avi, for forcing venom down sam's throat when the quality of the first two movies was fantastic.

Executive Meddling - Television Tropes & Idioms

  • Spider-Man 3: Sam Raimi wanted to do a movie focusing on a hero with negative qualities and a villain with positive qualities, while wrapping up sub-plots involving Mary Jane and Harry "Goblin Jr." Osborne. The story was packed as it was, but producer Avi Arad insisted that fan-favorite Venom also be added into the film. Sam Raimi, who disliked the character, at first refused but eventually gave in and shoehorned Eddie Brock and Venom into the script. The result? Three villains, a cluttered story, and many unhappy fans. If you look closely, there's still parts where the story seems to make no sense at all unless you pretend Venom's not in it.
    • One has to consider, though that even if Venom hadn't been put in, the Vulture was going to serve Venom's role anyway. Therefore, Spider-Man 3 may have just simply been doomed anyway.
      • And without Venom, it would still have been left with one villain who was an amnesiac for most of the movie and one who was made so sympathetic it's like they weren't trying to make him threatening.
    • Now, things are even worse: Raimi was not satisfied with the scripts offered, production had to start soon... and since Sony wanted a new Spider-Man no matter what, Raimi and Tobey Maguire were left behind and a Continuity Reboot is on the way.

Rothman the guy seems to care very little about the quality of his movies and is out to make a quick buck from rush job short, running time cheap movies.

Thank you Iron Stark. Lucifer, Satan... take your pick... we're in trouble either way

Blight616, I think Avi Arad still serves in some sort of producing capacity for all the movies he helped set up.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0032696/

He's credited as producer or executive producer on Iron Man and TIH and the other ones that are coming up.

He now has his own production company though even though he's no longer at Marvel.

Avi has done far more good than bad. He was one of the people that saved Marvel in the 90s, made Toybiz what it was, helped make the deals for all the Marvel movies, shows, other products. Sure as a producer he has pushed for certain things(Like Venom) but he was doing his job and what he thought was best at the time.

Rothman while making hits for FOX like Alvin and the Chipmucks mostly made terrible decisions.

I don't think people have a clue about how important Avi was to saving Marvel as a company. ANYTHING you enjoy today that Marvel produces means you have that man to thank. He may have been over his head as a producer but he earned to right to flub up at times. Don't believe me, read this book...

Ike Perlmutter was the business brains but it was Avi Arad who had the heart and conviction to get Ike revved up and see it through. Seriously, Marvel might be dead today without these men. I think fanboys should know this and show a little more respect. As for Rothman, blast away.

Lol, it's starting to look like DC/Warner can't make anything that's not Nolan or a cartoon.

Word is out Loser's and Jonah Hex are bad. What in the world is up there?

Uhh, yeah right topdog1. You believe everything you read? I got a bridge to sell you! Avi has far out done any good. That's why he got CANNED!

I said he was clearly over his head as a producer but no one can deny the facts of his role in Marvel as they restructured from bankruptcy. THAT'S why I cut the guy some slack. Read the book and see why. BTW- officially he never got canned.

Also, where is this bridge and how much do you want for it? I love water property!

They let him walk, but he had little to no choice. You are right he was instramental early. It's when he took the X-Men movies too serious and messed with cannon on other projects Hulk, Elecktra, FF, FF2 (Ghost Rider?) that he sealed his doom. He ruined Spider-Man 3 and killed 4

I'll agree with you on late 90's to 1st Spider-Man, remember Bratz?

here's the way I see it :

everything good at movie-marvel, avi arad has let happen.

everything bad at movie-marvel, avi arad has let happen. almost everything bad for movie-marvel at fox, Rothman let hapen.

they both suck

Avi I heard meddled around with TASM, In my opinion I felt that Marc webb should have had full creative control on the flick.

Producers/executives came in after test screenigs scored really low. Elements were reshot and edited, that's the extent.

Avi was very good at one point. I think he came to the point where he was really unqualified to be doing what he was doing. The guy was the CEO of a toy company, he had zero experience as a Hollywood producer. But he was able to capture lightning in a bottle with some of Marvel's early film efforts.

Tom Rothman is just a dick. There's absolutely nothing positive I can say about him. Not one thing.

Although I dislike some of the things that Arad did, specifically his meddling of SM3 that subsequently contributed to that movie's downfall, he was instrumental in saving Marvel during the dark times and help saved the company, so I can forgive some of the things he did. I'm just glad that Kevin Feige, and not Avi Arad, is heading the Marvel Studios right now.

As for Rothman, I think the day he stepped down from his position as head of the Fox movie division was the beginning of their recent turnaround. There's nothing to say about this man.

Avi Arad did meddle with Spider-Man 3 (though I feel people give that film far more crap than it deserves), but he also part of the reason why there was a Spider-Man 3 at all. Or a Spider-Man 1! I can't hate the guy who helped push a Blade film and start the comic book rush at all, a guy who effectively saved Marvel. Yes, he's an idiot, but he's a necessary evil.

Rothman insulted my intelligence with everything he influenced. Sure, some of the earlier Fox films were good. X-Men and X2 are amazing films (not sure how much influence he had on those), and Daredevil was alright. Still...X-Men 3? FF? Electra? They feel like films made by a man who thought his audience was too stupid and vapid to appreciate high concepts. I felt insulted just watching them, or even thinking about them.

I think we can agree, though, that Kevin Feige is better than both of 'em.

Jon Peters vs Rick McCallum - Who's Worse

Arad is an idiot who does not know any better, Rothman is an ass who does not care...

Other than mucking up Spider-Man 3 and having generally "wtf-are-you-talking-about" quotes in his interviews, I don't know what's so bad about Arad that could possibly match him up to Tom Rothman.

I remember Rothman (or maybe it was someone else at FOX) basically said in an interview after the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes that they were just figuring out that it takes a good script to make a good movie. Anyone have that quote handy? I couldn't find it just now.

So yeah, I guess I'll say Rothman is worse.

A Look Back in Time with JJ Abrams at "Superman Flyby"
Steve Younis said:
MediaGeekNetwork.com has republished an interview conducted with JJ Abrams back in 2002 when he was in the process of completing his screenplay for the never-made Superman film known as "Superman Flyby". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

MEDIA GEEK NETWORK: From what I've gathered from people I've spoken to in the past, producer Jon Peters isn't much of a fan of the Superman costume or the image of Superman flying. This, of course, begs the question: why bother making a Superman movie?

ABRAMS: It's safe to say that if Superman doesn't fly, it would be a disappointment. I do think that we're approaching this in a very fresh way, but there are certain things that people have come to realize are important. You have to have the costume and you want to do a Superman movie that will be so satisfying. I'm so sick of going to big blockbuster movies and leaving feeling like I died a little bit, like, "Oh my God, how disappointing was that?" What's so exciting for us is that we're approaching this thing knowing and feeling the kind of movie that as kids we used to see. I feel that we're going to try as hard as we can to make this a satisfying experience.
It's interesting to read this old interview and compare what he said to interviews recently conducted for "Man of Steel". Also interesting is the comparison between the "Flyby" costume design concepts and the one being worn by Henry Cavill.

Read the complete interview at the Media Geek Network website.
