Michael Bitton : Battleborn Beta Weekend Impressions

Posted Apr 19, 2016

While I’m a huge fan of what Gearbox has done over the years, particularly with the Borderlands series, the muddled messaging on Battleborn had me sort of write off the game up until now. Thankfully, I finally had a chance to sample Battleborn this past weekend and figure things out for myself.
Read more of Michael Bitton's Battleborn Beta Weekend Impressions.

Battleborn is essentially a first person ‘hero shooter’ à la Overwatch, Paladins, and the like, but it does things a bit differently. For one, there’s gear in Battleborn.

As you play the game, you’ll earn points you can spend to buy packs (in-game currency only) which reward you with loot. Three pieces can be slotted into a loadout at a time and you’re likely to want different loadouts for different types of characters. For my favorite character, Montana, I tend to stack items that provide me tankier stats such as bonuses to my maximum health, shields, and health regeneration. Bringing your loot into a match doesn’t automatically enable its effects, though. You’ll need to earn shards throughout the match that you can spend to equip gear from your loadout onto your character.

There’s also in-game progression, and I’d say it most closely resembles Heroes of the Storm. You’ll earn experience as you kill players (or NPCs) and complete objectives, and on each level up you can choose between two talents as part of the game’s Helix system. For Montana, this can be a choice between increasing the distance of my charge move and adding accuracy to the fire of my minigun when using one of my skills. As you continue to play each of Battleborn’s characters, you’ll rank them up outside of the match as well, which grants you access to a number of cosmetics such as taunts and skins, but also “mutations,” which provide you with additional talent choices on your in-game Helix tree.

It’s all well executed and I enjoyed both the in- and especially out-of-game progression. It’s nice being rewarded for dedication to a character.

The beta weekend featured two of the co-op PvE missions and two of the three PvP game modes, namely Incursion and Meltdown. A third PvP mode, Capture, will also be available at launch. For me, the main draw was the game’s Incursion PvP mode. The story content and Meltdown PvP mode were all right, but nothing really to write home about. Incursion reminded me a good deal of Super Monday Night Combat, however, and I really enjoyed that particular title, so it’s where I spent most of my time during the beta.
[YT]dYILRya5Dgg[/YT]

Incursions are 5v5 PvP matches where you are trying to take out the enemy’s sentry before they take out your own. It’s the most MOBA-y of the game’s PvP modes, but it’s also a bit like SMNC in that you can earn currency and spend it to upgrade emplacements throughout the map. There are also camps with mercenaries you can “hire” by beating them into submission.\

Do so and they’ll make their way into your creep wave to help add some pressure to your force. I felt that this game mode was the most fleshed out and where all the game’s ideas sort of gelled together to make the most sense. The matches were a bit long, though. It’s technically possible to end before the 30 minute timer is up, but most of my games ended up going the full duration.

Despite the fun I had over the weekend, I did run into two major showstopper issues and I’m not sure I’ll be picking up the game due to at least one of them. The first issue I have is with the game’s collision. You’ll collide with everything in Battleborn, creeps, allies, level geometry, enemies, etc. Using collision is fine in theory, but the implementation is definitely lacking. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten stuck on allies or allied creeps or, and this is the most frustrating, getting stuck on some small piece of geometry in the level that ends up getting me killed. Spatial awareness is important, sure, but collision feels oversensitive right now and matters aren’t helped by the game’s weapon models which often take up a huge part of your field of view.
My biggest gripe with the game is with its aesthetic.

Don’t get me wrong the cast of characters look great, with some fun visual designs all throughout the roster, but when you take to the field and start doing battle, everything kind of blends together in this colorful VFX soup. It’s incredibly hard to parse through all the different colors and effects flying around in order to tell if that thing over there is a creep, an ally, or an enemy, and this issue is exacerbated in close combat when the effects really fill your screen. It’s as if someone decided to detonate a box of crayons over and over in your face. It’s just far too noisy. I actually do best when I try to ignore what’s happening on screen and find my targets on the minimap. Not fun. In fact, things are so bad that I can’t really play more than a match or two before feeling sick and needing to stop. I’m all for a colorful, cartoony aesthetic, I mean, Gearbox nailed it with Borderlands, but I feel Battleborn takes things a bit too far.

