that even after all Loki does, Thor considers him his brother and is trying to help him.

This. There shouldn't even be a debate because Thor is trying tthroughout the movie to get Loki to stop.

My mom was adopted, and some of my friends were adopted. None of them are offended at the line. It wasn't like, let's say, the line from Dodgeball where Vince Vaughn's character tells a little girl, "You were adopted, your parents don't even love you."

It's pretty well-established in BOTH Thor and The Avengers that Thor and his father care deeply for Loki. It's just that Loki couldn't handle being in Thor's shadow because he was adopted, just like some kids can't handle the fact that they were adopted. It happens. It doesn't mean that every adopted child is going to turn into a supervillain. Haha.

Oh whatever, I'm rambling: My point is that it was a harmless joke, and people need to lighten up. There's definitely a certain line to cross when it comes to jokes, but I don't feel that line was even close to being crossed.

People actively look for things to complain about. They want attention.

This is true to a certain extent. There are some movies that cross the line. I just don't think The Avengers crossed that line. Not even close.

I'll give an example: I have two brothers who are special needs (one of them, who had Down Syndrome, passed away almost a year ago). I remember when a lot of special needs interest groups went after Tropic Thunder for the "You never go full-******" dialogue. I wasn't offended because in context to the movie, they weren't making fun of people with mental and developmental disabilities; they were making fun of how moronic Hollywood viewed these people.

On the flip side, there was a recent movie that crossed the line: The Change-Up. Aside from it being a god-awful movie, there was an unnecessary and downright *****ey line about how Jason Bateman's kids "looked a little 'Downsy.'" Was there a point to that line? Nope. It was just there to make a joke at the expense of a specific group of people. In moments like that, THAT'S when outrage is warranted.

It's been said several times before, but seriously: the only people who would take offense to this are people looking to be offended. Idiots..

Pretty much that small group of people that want attention and have been making a stink about every little thing that isn't PC this past decade. I won't say what type of people they are because I don't want this to turn into something that should be in the political thread.

I, too, am adopted, and I thought the line was hilarious. Some people are just dying to be offended.

The movie made $200 million dollars in it's opening weekend, so now everyone with a pet cause will dissect the movie and come out of the woodwork trying to grab some of the spotlight the movie is getting. If the movie was a flop, this wouldn't have been mentioned.

This is dumb, but still not as dumb as the conservative Christian group that was complaining about Nightcrawler being very religious and gay in X2. Apparently Alan Cumming and Nightcrawler were the same person to them.

oh good lord. Are people that bored? I bet these are also people who think taking a REQUIRED P.E. Class is too hard on them too. Sheesh

Im with you Franklin. *****ebag response to a reasonable post.

Next the adoptees are going to want to be treated like regular people!

LOL. Take a joke people.

Bruce Wayne is not going to appreciate that line. :o

Seriously... seriously?!

I don't drink but somedays people just make me want to take eight random shots of tequila. Ugh.
