Is Kevin Smith's "The Widening Gyre" canon? If so, then Batman apparently peed himself during Frank Miller's "Year One" tale.

I don't mind this, per se, because Batman is "just a man." It seems legitimate that he could scare himself or be so scared that he'd pee himself. But it seems out of character for him to confess this to someone -- anyone, really.

After "Cacophony," and now this, I think Smith really just needs to stay away from Batman.

Kevin Smith's Batman is his own thing, much like Frank Miller's Batman is his Batman only. I personally loved The Widening Gyre, but apparently alot of Year One fans couldn't handle the joke and found it insulting. Now i'm not saying you couldn't handle it, you're obviously wondering about this. See Batman just got *so* excited after he talked trash to the biggest mobsters of Gotham. He got so excited that well... Yeah, he peed himself.

Now Smith's humour obviously isn't for everyone, but neither is Frank Miller's for example. If you didn't like Cacophony, i guess i shouldn't recommend Widening Gyre, but you know what? I still will. Cacophony is a decent warmup for Smith's epic Widening Gyre that deals about love, trust and Batman handling those aspects. I loved it personally.

Batman did not pee on Batman.

Kevin Smith peed on Batman.

Kevin Smith is an untalented hack. Just ignore this. The comic industry will die sooner or later anyway.

This.

I like Kevin Smith but he is destroying my childhood.

Given the developments of Marvel and DC lately, along with their histories of racism, sexism, fridging, child-killing, character derailments, crisis's and constant retconning and returning status quo, I'm almost hopeful that it will, especially since the animated series do so much better a job than most comics anyway.

Aww did he ruin your Year One story? All you do is whine about Smith based upon 1 review. Grow up.

Like every bad storyline in comics... just ignore it. Smith has been a disapointment in writing Batman, and believe me, DC is aware of this. Year One is still a reference in comics history after over 20 years... This crap that Smith has released in to be forgoten in a few weeks...

Yeah DC is so aware of it they hold a CCI Panel for Kevin Smith and the fans loved the comic. :p Ah ignorance at it's finest. Widening Gyre is a great romance story that *should* be remembered for a good time.

Yeah, I've got to agree with the others when I recommend you just ignore Kevin Smiths work. In my opinion, which is just what it is, and opinion of someone who has read his work, is that he doesn't really know his material, and isn't worth much as a writer.

Take it or leave it, its just my advice.

Your childhood must have been pretty fragile then.

Well I am using hyperbole, but Smith is a bad Batman writer. I grew up with the 80s and 90s Batman and I don't recall ever reading about Batman pissing himself or the Joker bending over for some buttsex. Not even Schumacher with his Bat platinum card went that far! I get the impression that maybe Smith secretly hates Batman because he has written some good DD and Green Arrow issues. Or maybe it is just years of cannabis use having its toll on his writing abilities.

he doesn't really know his material

Smith knows Batman and Silver pretty darn well. It's also in the continuety of it's own at the end of the day, much like Miller's Batman is. It truly is astonishing how people here are focusing on 1 page on a 6 issue arc.

Also it seems many here are not aware or are ignoring Frank Miller's rat-eating Bruce Wayne whos first batcave was in the freaking sewers and how he mentally and physically damaged Dick Grayson with his harsh behaviour.

Cacophony was pretty good, actually. Introduced a great villain.

Yeah, damn those writers for not writing characters exactly the same as the rest of the writers from the past several decades! And Joker wasn't bending over for buttsex. Joker was doing, what's that word... Oh. Joking!

Frank Miller's Joker acted a lot more gay than Smith's anyhow.

Ah. Well, it was still good.
Eh, I thought it was alright, but everyone has their opinion and I can respect that. I just hate it how writer's keep rehashing the whole "Kill the Joker!" theme. But certainly it did have its pluses.

Widening Gyre on the other hand has far too many plotholes and issues for me to consider it good. Kevin Smith is talented, but a bit like Joss Wedon in that he doesn't stray very far from his writing style and therefore shouldn't do certain characters. Onomatopoeia also suffers for being too far into the Worf Effect as well.

Just to clarify, he didn't pee himself because he was nervous.

The incendiary explosive he planted went off hotter than he expected. And because of the heat and the explosion he had a bladder spasm. Also this was his one of his first outings as Batman.

I agree. I felt the same before I was even done reading Cacophony. When he had Joker bending over to take it up the tail pipe as a thank you for busting him out of jail was when I was thinking wtf.

Like a lot of fans, I like thinking that Joker is asexual(or nonsexual, same thing basically). Smith just played on the homosexual jokes a little too much in regards to people making fun of Joker due to his obsession with Batman.

I also realize that Smith's stories aren't necessarily canon but it was still something that I didn't care for. The rest of the story I thought was ok but I get annoyed by Smith's writing at times. It's part of the reason i'm not into his films all that much anymore.

So is this why Batman switched from the old black pants to a bulky nappy with the new outfit? Good for him.

Sounds about right. Batman peeing himself sounds more like a kevin smith experience

It doesn't matter. He peed himself, period. What a completely moronic thing to even consider putting in a Batman book. Seriously.