There’s been enough outcry from the community on collision that I can see Gearbox making some adjustments there, but I’m not really sure what Gearbox can do about the visual noise. If you can deal with both though, Battleborn is definitely worth considering. I still feel the overall experience is a bit more muddled than say the straightforward aims of Blizzard’s Overwatch, but if you’re in the market for a hero shooter with a bit more meat to it, you should probably take a closer look at Battleborn.

The List : 5 Reasons You Can Love Both Overwatch & Battleborn

Posted May 17, 2016

Yet even in all the positive press both games have received, more than a few people have felt as if they have to choose one over the other. It’s almost as if some have come to believe that they can only like one game per genre and that any others are not up to par.
We’re here to tell you that that’s not true. You can love and enjoy both Overwatch and Battleborn! No, really. You can!

The Spring of 2016 has been a goldmine for people who love team-based shooters and has probably been something of an awakening for people who may not have ever played one before but who decided to give it a try. With Gearbox’s Battleborn now in retail release and Blizzard’s Overwatch headed that way next week, players are in shooter heaven.
Yet even in all the positive press both games have received, more than a few people have felt as if they have to choose one over the other. There is this new and often prevalent thought that people can’t enjoy more than one game in a genre and that some spend time tearing down others perceived as a threat.\\\
In this case, however, it really comes down to how much time a player has, what type of experience they wish at any given time and so on. Each game has broad appeal for many different types of gamers with something for everyone. At the same time, the two don’t cross over one another all that often. So youu can love and enjoy both Overwatch and Battleborn! No, really. You can! Here’s why:
Progression vs Pick Up & Go
The great thing about both games is how differently features are made manifest. For instance, those who really love progression and min-maxing, creating unique loadouts, unlocking mutations, playing the market buying gear chests and so on will absolutely adore Battleborn. BB goes far beyond skins and emotes and into the realm of what MMO and RPG players have known for years.
Conversely, Overwatch is for the no-nonsense types who may not want to mess with all the thought required to customize the perfect set of skills and loadouts. In OW, just pick the character and run with it. No muss. No fuss. It is the perfect game for those who want to get in and get going.

BB1_t.jpg

Long vs Short Objective-Based Missions
Overwatch gives players a real sense of accomplishment after each and every game. As mentioned above, the characters are made and the skill selections become familiar over time. Each match can generally be completed in about a half-hour or often even less. Characters are pretty well-balanced as well meaning that every match ends with a sense of having gotten something done. There are usually a pair of objectives to complete on each map with little to do but wreak havoc on the enemy.
Battleborn allows players to take part in much longer missions that require up to an hour sometimes depending on the familiarity with the maps and objectives and how familiar players are with the characters they’re using at the time. With multiple tasks presented in any given mission -- building turrets, collecting shards, reaching checkpoints, etc. -- successful completion can take quite a while.
What it comes down to here is how much time someone has to play. Want to squeeze in a couple missions to head off to face the work day? Overwatch. Want an almost MMO-like shooter environment? Battleborn.

OW1_t.jpg

Story Driven PvEvP vs Pure PvP
Battleborn, at least to this point, gives players the opportunity to play through cooperative story-based missions that reveal the lore behind the game. Between the narration provided by Kleese or any one of the other heroes, players begin to understand the setting into which they’ve been thrown. Additionally, and for those who don’t give a hoot about story, teams of players can face off against one another.
Overwatch is pure unadulterated PvP action. While there is the option to play cooperatively against a team of bots, the overall thrust of OW is PvP -- the bot matches are simply the proving grounds for the true heart of the game, team-based PvP. There’s no question, too, that Blizzard is going to capitalize on the rich eSports potential of Overwatch that also contributes to its pure PvP theme. That’s not to say, however, that story isn’t there -- it is, particularly for those who take the time to watch the lore videos and / or read the online comics. Each of those brings new meaning to the maps and characters in the game as well.

Paragon_Kleese.jpg

Silly Over-the-Top Humor vs More Subtle Humor
Overwatch has definite humor, though often subtle, though it can go over the top at times -- yes, we’re looking at you Junk Rat! Players who take the time to listen will hear some pretty funny phrases that are definitely of the play on words variety. Character emotes are another place that humor can be found as well as in taunts, victory poses, even the characters’ laughter and battle cries can bring a chuckle.
Battleborn is more ‘out there’ in the humor department, definitely something that the slapstick crowd will enjoy. Characters all have pretty funny lines, taunts that can cause players to crack a smile as can the dialog of the narrators as they harangue, tease, complain, and taunt one another. There’s always a lot going on in Battleborn, lots to listen for and lots to laugh at.

