Hip White People Using The N-Word: Right Or Wrong?

Using the word "blacks" to define a people makes me want to drink. . just a little more tonight.

Wow.

Look out people. The race war is starting on SHH. And all the black midgets with fight the white midgets....

The army reference isn't dangerous. There are thousands of racists who've been anticipating a race war for decades with no luck. A throw away reference on a geek website isn't going to effect anything.

It's a dangerous attitude to have though. The fact that you're dividing up races into armies is pretty scary don't you think? What makes an army of people prepared to defend their race against racists any different than an army of people prepared to attack another race?

Blacks using the N-word does not create adversity unless a black guy uses it during a job interview. Just like all vulgar slang it has a time and place. But when used in social circles by blacks it can be a unifying force that defies racist intent of shame and self-loathing.

Embracing adversity is a way of transcending adversity. The word is intended to create shame but by embracing it the word becomes an inside joke rather than a humiliating scarlet letter.

So if it's an inside joke that's been embraced as a way of overcoming adversity then why would anyone mind it when a white guy said it?

I don't understand how it's okay for black people to use the word -- the word that they hate when they were being opressed and such - and use it with eachother? It's just as degrating, especially when it's your own race. I just think it's wrong no matter who says it.
Even though I think you're completely wrong, I can see why (and many others) see it that way. I've come to expect that from those who aren't part of, or have lived, the culture. I'm willing to bet that more than half of the people in this thread who share your opinion are under the same category.

I grew up with the Nword. I will begin to use it, immediately.
I don't know if this was intentional or not, but reading this with your avatar in mind had me laughing. :hehe:

So if it's an inside joke that's been embraced as a way of overcoming adversity then why would anyone mind it when a white guy said it?
because it can only overcome adversity as an inside joke. if everyone could use the term, it'd be an outside joke and the adversity would not be overcome. thankfully, white people dont know that black people use the term as one of endearment, so its still an inside joke and continues to trample oppression faster than a black man can say "n***a".

Comparing discrimination of modern Black Americans to the holocaust is frankly insulting to holocaust survivors.

Calling someone by the n-word is not a mandatory response to racism. It isn't even remotely necessary. No more than an Asian American's response to racism.

Factoid: Blacks are not the only race that Americans have discriminated against.
Hate is hate. Many white people who use the N-word would have blacks systematically destroyed if they had a choice. So the main difference between the holocaust and current racism is opportunity.

I didn't say using using a racist slur is mandatory. I said the opposite because you pointed out that jews don't use them toward each other.

Factoid: Blacks have adapted to racism differently because they have distinctive history of institutional racism and a distinct subculture.

Presumptuous and damning of the American people. I would think, your American people.

Do not intend to think for one race, yet defend and protect another.

Overcoming oppression by segregating and separating yourself? I'm sorry but I fail to see how it's useful.

Does a black man calling another black man a ****** somehow end racism or help overcome oppression? If it's such a useful tool how come Black Americans like Martin Luther King, Jr didn't use it more often?

Racism has been known to result in genocide whether it's Rwanda, Bosnia, or Germany.

The only thing racism needs to turn into genocide is opportunity.

exactly. i've talked with lots of black people about racism and the n-word and such. they have lots of words that come up with, or alter, so they can have things of their own. and im like, okay i get that. but when you do things that intentionally segregate yourself from other races/people, its hard to complain about the ramifications that occur when other races arent allowed to understand. most racism comes from ignorance and a lack of ability/opportunity to understand.

and most people who really suffered the times of segregation, are appalled at the idea of using the n-word as a term of endearment.

Wait wait wait guys... minorities can't be racist. That's not true.... that's impossible!

I like your point.

Conversely, we are arguing a word and use of such word.

I agree with a point my brother made: "if we abolish the word, we might as well burn books."

He meant to explain that the word itself has meaning; yet I argue - while understanding his point - that the usage of the word is pointless, any any side of the rainbow.

I'm Black Irish, and we do not use slang/slurs to speak to one another, even though our ancestors did. I can see you feel strongly about this and there is no need to have a back-and-forth over semantics.

Hate is hate; I hope one day we will live beyond our petty, archaic, philosophies and lifestyles.

I misunderstood your posts about Jews using racial slurs I think, my bad...

Moving on: I can appreciate that different people and peoples adapt and handle racism in different ways. But hate is hate remember? So while there might be all sorts of nuances between the races and the racism, hate is hate... Right?

I would say that statement is generally true.

Lord of the Rings, amirite????

:awesome:

it should also be noted, that allowing black people (or anyone for that matter) to use the word as a term of endearment, also seems to have given them privilege of still using it as a derogatory term. as often as i hear it used positively towards a black person by a black person, i've heard it used negatively towards a black person by a black person.
