Batman: Arkham Knight

A game with a kinda sucky story is damn near pointless to me. I would describe City's story as ungainly and undercooked.

It's basically chase the cure. The actual main plot of hunting down that cure has nothing to do with the unique setting of Arkham City. It could just have easily been done in regular Gotham. Protocol 10 is an after thought.

Finally started playing this. Looks damn glorious with all the Nvidia-exclusive effects enabled. :hmr:

Great gameplay can outweigh a bad story by a significant margin, which City had. A lot of games have lackluster stories, but if they're fun to play you can still get enjoyment out of it.

Not for me. I didn't mind City's story, so I made it through, but I don't care how great the gameplay is -if the story is garbage, I'll never see those credits roll. On the opposite end of that, I'll happily play through hinky gameplay if the story is good and I care about the characters.

Of course there are exceptions to both rules, but generally speaking I do need to be invested beyond whatever cool mechanics a game has.

I guess it depends on what you're playing the game for. There are a lot of different kinds of games out there.

^That.

I get a good experience out of games with good stories, but I'm done with them as soon as the credits roll. Why go back if I'm there for the story and now I know all of it?
Great and fun gameplay is certainly what will keep me coming back to whatever kind of game it is.

I only replay games if I enjoy the story and want to revisit it. I tend to treat games like movies and books. Just another medium for telling a story. Without a story a game is little more than a toy to me.

Fighting, Sports and Open World games after finishing story campaigns probably isn't your thing huh?

Fighting and sports and racing games havent interested me since I was a kid. I like open worldgames tho. The side quests usually have enough to keep me interested after the main story is completed (especially in a game as good as witcher) and I enjoy character progression and collecting things and exploration. But I dont bother with trying platinum games and do all the nitty gritty extraneous BS that games have. Like challenge maps type stuff and things like shooting a certain amount of guys with a certain weapon to earn a certain trophy... that type of stuff is not my sort of thing most of the time.

I tend to view video games in two ways; mindless time wasters I can play while listening to or half-watching videos on YouTube, or story-heavy works of art that I play without distractions multiple times. The Arkham games I own and have played more than once are the latter, and the reason I own an Xbox 360 in the first place. I wouldn't have it if I didn't want to own "the movie" and play it at the same time; to me, a great story merges with great gameplay to make an great experience better than either a regular game or a movie by itself. And since they cost more than movies, that's really my only reason for buying expensive ones specifically searching for them; it's why I own Battlefield: Bad Company 2 instead of any CoD, MoH, or other Battlefield games.

And to be honest, Arkham Knight's story is just enough of a letdown compared to Origins and City that I feel fine waiting for Xbox 1 costs to drop quite a ways before I'll try to own a unit and a copy.

My buddy and I are trying to get a podcast going. Our second episode is going to be on the Batman: Arkham series. Now, I've played 4/5 games (including Blackgate), while he's played 5/5. So when we discuss which games we like better, I'm going to be focusing on story alone when it comes to Knight. Now, me and my buddy have broadly similar tastes, but especially in regards to the Arkham story; we both think Origins has the best story of the series, and neither of us are impressed by Knight's. So, since we need some debate between us, and since I know that's not a solid concensus from everyone, I'd like to know your opinions.

I've rewatched AK's story, and I just can't see where the argument for a better story comes from. I can see an argument for some scenes and elements being great; Joker's final nightmare appearance, the way Noble's Scarecrow is performed, etc. But the overall story structure is really boring and kind of disappointing to me; the main through line of the story avoids most of the Rogues Gallery, the AK Militia are kind of bland for mooks in terms of design and characterization, the overall focus on technical issues instead of on character interactions in comparison to the other games, a more static Batman portrayal and just some bad storytelling. AO follows AC's steps by having henchmen characterized by their bosses' infighting, trumps the Jason Todd reveal by incorporating detective scenes into unmasking the Joker, manages to perfectly set-up multiple villains in the main story and juggle Bane and Joker as Big Bads, and gives all the characters a character arc, and all with the goal basically being "the night Batman became a legend."

So, please, tell me your opinions, and if you don't mind, answer these two queries: was Joker actually obtrusive in either game and why? And which game do you think did a better job with Batman's arc?

Right I completely forgot about the rumors.

so this was just put and I found weirdly interesting and no sorry it's nothing on the up coming game that may or may not star Damien

Developer gets Batman: Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3 running on Nintendo Switch Today at 3:00 pm

Impressive.

People have been begging for a lot of their favorite games to come to the Nintendo Switch. Who doesn't want to bring great games like The Witcher 3 with them whereever they go? While we will be getting ports of games like Skyrim, it seems like some developers are less keen on investing in the platform. Some say they simply don't want to get burnt by a console that doesn't sell many units and others have just said it's an underpowered system.
This has lead to some confusion on what can and can't come to Switch due to simply hardware restrictions but there's one team out there trying to get a bunch of games running on the console. Andrew Sampson with the Rainway App team tweeted out several videos today showing games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Nier: Automata running on the Nintendo Switch.

Rainway is an app that allows users to stream their PC games to any device they've got. While the videos do show the games running at a laggy frame-rate, Sampson said that it's a work in progress and they're ironing out the issues. It's not a hardware issue.
Well I can say for certain its not the techs fault. I'll improve it throughout the day. https://t.co/OrgknfFy6c

There's no word as to when the Rainway app will make its way to Nintendo Switch (if Nintendo even allows it) so stay tuned to GameZone for more info.

So, I'm currently replaying Arkham City for the umpteenth time.
I don't know if it's just the nostalgia setting in, but that game is just an absolute gem. Sure, the story has its flaws, but the overall game is just stunning.

Also, to date, Arkham City has the best challenge maps out of all the Arkham games,
with Arkham Origins being a very close second. That's something they really dropped
the ball on in Arkham Knight. Aside from the predator challenge room for Catwoman
in the DLC, the challenge maps are largely uninspired and, ultimately, uninteresting... not to mention completely forgettable.

Anyway, I'm ready for a new Arkham game.
I don't want it to be about Damien Wayne, though.
They need to either make a sequel to Origins or have a
sequel to Arkham Knight and go the route of Batman Beyond.

Unpopular opinion and highly unlikely to ever happen but Id be down for a Birds of Prey spinoff with Batgirl, Huntress and Black Canary as rotating playables

They could set it up like GTA V where you can change between any of them on the fly while having character specific missions as well. They could better incorporate Dual Play if the game is built around a team mechanic. They could even do some co-op specific challenges for extra replay

So it's basically what agents of mayhem doing. GTA sorta started it yeah. But same deal.

Okay, finished that last Riddler race challenge and it was quite annoying especially in the third lap going up that ramp with the walls. I don't play racing games at all so I'm horrible at these race challenges. Almost wanted to grab my X1/PS4 controller to finish the challenge but then I went into first-person view and the race was definitely much more manageable.

I wonder if they can do future games as Uncharted style platformers?

Is that an unpopular opionion?

I would absolutely love it.

I really would prefer they go that route.
I think that could be an even more immersive game than
the past Arkham titles. It would allow more areas to explore,
even if you sacrifice an overall open-world element... which I'm okay with.

Plus it doesn't condense 30 hours worth of events into a 12 hour night that way.

Yeah, that's one thing they absolutely need to get away from.
It made sense in Arkham Asylum and Arkham Origins, to an extent...
But, in Arkham City and Arkham Knight... there's absolutely no way!

Also, that would allow for more dynamic game-play.

sorry nothing new on the up coming game yet.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate was first released in 2013 on the 3DS and Vita, and has since found its way to other systems. Is it worth playing?