McCree_04_t.jpg

Shooters for People Who Don’t Necessarily Like Shooters
The bottom line for both games is that they have broad appeal for people who have never played a shooter before. Between the graphics style of each, the humor of the characters and settings, the relatively low learning curve of each and the addictive hunt for achievements, titles, skins, and the broad and diverse heroes each game has, people who might never have considered a shooter before may just find themselves hooked, perhaps not on the genre itself, but specifically on Battleborn and Overwatch.
You see, that’s really what it all comes down to: Players don’t have to choose one over the other. Both have strong and compelling game play. Both have diverse and fun characters to play. Both are polished and beautifully rendered. But each has its own compelling reasons to play and neither is truly in competition with the other. It is possible to love both Overwatch and Battleborn without feeling the need to choose.
What do you think? Will you play both, one or the other, or neither? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Battleborn : Alani Release Date & Double XP Weekend

Posted May 19, 2016

Battleborn Digital Deluxe and Season Pass holders will be able to check out the game's newest hero, Alani, beginning Tuesday,
May 24th, with her full release scheduled for May 31st. She can be unlocked for 47,500 credits.
In other good news for Digital Deluxe and Season Pass holders:
Starting with the release of Alani, Digital Deluxe and Season Pass holders will receive one Hero Key to instantly unlock ANY hero in the game with each new hero release. To use a key, just head to the Battleborn Character screen in the Command Center and choose the character you want to unlock. You can also use these keys to instantly unlock newly released heroes like Alani, saving you the time it would otherwise take to earn enough credits to do that.
Here’s even more good news: Hero Keys are reusable! If you complete the challenge objective or reach the required Command Rank at any time after unlocking a hero using a Hero Key, then that Hero Key will be returned to you and you can then use that Hero Key to unlock another hero.
In addition to Alani's announcement, Gearbox revealed that players will earn double experience from Friday, May 20th through Wednesday, May 25th.

Bill Murphy : Overwatch & Battleborn - WoW and EQ2 Redux

Posted May 25, 2016

Now that they’re both in the wild, the war rages on between fans of Battleborn and Overwatch – two similar (at first glance) games competing for gamers’ attention this summer. While there’s little doubt that Blizzard’s shooter is dominating the marketing airwaves, our own Suzie Ford recently penned a column on why you can love and play both. But for Bill Murphy, there are some obvious parallels to two rival MMOs from 2004…

and just how the next few months will play out.

The prediction or observations here will seem grim for fans of Gearbox’s Battleborn, but believe me: there’s nothing wrong with being a fan of a niche game. You’re talking about a former fan site editor for Auto Assault. But let’s not beat around the digital bush here, one game is going to dominate sales, and it’s been clear for months that Blizzard’s Overwatch is that game. I’m not even addressing other similar titles such as Lawbreakers, Paragon, and Paladins in this article. The fates of those games remain to be seen, and again they’re all vastly different experiences but they’re in the same wheelhouse.

Bill-May25-1_t.jpg

Ah, the good ol’ days. No, how I see Battleborn and Overwatch will be familiar to all of you: Battleborn is EverQuest 2. Overwatch is World of Warcraft. Battleborn comes from a studio that’s been developing shooters for years and is seen as the “veteran” of the genre. Overwatch is Blizzard’s first attempt at the shooter. Battleborn pulls from Gearbox’s previous games (especially Borderlands) in tone and mechanics. Overwatch pulls from the best games in the genre while donning Blizzard’s own custom-built IP. Battleborn has a faithful and devoted niche community based on fandom for Gearbox’s previous games. Overwatch has a massive audience, but it’s amazingly built just from fans of Blizzard games in general. Something the Irvine developer has earned over decades.
What will happen next is probably clear to see. Battleborn, a great game in its own way, will see a dwindling player base and will likely go Free to Play after some large discounts (it’s currently sitting at $40 as part of a sale with the launch of a new hero). Meanwhile, for some time into the future, Overwatch will make a mint on box sales, and even the lootcrate sales. I’m betting we’ll see a “10 Million Units Sold” announcement from Blizzard within the month, and Gearbox’s camp will hit around 1 million units. These are just guesses, but again they draw parallels to what we saw with EQ2 and WoW over ten years ago.

