I am 34 and I have literally seen too many concerts to count. My first
concert was Van Halen in NYC in 1984 and I have not stopped seeing at
least a show a month every year since.
Honestly, I have seen some very, very memorable shows throughout the
years.
>From my first show, Van Halen in 1984 to Metallica (Cliff Burton was
still around and played this tour) opening for Ozzy in 1986, to
countless Ramones and other punk shows in NYC in the late 80s, to seeing
some great rock and alt bands in high school - 86-90 that included U2's
Joshua Tree Tour, Paul McCartney, The Who, REM, David Bowie's "Sound &
Vision Tour, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The legendary Beastie Boys/RUN DMC
tour in 86, Public Enemy and Sisters of Mercy on the same bill at Radio
City Music Hall...then there was college 90-94, U2 a bunch more, Tom
Petty, Prince for the first time......
you know what? I am getting exhausted just thinking about all the great
shows I have seen over the years, so I am going to list the real classic
highlights.
84 - Van Halen at MSG, NYC (What more needs to be said - VH w/ Dave)
86 - Metallica (w/Burton) opening for Ozzy, New Jersey (for an 8th
grader who loved Metal, this was the mecca)
87/88 - My first Ramones show, NYC (I will never forget this show and
the collection of punks, skins, mods and bikers who all coexisted in a
1,000 seat venue)
86- Beastie Boys/Run DMC "Raising Hell Tour - (Legendary)
87- U2's "Joshua Tree" tour, Giants Stadium - (One of my all time
favorite bands and album - my first of many U2 shows)
89 - REM, MSG, NYC (loved the band at the time and had front row center
seats for a show at Madison Square Garden)
89 - The Cure, Love & Rockets, Pixies at Giants Stadium (the peak of
alternative music and 3 great, great acts)
90 - Depeche Mode, Jesus & Mary Chain, Nitzer Ebb at Giants Stadium, NJ
(another classic show from high school)
91 - Public Enemy and Sisters of Mercy on the same tour at radio City
Music Hall (strangest pairing of acts I have ever seen - my and my
friend Pete may have been the only 2 people who actually watched both
acts as PE fans waited downstairs during Sisters and Sisters fans left
after the show - or the other way around as I don't remember who played
first)
90 - David Bowie's "Sound & vision Tour" (Greatest hits tour - I was
able to see him both in an arena - Nassau Coliseum and at a stadium -
Giant's Stadium - such memorable shows)
92 - Lollapalooza 2, Waterloo Village, NJ - (what a great collection of
bands at the time - Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined and these other acts
were also on the main stage - Ministry, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus
And Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush and Temple Of The Dog "Temple Of The Dog
Reformed And Played A Couple Of Songs, 'Hunger Strike' And 'Reach Down'.
Chris Cornell And Eddie Vedder Shared The Vocal Duties")
96 - Organic 96' at Snow Valley Ski Resort, CA, June 22nd (The SINGLE
GREATEST collection of electronic acts ever assembled in the US) - What
a true "rave" in the mountains of California - Loop Guru opened the show
at 7pm followed by Meat Beat Manifesto played about an hour then
Underworld ripped an hour and half set that was simply mind blowing -
perhaps my favorite band of all time BTW, then The Chemical Brothers
played an hour and a half set that was to much energy to try to explain,
now it was about 1:00 PM and Orbital came out and I thought I was going
to literally explode by the end of their hour and a half set, finally at
about 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning The Orb came out and played the crowd
down just perfectly until the sun was about to rise and we "earned that
sunrise" - OKAY, I WILL GO ON RECORD AS SAYING THIS WAS MY BEST SHOW
EVER)
97 - Daft Punk - LA, CA (I had no idea just how fun of a show this would
be - small, small venue)
99 - VP Records 20th Anniversary Concert, The Theater of Madison Square
Garden, NYC (One of the all time great reggae line-ups I have ever seen
- Anthony B, Morgan Heritage, Freddie McGregor, Luciano, Beres Hammond,
Buju Banton, & Beenie Man - plus, Sizzla came out and played with Beres
that was a great surprise and a real treat)
SPRING/SUMMER 99 - I was lucky enough to be living in NYC in 99 and was
able to see some GREAT shows at The Hammerstein Ballroom (my favorite
place in the country to see a live show BTW) In the span of 4 months
Underworld, Orbital and the Chemical Brothers all played legendary
sets/shows at Hammerstein, NYC - oh, 99 was a great year
99/2000 - CREAM 2000 - The Pierhead, Liverpool, England - New Year's Eve
- December 31st 1999/ January 1st 2000 - (One of my favorite bands,
ORBITAL played from 11:30 to 12:30 and they even played a special
version of "Chime" called "Chime 2000" to ring in the New Year at
Midnight - sick show, unforgettable, Yes, I traveled from NYC to England
to ring in the New Year - oh, these were some of the DJs that same on
after Orbital - Oakie, Tong, Sasha, Seb Fontaine, Fatboy Slim - 25,000
people in a tent at the Pierhead in Liverpool ringing in the millennium
New Years - great night for a Yank like me)
2000 - Wu Tang Clan - Atlanta, GA (one of the great hip-hop acts playing
The Tabernacle in the ATL)
2001 - Basement Jaxx, Atlanta, GA (I had seen the Jaxx do a DJ set
opening for Orbital in December 99 in Dublin, Ireland 2 days before
Cream 2000, but I had NO IDEA how good their regular concerts are - they
were amazing with two different women singing love vocals for different
songs - one of the most fun shows I have been to)
2003 - Snoop Dog, Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA (one of my boys
from NYC was tour managing this Snoop Tour so we not only had backstage
passes, but hung with Snoop and his posse at the Ritz downtown ATL that
night - the less I say about that night the better)
2004 - Franz Ferdinand playing a very small venue, the now closed Cotton
Club in Atlanta, GA (they are a sick live rock and roll band)
I can go on and on all day. I have seen The Ramones the most times (about
a dozen), Underworld - 5 times, Orbital 6 times, The Chemical Brothers -
7 times, Buju Banton - 9 times - those are the bands that I have seen 4
times or more - I have seen countless bands 2 or 3 times and too many
bands once to name.
Well, that takes me down memory lane - thanks.
