Horror Barbarian | Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, Justin Long

She was in Krypton and did a hell of a great job there. This movie, if I could sum it up in a gif:

This was unsettling and creepy as hell with a great atmosphere and tone throughout. I love the direction, how the camera would linger on objects for awhile, while later rushing towards the character, Sam Raimi-style. I enjoyed how the true nature of this home was slowly revealed and it never came off as cheesy or predictable.

This is me thinking too deeply into things, but when Justin Long showed up, before we got his name, I thought he was going to end up being , because the movie introduced that name early on even though we never see him, so I'm thinking why introduce that element unless it would pay off later? Long's character, with the situation he was going through, reminded me of something that Fred Savage went through and may be still be going through this year.

That said, I do think that when the situation was presented to certain characters outside of the main ones, you would think they'd either ask more questions or take it more seriously. You know the ones I mean if you've seen the film. Honestly, Tess saying "Nope" at a certain point in the movie was the smartest thing she did. If only she had followed through. I did enjoy how the movie ramped up towards the end, even if I do think a few characters should've died once or twice, but overall I dug the hell out of this. I wish it came out during October, but as is, I had a great time.

That line got a good laugh out of the audience, and reminded me of Nope as well (I saw that movie the other day too).

I've seen some reviewers call this movie "unpredictable" and while I guess it was to an extent, it wasn't really that unpredictable. I mean, some of the scares were telegraphed a mile away. I suppose the plot overall was unpredictable though.

Mild spoiler:
Honestly the most unrealistic part of the movie was the fact that anyone would stay in a neighborhood looking that run-down, and driving in at night doesn't make it any less of an excuse (headlights exist for a reason). Anyone with a brain would've left the next morning and wouldn't have come back.

Calling this this years' Malignant is pretty apt. This movie was absolutely wild, and I honestly have not a single clue as to what the hell I just watched. Not sure I want to say I liked it on the whole, but there are a lot of things I liked about it.

Wish I had a less obnoxious crowd to have seen it with. Literally had an officer standing in front of me at one point threatening to kick out a group of girls who were on their phones the whole first half.

Georgia Campbell tho :atp:

This was a wild ride, lived up to it's hype.

That baby bottle and "feeding" scene. :barf:

Loved it, such a fun ride. I found myself cringing in disgust at some points of the movie.

Just came back from this and yeah it was pretty good. 8/10 for me!

Trailer definitely undersold the movie. The directing was pretty good, but for me it kinda fell apart in the writing aspect because it fell trope to characters making either really dumb, or really unrealistic, decisions - I'd say unrealistic decisions moreso. Like in that scene between Tessa and her interviewer post-interview, where the interviewer hinted knowing something about the area where Tessa was staying. In a realistic scenario, Tessa's character would've asked what she knew about it, but she didn't, which didn't make any sense.

There was some obvious switching between timelines that didn't totally make sense either - and by that I mean it didn't explain things that I would've expected to have been explained.

But overall a solid entertaining horror flick. Should've come out in October though. Missed opportunity. Hopefully it has the legs to keep going through October?

I think where the writing hurt the movie was in the latter half.

This movie was phenomenal. Scary, suspenseful and also funny. It gave me a lot of Sam Raimi vibes, I must say. LOVED it! My showing had a really loud teenage crowd and
they screamed at the reveal of the girl killing Skarsgards character. I had a huge grin on my face because I knew I was in for a hell of a ride!

After being let down by both X and Black Phone, this movie managed to exceed my expectations and became one of my favorite horror films of recent years. An easy 9.5/10!

I hope this gets early access. Would love to rent at home

Speaking of Bill Skarsgard, the dude clearly has talent (evident from his IT movies), and I was disappointed this movie didn't really capitalize on that. Would like to see him in more variety of movies that show off his talent.

Also that cut to black part-way through the movie was the BIGGEST tease ever. I still can't get over that. It was both perfectly timed and incredibly annoying at the same time. :hehe:

At the Q&A I saw, Zach Cregger mentioned Sam Raimi as one of his major horror influences.

That's so cool. Theres a lot of camera angles that feel similar too, especially to the first Evil Dead film. This film had the vibe of that first movie a lot at times.

I really liked this movie but was there ever an explanation for why
the “mother” had absurdly superhuman strength? I know they said the thing about the kidnapper guy breeding with his own children but is that it? Inbreeding gives you superpowers?

Looks like this will be on HBO Max Oct 24, just in time for Halloween
