No suprises there. But I have two comments;

1. Why is Iron Man number 2?

2. The article claims the Nolan trilogy is the most successful superhero trilogy of all time, it isn't, that is Raimi's Spider-Man.

The Dark Knight Trilogy:
Batman Begins - 374m
The Dark Knight - 1,004b
The Dark Knight Rises - 1,084b
Total = 2,462b

The Original Spider-Man Trilogy:
Spider-Man - 822m
Spider-Man 2 - 784m
Spider-Man 3 - 891m
Total = 2,497b

Figures courtesy of Box office Mojo.

If you are going to write articles get your facts straight.

Also -

The Iron Man Trilogy:
Iron Man - 585m
Iron Man 2 - 623m
Iron Man 3 - 1,215m
Total = 2,423b

So don't ask me why The Iron Man trilogy is in number two.

regarding nolan's bats and raimi's spidey, it think they're probably taking into account awards and critical acclaim as well.

seems like they're taking into account all of the films though if that's the case, spidey should be number 2.

taking inflation into account, both bats and supes are probably ahead of spidey though.

Maybe they are somehow including Avengers even if it isn't in the numbers. Like if there is critical acclaim etc included in Batman and Spider-Man series, maybe they have also thought about the huge popularity of The Avengers and that Iron Man was a big part of that film.

Dunno.

Nope. Adjusted for inflation The Spider-Man franchise is still more successful than Superman.

Batman being number one is no surprise. 8 movies.
Batman '66
Batman '89
Batman Returns
Batman Forever
Batman and Robim
Batman Begins
TDK
TDKR

Spider-Man, 4 movies.
SM
SM2
SM3
ASM

Spidey had 3 live action movies in the 70's but there were from the tv series and shown in obscure countries so I'm not sure if that counts.

If you want to class IM, Cap, Thor and the Avengers as one franchise then that is number 2.

i didn't tally up the number of tickets sold, but i imagined that the supes movie in it's self was a phenomena in the lat 70's. when you considered inflation, did spidey sell more tickets in total?

I didn't take tickets sold into account just totals adjusted for inflation.

Batman is top dog and almost certainly there is a new trilogy in the works.

I suspect they are using a mostly subjective definition of "successful", where its defined largely as "what I, the writer, think is best."

Personally, I think the best measure of franchise success would be "average box office per movie, adjusted for inflation," but that's just me. Also, very hard to calculate, given the difficulty of adjusting international box office totals for inflation ( and ignoring them would make the effort worthless ).

The Batman series got 3 classics so that pretty makes it the most successful in my book. Spiderman got 2, Iron Man got 2 if you include Avengers and Superman got 2 also.

For that matter, what were the three classics for Batman? Batman 1989, sure, no argument. TDK, likewise. However, while TDKR certainly made a ton of money, I'd argue its way too soon to label it as "a classic."

Batman '89 and TDK are classics the others are good to piss poor.

What were the two classics for Iron Man? 2 and 3 sucked.

Iron Man 1 and Avengers.

B89 and TDK for sure, and yea the third one I was referencing was TDKR. Maybe it's a little too early to tell but it being the follow up to one of the biggest movies of our time sort of made it an event by default.

If you feel it's too soon I can understand that cause hey who know how well that movie is going to age, but I think there were enough things from it that managed to cross over into the general consciousness. At the very least I feel that Bane is already one of the most recognizable on-screen villains of the past 10 years or so.

idk, I still love Batman Returns. probably way too much on a very unhealthy level. Especially Pfeifer's Catwoman and the over the top performance by Chris Walken. IF there are three 'classics', BR should be one of them

I hate BR with a passion, each to their own.

I agree, each to their own. but may I ask why you hate BR? even if I cancel out my sujective love for that movie, objectivly it is still better than B&R, BF and TDKR. have you any specific reasons? just out of curiosity.

As a Batman movie it sucks but as a movie in general is very, very enjoyable.

Didn't like the tonal shift away from the first movie and worst of all Batman is a cameo in his own movie like Blade in Blade 3.

This kind of conflict is why I don't qualify either Batman Returns or TDKR, honestly. Whereas even those who dislike Batman 89 or TDK pretty much admit how influential they were.
