Awards/nominations?

Eh. I think some categories like Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling are most likely right now.

Only because the Oscars are more concerned now with quotas and "diversity" than quality.

If Black Panther remains one of the best reviewed films of the year and Oscar voters...you know actually really like it as well. I'm not sure its about diversity and quotas.

I can see BP getting it for production categories, but the film, though excellent, is still too "comic-booky" to be Oscar worthy.

I can see it at least getting nominations for costume design and original score, but I don't think it'll get much Oscar-type recognition outside of that. I'd like to be proven wrong though for the latter statement.

For some reason, I think it will. I mean get out and The shape of water had big Oscar pushes... and the shape of water won!! I think those two movies alone open the door for a bid by Black Panther... I mean it’s original and just an overall great movie. While I liked the Shape of Water ... Black Panther is the better movie imo. This is the dark knight, this is Superman 1. It crosses barriers and Deserves the hype it gets.

But we will have to see.

This will definitely get technical and costume design, and maybe even music. Best Picture though I doubt it.

Despite it's cultural significance outside of the theater, this film didn't challenge a conventional belief or push a boundary in it's statements, and acting requirements. The academy tends to favor those movies over action films. Unless they're prepared to acknowledge this film for the relevance it had beyond the story told on screen, I wouldn't look for it to be nominated let alone win one of their top awards. At the end of the day the story was about finding your place while dealing with sins of the past. Something that's been seen before.

While this will be one the most widely seen films, it won't really align with their taste. A taste that is ever diverging from the general public, and has more than likely contributed to the TV ratings decline.

Bumping this thread

Seems like Black Panther is indeed on a collision course to get a best pic nod at the Oscars. I've been following its awards and its been racking up quite a few. It just got 3 Golden Globe noms, SAG ensemble, and a bunch of critics awards.

On the other hand, this year there aren’t that many stand outs. Roma is greatly loved by critics, but no foreign language film has ever won best picture, especially in a year where Oscar is being criticized for being out of touch (a film that not many have seen on a subject that not that many care in black and white. And in Spanish to boot.)

A Star is Born is the heavy favorite now though it’s not that strong in the acting department for the female lead and it’s a directorial debut. Bohemian Rhasody is strong in the lead but not that much loved in the storytelling aspect. Beale Street is well liked but it hasn’t gathered much buzz yet. That opens a small crack for a dark horse that may not be a great cinematic achievement but has vast cultural impact that is pretty acclaimed by critics and popular in BO. I won’t be surprised if some voters will take that into consideration in a year like this to give it small fighting chance. It really depends on how many other awards it will get before Oscar for a push. If A Star is Born racks up many awards before Oscar, the race is pretty much over.

If this doesn’t get even a nom this is a true snub given how many noms it has gotten from other major awards.

Lady Gaga has a lot of buzz for a Best Actress nomination. Possibly as a winner. Sooooooo, I have no idea what you mean here.

She is the weakest link in the movie. She can buzz whatever she wants she has no chance.

Right now, most lists has her as the favorite to win the award at this time. That's hardly having no chance.

Oh well really. She has the buzz but she has the downsize of being seen as not really acting only playing herself. The other actors have better shot. That’s what I’ve read in some recent pundits. Anyway it’s way OT I can’t care less about best actress or that movie.

I need to know how to netvigate delete, post and edit.

I would advise you how to do it, but I am a mod so how everything looks to me may be different. But you should have either a delete button or a check box that gives you a delete option. There will definitely be an edit button.

Clumsy fingers on a small phone screen..... made mistakes often...

I'd like the likes of The Favourite or Vice or Green Book rather than A Star is Born. It's a solid film but it's so insanely over-hyped.

I don't get the love for Bohemian Rhapsody at all. It was all about the lead actor's performance. Plus, I imagine no 1 wants to see the director on stage considering all the controversy of last year.

Also feel that if Star does pick up multiple Oscars for acting then it might actually open up Best Pic for another. Voters might want to award someone else for pic and director after checking the acting boxes for Star esp if they don’t think it’s such a great film to have a sweep in major cats. It isn’t unheard of. The beneficiary might not be Panther but now it’s one of the films with some buzzes to it. We will see which other film will emerge as a clear alternative in the other awards go into Oscar.

I posted this in the news thread, but it belongs here, as well.

Producers Guild To Honor Kevin Feige with 2019 David O. Selznick Achievement Award

LOS ANGELES (August 30, 2017) – The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today that Kevin Feige will be honored with the 2019 David O. Selznick Achievement Award recognizing the producer’s body of work in motion pictures. Feige will receive the award at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

As President of Marvel Studios since 2007 and producer of each of its 20 genre-spanning films to date, Feige is widely credited with creating the unprecedented and ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. His forward-thinking approach to production, diverse casting and globally resonant storylines make him one of the most exciting and relevant filmmakers of our time.

Since the inception of Marvel Studios, Feige has continually brought together a diverse group of talent for each of his films, seeking out unique and unexpected voices to bring the studio’s stories to life, from writers and directors to actors and below-the-line professionals. This effort reached its apex with this year’s release of the critically acclaimed “Black Panther.” The film became a global cultural phemomeon, proving that showcasing diverse voices can lead to global success. The most successful domestic release of 2018, “Black Panther” earned more than $1.3B worldwide.

So are people surprised Black Panther didn't pick up any awards? Thought it was a shoe in for something with all the buzz round the film.

Take it this will severely dent their Oscar chances now?

Not surprised at all for me. It’s always been a dark horse than frontrunner in many categories (even for best song). The surprise was more about Bohemian Rhapsody picking up the best pic. That could make Oscar interesting though there is virtually no chance for Black Panther other than some second tier categories like design, if it really picks up any. That said, it is already a win should it get a nom for best pic.

So seems, according to Borys Kit, it got a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay by the WGA, against BlackKklansman, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born.

I still need to see BlackKklansman.

I'm surprised it didn't get a Best director nod.

I'm flabbergasted that Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Picture and Rami Malek won Best Actor.
