Bite-Sized Review: Still rocks in a very Evil Dead kind of way. And we're finally getting a sequel!

Bite-Sized Review: A surprisingly pro-sex worker narrative, punctuated by some of the best accents you'll hear in cinema.

I guess I can do an update before it gets too long.

13. Damsel (2024)

Needed something a bit lighter that night, so I did Damsel. A fantasy movie that uses a lot of horror stuff in it. Even get a final girl tour.

14. The Invitation (2023)

A somewhat fun recreation of the Dracula tale. Even if they avoid saying that name for whatever reason, even though they use other names from the novel. Could have used some more time with the other brides, though.

15. Kpop Demon Hunters (2025)

Yeah, I had been watching the live version of Golden a lot, so I needed a rewatch.

16. Companion (2025)

Love this movie. The leads are great. Even if the marketing spoiled the twist, it is still good to go back after seeing the full movie to get more details in the beginning of the movie. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid are both a delight. Do hate this movie for forcing Boimler's o-face into my memory.

17. Underworld (2003)

Time for one of my fun franchise rewatches during this time. The OG, though I'm sad I don't have the theatrical cut. The unrated extended cut just kills the big moment of the reveal of Viktor being awoken 100 years early. But hey, to ruin that fun moment, you get a few seconds of no nipple boob.

18. Underworld: Evolution (2006)

Still fun, even if it lacks some of the supporting pillars of Sheen and Nighy from the first movie. I like how I am able to recognize the Marcus actor even if most of the roles I've seen him in are him covered in makeup.

19. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)

Proof that killing off Bill Nighy and Martin Sheen's characters in the first movie was a critical misstep, as they just make this about the best movie in the series.

20. Underworld: Awakening (2012)

The Canadian One. Trust me, very noticeable when you leave eastern Europe for Canada, even ignoring some Vancouver regulars that show up.

21. Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

At least they tried to bring back the aesthetic of the original 3 movies. Though, without Patrick Tatapolous, it doesn't get close. But, hey, back to Eastern Europe, yay. Also, stop killing your scene chewing characters... A part of me still would love going back to this world, as long as they get Patrick Tatapolous back in some capacity.

I had no clue they made so many Underworld movies. I just know the first 2 and the prequel.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - WTF even was this movie? I guess multiple people possessed by Jason are better than no Jason at all (looking at you, Part V). Not much to say here. Meh. Not even that Duke guy could save it. Gotta wonder if those opening night crowds went crazy for the Freddy claw grabbing the hockey mask at the end back in 1993.

Jason X - No, I stand corrected. WTF was THIS movie? It was like the early 2000's threw up in space for the backdrop of a Friday the 13th movie. All that was missing was a Nickelback soundtrack. I'd throw in the towel too after this one (not counting FvJ or the remake).

Night 43

106. El espiritu de la colemena (1973) dir. Victor Erice (NEW)

0a73e6aaef1dd374cf731e0c9c2b45a5ab02f901.gifv

Bite-Sized Review: Not really a horror flick but features Frankenstein heavily and a big influence on the two following flicks. Lived up to the hype. Children are the gateway to wonder and truth.

107. El espinazo del diablo (2001) dir. Guillermo del Toro
e36c5b688ea60030b384f755f982e75b0d72823d.gifv

Bite-Sized Review: A film that kicks your butt until it throws you a (back)bone.

108. El laberinto del fauno (2006) dir. Guillermo del Toro

Bite-Sized Review: And it is said that the Princess returned to her father's kingdom. That she reigned there with justice and a kind heart for many centuries. That she was loved by her people. And that she left behind small traces of her time on Earth, visible only to those who know where to look.

I was curious about the early work of the director of The Man with the Black Umbrella and it somehow sent me down this rabbit hole of found footage films that I didn't even know existed until now and to be honest after watching them I kind of understand why.

These films are very amateurish with low film quality and non professional actors and I can only recommend them to the most hardcore/die hard found footage fans.

Anyways, when it comes to this film it was a rough way to start out this trilogy but I liked the retro almost early 2000's feel and it has some decent scares and atmosphere.

An improvement on the first film but I wouldn't call it anything great. There's some nice camera tricks and clever camera work when it comes to the scares this time and I enjoyed the haunted house set piece at the end eventhough it's pretty much a rehash of the finale of the first film.

the-fear-footage-2-3-v0-pm6q2sx6e0lf1.jpg

The final film in this so called trilogy and unfortunately by far the worst film of the three on pretty much every level. The lead actor in this is easily the weakest out of all the actors in this franchise and I know none of them are professional actors but man this was rough. The scares are pretty lame too and if your expecting any kind of satisfying answers or an explanation for anything that happened in these movies than your definitely going to be disappointed with this one.

I wasn't going to bother with this one at first but I was curious since this seemed to be getting pretty decent reviews and overall it was definitely a step up from The Fear Footage 3 and between this and The Man with the Black Umbrella I can see some progression with this director but I really hope one of these days he is able to actually get decent actors in his movies.

I would also like to see what this guy can do with a real budget since apparently all these movies cost like $700-$800 dollars to make which is impressive but it definitely hurts the overall quality of his films.

October 9th:
Unforgettable (2017)

unforgettable-xlg.jpg

Rosario Dawson, Katherine Heigl, and some guy star in Unforgettable, a forgettable Lifetime-esque domestic thriller. There's nothing particularly special about it, but Heigl is very entertaining as the perfectionistic antagonist who wants her ex-husband back at any cost. She menacingly polishes her silverware, rides a horse, and pilfers jewelry giallo-style, but overall, this should've been ten times crazier.

October 10th:
The Conference (2023)
Longlegs (2024)

konferensen-935767501-large.jpg

An unholy mix of Nordic team-building retreat and Friday the 13th. It works though, with its satirical corporate-culture tone and some surprisingly wild kills. The plot is simple (early on, there's only one option for the killer's identity), and the film is a bit overlong, but there's enough spice in the direction and editing to keep things engaging.

There truly is nothing scarier than endless team-building exercises.

longlegs-ver4-xlg.jpg

Longlegs is characterized by fantastic leading performances from Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage and Osgood Perkins's spine-chilling direction. It's a deeply atmospheric film with a haunting mystery at its core — but much like this year's Weapons, the journey is far more satisfying than the conclusion.

Longlegs overexplains itself in places where a little enigma would've served it better. Still, this is a cool, special film — Cage alone is unforgettable as the titular botched, wickedly evil doll-making chanteur.

Night 44

109. Blade II (2002) dir. Guillermo del Toro

Bite-Sized Review: 20 mins too long, but boy does it kick a lot of ass.

110. Hellboy (2004) dir. Guillermo del Toro
79936ef3c71ea09d46df3df865c86ad368749154.gifv

Bite-Sized Review: The first Hellboy emphasizes the issues of GDT's early English work, perhaps better then any other. There is a lot here to like. But it's dragged down by scenes that refuse to end.

111. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) dir. Guillermo del Toro
acc6f1826450ba0fd99a05b1d04a6c102f3f6144.gifv

Bite-Sized Review: Here we frickin' go. This is where GDT truly found his voice in English. Leaner, meaner, and so much cooler. No longer self-conscious, trying to explain every last beat. It's a film that trust it's audience and it rocks so hard because of it. Luke Gross for the Mt. Rushmore of comic book movie villains.
