People require a few basic physiological needs in order to survive.

  • We all need to breathe or we'd die.
  • We all need to eat or we'd die
  • We all need to drink water or we'd die
  • We all need to sleep or we'd die
  • We all need to excrete waste or we'd die
  • We all need shelter/clothing/warmth to maintain homeostasis
  • We all need sex... argue all you want, your body is telling you that you need it so you need it
Now, certain enjoyment can be derived from all of these physiological needs but I HATE having to do them to live. I often wonder how nice it would be if I could eliminate one of these needs...

If I didn't have to sleep, I could do so many more things with my life with that newfound time.

If I didn't have to eat or drink, I wouldn't have to piss or **** and I would save an incredible amount of money.

If I didn't have a libido, I'd be on the Hype a lot more.

But going back to certain enjoyments, I would miss dreaming during sleep, I'd miss eating a juicy steak, I'd miss sex. It's a difficult decision to make but one I like to occasionally ponder and bring up in conversation.

If you could eliminate a basic human physiological need... which one would it be and why?

*Disclaimer: This is a HYPOTHETICAL scenario
^I think you missed the part where this is hypothetical. You wouldn't have to hold your breath, your physiology would change so that you no longer need to do it.

I'd eliminate the need to sleep. It's 1/3 of your life that could be spent doing other things.

It'd be great just to not NEED to do any of them, but still be able to do the ones you like when you wanted to.

Like not to have to eat to survive so that if you were trying to cut down and save up for something or spend less money, you didn't have to spend it on food. But still be able to treat yourself to tasty food when you did have the money and the desire.

Or not to have to sleep if you had really important things to do and would really rather just be awake, but be able to decide 'ah, i'm gonna sleep now' and nod off whenever you wanted.

If I had to cut one out completely though, it'd totally be food.

It would be nice... but that's too easy. I akin this to "corrupt a wish" or "what superpower would you like to have" type questions. There are always consequences and repurcussions to our choices/decisions... and the consequence for the hypothetical situation here is that if you choose to eliminate sleep... you CAN'T sleep. It makes the thought put into the decision more... thoughtful.

I wouldn't want to never sleep. I think it'd be really really weird.

I could totally live without eating or drinking or excreting the waste of those things tho.

I would give up eating and drinking and hopefully that would cut out the need to go ot the bathroom. I don't mind sleeping , that's like an escape sometimes.

I have always hovered between getting rid of sleeping or eating. I love eating and trying different kinds of food. A part of my current relationship that I enjoy is that we are both foodies. It's hard finding a person to enjoy new foods as there are so many people who only like what they know and are afraid to try new things. We both love trying new things... that includes food.

That being said... like you, I would eliminate food. The cost savings are too high to ignore and time spent in the bathroom to excrete food/drink waste is almost like a 2 for 1 for me.

I don't mind an itch as long as it feels good to scratch that itch.

The problem is once the scratching starts to feel good it becomes a moral or physical problem.

What kind of sick joke it that?.

I would like to get rid of sleep and have more time of my day to do the things I want or need, although it is nice just to lay down on a comfortable bed sometimes.

Nope.
It's possible to suppress sexual desire with discipline....and some people are sexless.

It's possible for some Buddhist monks to slow their heart rates to around 8 beats per minute... doesn't mean that's a normal human function. There have been legends about people being hit in their brains with shrapnel and it affecting their brain in a way that they can't fall asleep anymore... doesn't mean it's normal. It is a normal human function to feel the need for sex. If someone trains themselves to suppress that need, more power to them, but a need for sex is not something that a human being chooses to feel... it's something that they feel the need for.

Are you really talking about *********ing?

Just about all the seven deadly sins are based on a psychological or physical need that eventually becomes destructive once it is enjoyed.

Basic sex drive becomes lust.

The need for nutrition becomes gluttony.

The need for rest become sloth.

The need for survival becomes greed.

The need for self-esteem becomes pride and envy.

The need for security becomes wrath.

Why do needs start becoming spiritually and physically destructive once we start to enjoy fulfilling them??? Seems like one big cosmic joke.

I guess these things are only good in moderation. Makes alot of sense.

Whoa, whoa, whoa cowboy... control is the key to everything. Control yourself and quit projecting.

psycho

I usually never remember my dreams, so I would go without sleep.

I'm not projecting.

Those sins/problems are everywhere and they start with our basic needs.

i would want to choose sleep but would that mean we could never rest. being forever unable to rest, i don't think i could do without losing sanity

That's what I was thinking. Like if we could get rid of sleep would that mean we wouldn't get tired anymore, or if we didn't need food would we no longer get hungry?

If I could choose one, it'd be eating, because being a broke ass with no job right now, food budgets add up fast.

But it'd have to come with the asterisk that I still can eat if I choose to.

I can't willingly eliminate anything.

*I can't not breathe.
*Food is too damn tasty to give up.
*My pee must look normal or I freak out so I gotta keep water.
*Regardless if I run on 3 hours of sleep these days, I need those 3 hours. Or I'll start to kill.
*Toxins need to exit, can't tell my body to stop.
*I've become accustomed to jeans and air conditioning, ain't gonna give them up.
*If more people got laid (in the consensual way), the world would be a lot less bat****. Wars and crankyness would be at a minimum, etc. It's a tremendous stress reliever. Sex isn't evil. gtfo, nutjobs. Have some sex for the good of mankind. (and wrap it up)

I love the sense of taste but hunger and having to go are among the worst feelings.
