Rumor has it Nolan’s third Batfilm will be shot fully in IMAX.

From Aintitcool:

"New Nolan third installment of his Batman Saga rumor...
Hey folks, Harry here at 30,000 feet flying from Chicago to Austin! Love Wifi on planes! Now you may have noticed the DVD COLUMN is not up today. I've been doing extensive travel recently - and just haven't had the time to write it, but when I get home I'm going to start cracking at it.
Though none of that is why you clicked on this story. When I realized that I could write and post a story from the sky - I knew that this story that I kinda stumbled into on this bout of travel... well, it's the sort of thing that is so potentially cool - if it happens. I have to say upfront that the nature of this story is a rumor, not because I don't have solid sources, I do... but because it could simply NOT WORK OUT. That happens sometimes. It is something that the production team are "considering" - but it is an extremely costly process, but one that I believe we would all love to see happen.

The THIRD chapter of Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader's saga could very well be FULLY shot in IMAX, not IMAX Digital - but the beautiful, stunning IMAX that we saw pieces of THE DARK KNIGHT in.

Now this is something that I'm sure a lot of you will feel is a no-brainer. Nolan blew us away with the IMAX sequences in that film - but it was a very tough process to work in. Mainly due to the limitations of how many available real IMAX rigs there are. Not only that, but lenses had to be created, adapted and god forbid one broke down. Part of the reason that Nolan went forward with INCEPTION first - besides taking a creative break from the cape and cowl adventures... was possibly to create a few new IMAX cameras made to his specs. Once again - the cost of shooting an entire feature film on IMAX... the stock, the time it takes to reset, to load, to move the cameras... Well... it is daunting, but as Nolan proved with DARK KNIGHT - the difference is stunning.

I'm going to continue to pursue this story further - to try to get some official comments, but as I was flying out of Chicago... and I was looking down at part of Nolan's Gotham... it just felt like the perfect story to post from my first flying Wifi adventure! So what do you think? Should Nolan shoot the entire next film that way?"

I don't see why not (aside from cost), if all the right lenses and stuff are now available and he can them into the tight spaces. I was actually surprised just how much of TDK was shot in IMAX. I wonder if the whole film will be in the taller 16x9 format if he does.

As I said in another thread, does Harry have a source, or was this a good idea that came to his mind as he flew over Chicago?

That's what I was wondering. I don't doubt Nolan would want to film the entire thing in IMAX, it seems like the logical next step. I just don't trust the source. AICN hasn't exactly been a reliable source for Batman news. And in this case the author doesn't even claim to have a real source for this information, it just sounds like a thought he had or a rumor he heard. So what's the big deal?

BREAKING NEWS: NEXT BATMAN FILM LIKELY TO BE SET IN GOTHAM CITY.

Interesting concept. Doesn't seem like a very practical way to shoot a huge scale film like BB3 would be, unless there have been some advances in the IMAX technology. I'll only comment on the concept and not the story because (like you all said before) it would be nice to have a source before I take this as fact. Here's hoping some official news comes soon..

i thought about this months ago...

nevertheless, i think it would be dope. however, the only downside to IMAX is transferring it to blu-ray. the quality is great but, just like full screen movies crop off the sides of the images, the widescreen cuts off the top and bottom of the IMAX aspect.
the IMAX scenes on the TDK BD are awesome, though; i'm just kinda bugged by not having the whole picture.

So, where was I when Nolan annouced he was returning????

Batman 3 in Imax would be freaking awesome. I'd drive for 3 hours just to see it.

A potential problem would be that if the whole movie was in IMAX, it may mean there would be no flash backs of Two-Face. Nolan said in his TDK chat that rendering the CGI needed for Aaron would look bad on the IMAX resolution

I'm not buying it. It seems hellaciously expensive and time-consuming; more of an effort than it's worth.

i hope its true, it will look good on my tv when it comes out on bluray

Maybe he's spearheading some advancements to make such an idea more feasible budget wise. Ya gotta expect him to at least use it somewhat if he comes back.

Save the IMAX format for a film with some real action that can showcase it to the fullest potential.

I say let him do what he wants.

If this pans out to be true, it would be absolutely breath-taking. And for those claiming that it'll be too costly...did you see how much money The Dark Knight made? They'll throw all kind of cash at the movie, and it will make back it's budget.

Would he really just post some stray thought that happened to pop in his head? The first paragraph is so confusingly written that it's hard to make out what he's trying to say, but it sounds like he claims the production team in "considering" the IMAX full movie format, so he must have a source.

Let them worry about the costs. Ih he feels he can film the whole thing in IMAX without compromising anything creatively, then go for it.

I like the idea....... but here is my gripes.

I love IMAX scenes in TDK, but I LOVE THEM EVEN MORE on my 42" HDTV, because it fills up the whole screen, and there is this clarity that is more than the Bluray clarity.

Now, I don't know about watching the whole movie in IMAX because when the IMAX is filled up, and it's hard to see EVERYTHING.

Plus, if you're really seeing full IMAX in an IMAX theater....you're pretty close to it and it can get a bit straining when it comes to fast cuts of a lot of movement/action....and for closeups, you have a 55-foot head right in front of you. But the quality of the image it can capture is quite excellent. So that alone makes it attractive. Don't know how they'd work around only having a few minutes of negative in the magazines, though.

IF Nolan and WB's can get customized IMAX cameras where it will be easier to shoot, than the next Batman film would be a revolutionary breakthrough as was TDK with the limited use of IMAX cameras for specific scenes.

I'm hoping it can be done and I would hope WB's, Nolan and the rest of the production go for it!

Make it so baby! :brucebat:

I'm assuming your TV has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 (16:9); IMAX has a native aspect ratio of 1.43:1. They cropped the original IMAX footage on the Blu-ray to fit most HDTV'S. The Blu-ray should have been the IMAX footage converted to 2.39:1 used for the 35mm theatrical exhibition for consistency. We're actually losing parts of the image either way. Windowboxing it could have been a better way to preserve the original aspect ratio as well.

TDK was an event in IMAX! I made the special effort to go and paid extra money several times at science museums around my area just to see those beautiful scenes and amazing sound!

If they can do an entire sequel in IMAX that would be mind-blowing! If not, I'm just hoping for more scenes in IMAX with 3atman...

I think it is true and they will do it. It's been 3 years since they filmed TDK. Since during the film and after, the crew has been working on the camera to be more versatile. TDK was a like a massive advertisement for IMAX. I'm sure the TDK sequel isn't the only film with plans to use the camera and that IMAX has been developing upgrades and improvements since TDK.