Bill-May25-2.jpg

Image courtesy of DigitalCrackNetwork.comBlizzard does something few developers can ever hope to replicate. They take a game, they distill it to its basics, and they polish and iterate until even if it’s “basic” it’s so damned refined that few people can resist its lure. Battleborn is beefier, to be sure. With progression, a full (but limited) PVE campaign, and more heroes and maps already being added you’d think folks would be more drawn to Gearbox’s game. But there’s something working against them, and it’s not something they can even fight: they’re not Blizzard.
Like EQ2 and WoW 12 years behind us, I doubt we’ll still be talking about Overwatch and Battleborn in 10 years’ time. But I’m willing to bet we’ll see more Overwatch games and spinoffs, and quite possibly we’ll still see Overwatch being played by hundreds of thousands of players. Maybe we’ll see a Battleborn sequel, but it’s probably more likely we’ll see more Borderlands games come to fruition beforehand… the RPG shooter is something Gearbox owns by themselves for now. Now if Overwatch: The RPG ever becomes a thing, then we’ll just have to see what happens.

Battleborn : Alani Released & Next DLC Hero Announced

Posted May 24, 2016

2K and Gearbox have announced that Alani, the newest Battleborn hero, has been released and have discounted the game to a bargain price of $40.
Alani is a water-bending warrior monk and is the first of five heroes coming to Battleborn over the next several months. Season Pass holders and PS4 open beta players will have Alani unlocked for free beginning today with all others able to work towards unlocking her beginning May 31st.
The next hero was also announced as Pendles, a "high-top sneaker-wearing snake-man assassin" and will be released in the next several months.
Hailing from the water world of Akopos, and pals with Alani, Pendles is a cold-blooded killer. No, literally. This anthropomorphized reptile will ssssneak up on you, poison you, perforate you with dual kamas then – poof – disappear without leaving a trace. Oh, yeah, and he wears a dope pair of sneakers. Get it? “Ssssneaky”?!? Wears sneakers?!? (Fine…fine.) This Rogue’s rogue may be a cold-blooded assassin-for-hire, but Ghalt felt was safer to have him on the team, than not.

The Battleborn site has a new blog post that lays out lengthy plans for DLC, in both free and premium versions.

In the free DLC bracket, players can expect more heroes, three new PvP maps, broadcaster mode, in-game reporting, ongoing matchmaking tweaks, lore challenges, ongoing hero balancing, a new PvP mode, weekly hotfixes and patches.
For Premium content, players can expect all five DLC on the following release schedule:

 • Pendles early access with hero key in mid-Summer
 • Each DLC Story Operation release includes new, unlockable skins and taunts
 • DLC 1 Story Operation “Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion” coming late Summer
 • Heroes 28 – 30 early access, each with a hero key, coming mid-Summer through the Fall
 • DLC 2 Story Operation around late Summer
 • DLC 3 Story Operation coming early Fall
 • DLC 4 Story Operation coming late Fall
 • DLC 5 Story Operation coming this Winter
The first DLC Story Operation features Attikus and his twisted recount of the thrall rebellion he led to overthrow his Jennerit oppressors. Each DLC Story Operation is a highly-replayable scenario featuring one of Battleborn’s heroes. Each time you play through an Operation, the story, enemies, and objectives will change, increasing the difficulty but also the rewarded loot.
Along with each Story Operation comes new skins and taunts that can only be unlocked through playing the Operation. Each set will include skins and taunts for various characters and will not be available to purchase individually in the Marketplace.
Additionally, Season Pass holders will also get early access to heroes 26 through 30 with the use of a hero key. Each hero’s early access period will come with a hero key that can be used on the new hero, or any other locked Battleborn. Hero keys bypass challenge or credit requirements for unlocking heroes.

Battleborn : New Character to Be Released on July 28th

Posted Jul 22, 2016

2K has several new blog posts on the Battleborn site to reveal new multiplayer mode maps, broadcaster tools and a new hero coming into the rotation on July 28th.
Pendles is the second of five free characters for Season Pass owners coming to the game. Pendles will be widely available on August 4th for 47,500 in-game credits.
A cold-blooded killer, Pendles hails from the same water-world as Alani, Akopos. As most adolescent Roa do, Pendles left home to explore and learn about other cultures. Completely unimpressed with these new learnings, Pendles found more enjoyment in murdering those cultures. Even better, people would pay him for his new found hobby. Don’t let his sweet pair of sneakers fool you. This assassin will sneak up behind you, poison you, eviscerate you with duel kamas, then slink away again in a blink of his one remaining eye.
Find out more at any of the links above and be sure to check out the most recent patch notes on the Battleborn site.
