'Jericho' writer sells 'Beauty and the Beast' remake to ABC

by James Hibberd
Beauty and the Beast could be returning to TV. ABC is developing a new version of the classic fairy tale romance from Human Target and Jericho writer-producer Jonathan E. Steinberg. The one-hour fantasy drama is described as an “epic re-imagining” of the tale.
Beauty and the Beast joins a host of name-brand projects in the running for broadcast’s next pilot season, including a Frankenstein, Romancing the Stone and Munsters project at NBC and a Bewitched remake at CBS. Of course, Beast would follow not one but two fairy tale inspired dramas hitting the air this fall — NBC’s Grimm and ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Hmm, if only ABC could get the 1980s CBS version’s original staff writer George R.R. Martin back … (but then he’d probably kill off the Beast at the end of the first season).

I know people might be tired of remakes, but this could be good. I hope something comes of it.

I don't think I'd consider this a remake, but another in a long line of adaptations. I'll give this a shot. I think Once Upon a Time looks great, so hopefully this will too. ABC seems keen on Disney-ing up their primetime schedule.

Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tales, so I'm interested to see this.

I guess the proper term is a "reimagining".

Well, when they say reimagining, do they mean a reimagining of the actual fairy tale, or do they mean a reimagining of the Linda Hamilton/ Ron Perlman fantasy/ action series? Because that was a reimagining of the fairy tale itself.

Won't people get confused? They might think it's a modern take on the LH/RP show. That's what I thought it was at first when I read the original post, especially when the title of the article describes it as a remake, as if it's been on TV before, and lists previous shows on TV like the Munsters or Bewitched.

haha good question, the ron pearlman show was the first thing I thought of too! I have to look that up sometime, I remember watching it, but I dont remember if I thought it was good or bad... Pearlman was great in the role tho!

I remember thinking at the time it was quite violent, although it's probably no more violent than something like Buffy or Angel whenever there are gory killings. It was sometimes melodramatic and sometimes action-orientated. Linda Hamilton's character died at the end of one of the seasons though and they tried to carry on without her, and then it started going downhill.

I'm betting that more people will be reminded of the Disney film than the Linda Hamilton show. They'll see Beauty and the Beast and go "Oh, Disney's doing Beauty and the Beast for television."

The Disney movie was the first thing that came to mind for me. I didn't even think about the Linda Hamilton show. It's a pretty forgettable show IMO.

i gotta let my mom know, she LOVED that Ron Perlman show.

i wasn't impressed, but women love the romance parts.

They gotta get an actress as hot as Belle in the Disney movie.

I'm confused do they want to do a modern day urban version like the Ron Perlman/Hamilton series or a period piece?

What I liked about the Perlman version is that Vincent was likely born as what he was. Wasn't some prince who a spell was put on him.

The other thing about the Perlman version is that I don't think he really saw himself as ugly, or maybe Catherine (Linda Hamilton) didn't either. She saw his inner beauty, and he didn't transform into a normal man once she fell in love with him. Vincent stayed as a beast and never "broke out" of a spell, because there wasn't one to break out of.

The thing about a "remake" or "reimagining" of the classic fairy tale is how are they going to make it that much different from the Perlman/Hamilton series? That was a then-modern take, and had action and romance. If they plan to have those two elements at all, it will still be somewhat simlar to that Perlman/Hamilton series.

Maybe this one will have magic and sorcery?

As I recall the previous TV series didn't really have any magical or supernatural elements besides Vincent and the underground society but I mean that's not really magic so much as people creating their own secret community underground.

Since Once Upon a Time has proven itself to be rather successful for ABC, I wonder if this is a shoo-in to get picked up to series. If so, they could pair them together and put this into Desperate Housewives current timeslot, since that show is on the way out.

When it rains it pours as they say. This show would make yet another fairy tale show with Grimm and Once Upon a Time.

I used to love the 80s show and I hope this one is just as good but with more magic and supernatural elements.

Apparently CBS is remaking that one as well.

Maybe they could introduce Belle and the Beast on Once Upon a Time then spin them off onto this show.

If this and Once Upon a Time will be set in the same universe (and that's a big IF, so don't get too excited), we may have just found a leading lady...

Exclusive: Once Upon a Time Casts Lost's Emilie de Ravin As Belle

Once Upon a Time has landed another Lost alum.

Emilie de Ravin, who played Australian castaway Claire on the ABC island mystery series, has been cast as Belle, as in Beauty and the Beast's Belle, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Details of her role are scarce, but we hear Once's Belle will have a connection to Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle). No word on whether the titular Beast will appear, but Gaston is slated to pop up as well.

The 29-year-old Roswell alum has starred in such films as Remember Me, Public Enemies and Brick. She will first appear in Episode 12, slated to air early next year.

I CAN HOPE!!! :cmad::csad:

Yesterday I thought the idea that this is a spin off from Once Upon a Time was a idiotic idea but now that Claire is cast. Please let it be a spinoff.

Emile as Belle!?! I want her to say "MOI BABIEEE" over and over....
