What's going on with Bane? I noticed him on the covers of Checkmate and some others.

He's joining the Suicide Squad, based on those covers, that is.

Bane after the Battle of Metropolis where he killed Judomaster went back home to Santa Prisca, defeated the drug-lords who were running it and placing it under Martial Law - trying to lead to Democratic Elections - which were actually rigged by Checkmate for him to win.

Something like that. Thomas Jagger wants to kick his ass anyway.

Tommy Jagger already kicked his ass. Refrained from killing him as I recall.

Oh yeah, I'm sure he'd jump at doing it again though.

He only refrained from killing Bane because he was under specific orders not to do so, as it would ruin the mission. If they ever had a rematch when they were free to do as they pleased in the fight, though...

Well that cleared some up, I have some old issues of the original Suicide Squad, what's the deal behind this? Reformed criminals?

Not necessarily reformed. Criminals working for the government to get a reduced sentence (and often just plain commuted). Of course, the team isn't the Suicide Squad for nothing. Odds of 50% at least somebody will die on any given mission.

Why is Bronze Tiger still hanging with them? I thought he didn't much like Waller and he's certainly not a hardened criminal working off any sentence.

To keep the others in line as has always been his role in the group.

Yep. And as far as I recall, that's pretty much what he said to Waller in that Suicide Squad arc in the early Checkmate issues. He's doing it because the Suicide Squad does do some good, and because he doesn't want to leave Flag behind again.

Ah, okay. That makes sense, then. I wish Vixen could hop back onto the Suicide Squad. She seems a much better fit there than with the JLA.

Although I agree that she fits better with the Squad than the League, I don't think she fits that well in the Squad any more either. Birds of Prey probably would've been the best place for her.

The idea behind the Squad sounds rahter good, I just hope that this wil be a gritty book. Though I doubt it.

The BoP would be a good place, but I don't read that anymore. :o

Why? The book has been one of the most consistently solid titles since its inception.

Obscurity or death would've been the best place for her. I still don't understand why she got to survive the destruction of the Detroit League. All of the others were more interesting.

Why wouldn't it be? How else could you possibly do a Suicide Squad book?

Simone's humor started bugging me, I hated Sin, and somewhere along the way it became more a book about Huntress and the new Birds rather than Black Canary and Oracle, and the latter dynamic is what I enjoyed most about the series. Oh, and Misfit made me want to tear my hair out. She was one of the biggest reasons I quit reading, along with the fact that it never hurts for me to lose a comic from my ridiculously large pull list.

Same here, which is why I used past tense for the BoP reference.

As for the 'grittiness' of the Suicide Squad book. The first volume had death wishes, manic depression, members going rogue, members leaving in disgust and just plain lots of death. It also had the original Captain Boomerang, which really says it all.

All Ostrander.

All awesome.

I quite agree. That's why I have a hard time imagining how anyone could do a Suicide Squad book that wasn't gritty. I mean, what other possible direction could you take it in?

I'm pretty sure DeMatteis ****ed up the concept for volume 2, but I haven't actually read much of it. Certainly didn't seem to carry that vibe that Ostrander's carried.

And Ostrander is one of my favourite comic writers. His Suicide Squad and Spectre runs are just plain amazing. He's done some really brilliant stuff.

There was a Vol. 2? Whoa. I can't believe I didn't know about that. I've read Spanner's Galaxy but not Suicide Squad Vol. 2? Man, what the hell have I been doing?

Agreed. They should get him for a new Squad ongoing.

SS Vol.2 was pretty crappy. You're not missing much.

In regards to Vixen...she has always been a hero first, the only reason she was in the Squad was because of guilt over killing someone. But she kinda didn't work. If someone used her effectively (power-wise) she would be a helluva covert operative. Heck, we see her use a lot of raptor class animals for their ferocity, but most of those creatures are hunters and use STEALTH to get at their prey. As it is, I reiterate that I don't see her as a fitting piece in the Squad anymore.

It's going to be interesting to see Nightshade behave like an operative (and an intelligent person, again) the way she has been portrayed lately. I hope the Slipknot we see in the cover to Checkmate #20 is a new one, 'cuz the old one had only one arm (and might be dead); who would want to follow in the steps of a pretty lame villain?

Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to Nightshade being Nightshade again. It's funny, I originally read the Day of Vengeance mini and loved it. Then I read Suicide Squad, and I've hated Willingham's (?) Nightshade ever since.
