Battle Royale Being Remade?!?!?!?!?!

Sacrilege! We will no doubt get some watered down rubbish. *sigh*

Cant see it being kids either, will probably be a future eco "everyones dying because there isnt enough food in the USA" type thing, where each city needs to cull 30% of its population in order to survive! Battle Royale : Episode 1 - New York City! *shakes head*

I don't know what you all think they wouldn't do teenagers. Like I said, New Line probably puts out more movies with teenagers being butchered or butchering each other than any other studio.

the kids in Battle Royal are freshmen - 15 years old. Most of the actors when the movie was filmed were between 15 and 18 years old themselves

the american remake will undoubtedly make them seniors and thus 18, and they'll cast actors in their 20s

I've said it before, and i'll say it again: this can only be a good thing. Who cares if it's being remade? If it's good, great. If it's bad, fine. It's not going to ruin the original BR for me, and if anything, it'll just give the original more exposure.

read a few interviews with Alan Moore, sean. Usually, my contention is that adaptations, good or bad, have no bearings on the original work. And they don't, for me. But that's because I know the original work.

But you should remember that when the throngs of ignorant people see the film, they'll either be unaware of the source material, or assume it's an accurate translation of it, and the original brilliant source gets looked over and trampled upon.

the ending [the dream parts anyway] made absolutely no sense. maybe the american version can help me out.

i think it may have been the ****ty subtitle job on my dvd.

de niro sounds eeriely awesome though

there's alot of people I could see playing Kitano's role

I don't care if they remake it. Just as long as I got the original, who cares. But if it's actually good, then fine.

Well, Ellen Page was a convincing 14 year-old in Hard Candy, despite being 17-18 when it filmed. They could find young looking actors. Even if they make them seniors, I wouldn't take an issue with that.

...*shoots a panda in the face*

In all seriousness though...why? They know they won't be able to do it right. This is a different country with different standards and different social rules in general and...They just won't do it justice. They KNOW they won't do it justice and they're still going to try...*sigh*... Whatever. I still have my VCD. Just let one idiot try to talk to me like they know what BR is about after this movie is released. One jackass talk to me like they're an expert on asian cinema all of a sudden after one movie.

Of all the remakes that hollywood has made/planned i think this one bothers me the most. The original is perfect and not that old and really has no reason to be remade, also even though it's been many years since any major school shootings..there's no way that they could remake this film with the characters being in grade 9. There would be too much outcry from parental groups and such. Whether it does get remade or not...i still don't see an american release of the original for some reason...

ps.. there was a region 0 NTSC version released in britain though, basically made for american buyers. i think it's out of print though.... (i'll forever my copy as well as my region 2 special edition release)

I see alot of contraversy coming from this if it stays true to the book and the movie.Well I own the book got to start reading it.But anyway I can see this movie if it stays true it will be coming out with less violence because of parent groups and government type people. With a unrated cut coming out after the movie. Off corse that is if it happens at all.

Well, I own it and it works. And I live in America, so I'm pretty sure it's region 1. Unless my definition of region 1 is incorrect, so I don't know. And plus, if doesn't work, Amazon lets you return it for a full refund if it's listed as an unknown and doesn't work.

Cool I might check it out then it has Subs right.

Yeah, it has subs. It's a good DVD. Gots good special features.

Yeah, if your going to buy BR, buy this DVD.

I doubt that the American version can touch the "I dont' give a F***" attitude that the Japanese version had.

Remakes CAN work, but not this one.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Battle Royal is perfect as is.

Plus, we all know the US can never, ever make a horror/action movie about school kids being forced to kill each other.

So what's going to happen? They will warp the story and the base concept so much that it will no longer even be Battle Royal.

And the sheer number of remakes these days is just unbelievable. There should be some sort of commission that protects older movies. If someone wants to do a remake, they have to pass it through the commission first. If the idea is totally sucky, then no remake is made, and the original's reputation is saved.

I dont' understand why Hollywood can't remake bad movies and make them good.

I'm hoping that AICN is just wrong about this.

But if not, the question we should ask is... how bad exactly is the remake going to be? I mean, we all know it will be bad. But how bad? Let's go through what we know about the US and horror movies...

Americans have forgotten totally and completely how to make good horror movies. Whether this is down to studios having too much creative control or just ****ty writers and directors getting their hands on movies, it's hard to say. Every American horror movie in the last 10 years (and probably ever) that feature teenagers, the teens are played by people in their early to late 20s. Americans have a real knack for completely missing the point and ****ing up the core concept completely. I'm certain that this will happen with Battle Royal. The movie will either centre around college teens or it won't centre around teens being forced to kill each other at all. They'll probably try to make it funnier than it should be. Likely that they'll tone down the violence or the violence will be unrealistic. Will they go the "nu metal plays as people kill each other" route? They will probably cast people like Tara Reid and Holly Valance.

Have I missed anything? What else is likely to be screwed up?

stigma. If Hollywood makes a ****ty movie, and audiences and critics hate it and it bombs, if they remake it too soon, even if it's oscar worthy, people would still rememer how awful the last incarnation was.

Plus, in Hollywood, oftentimes there's no concern about what are "good" and "bad" movies, just what movies are profitable and what aren't. If a movie comes out and it's profitable, it's a safe assumption that audiences would be interested in other movies like it. If a movie comes out and bombs big time, it's also a safe assumption that audiences WOULD NOT be interested in a similar movie, even if it is "good".

Take for instance pirate movies: they used to be a pretty regular type of film, there were dozens over the decades. But when Cutthroat Island came out in 1995, it bombed BIG TIME ($92 million dollar budget, only grossed $10 million dollars). This sent a clear message to hollywood that audiences were not interested in pirate movies. It took almost 10 years, until 2003's PotC, before someone would take another shot at the genre, and by then, audiences WERE interested in a pirate movie, and it paid off big time.

It's not Americans. It's the American mainstream. There's alot of Americans who get horror or foreign films..it's just the studio. Don't generalize so much. Honestly, it sucks now that people think of Americans as 'ignorant bastards' whereas that's not the case. I blame Bush for our current image, but that's a different story all together.

Anyway, the American mainstream is stupid because studios underestimate the audience.
