He was the only one of the 90s Batmen where they actually put in an effort to explore his character. It is the only one of those films that it is really Batman's story as opposed to the villain's story. It is about him going from a man who has a personal pathological need to be Batman to one who does it because he chooses to be that way for the greater good. Not perfect by any stretch, and it was apparently gutted from what was originally in the script, but still better than Keaton or Clooney got to work with.

You know, I hate that movie but I have to agree with this. Somehow despite the best efforts of a script that tried to cram in a therapist who just wants to **** her patient, Two-Face doing a bad Joker impression, the Riddler trying to suck sexual fantasies out of people’s brains or something, and laundry karate, they still managed to somehow make Batman the main character in his own movie for once.

Unfortunately, that’s about the only thing they did right. And Kilmer was a MASSIVE downgrade from Keaton. He looked the part, but that’s about all I can give him. Supposedly he was a real A-hole to work with too. I guess we should all be glad that movie didn’t turn out as bad as Island of Dr. Moreau.

I think Batman was the main character in Batman '89, just in a Burton-esque way. Part of what was appealing to me about the movie (and I imagine what attracted audiences) was that it turned the usual hero/villain dynamic on its head. Not only did we get The Joker's origin story like we would usually get with a hero, sort of a villain's call as opposed to a hero's call, but he's a clown, traditionally a friendly sort of character, and he's standing in the light and smiling and being sociable. Meanwhile, the hero wears all black and lurks in the shadows. He's scary and brooding and gothic. He evokes vampire stories, particularly Dracula.

Horror movies, by and large, are supposed to be about the killer/monster while often not showing much of them. I don't think people would say that Alien isn't ultimately about the alien (xenomorph) or that Jaws isn't ultimately about the shark, but those aren't even that great of a comparison because you hardly get to see them. Bruce/Batman is on screen, and he does get to talk and have a background. A closer analogue would be Bram Stoker's Dracula, and that is Dracula's movie.

I've seen it said that Burton wasn't as interested in Batman as The Joker, but I think you have to look at how Burton demonstrates his interest. First, he has a fondness for "weirdos" in his movies, and he shows that fondness by embracing what's weird about them. Batman in this movie is weird because he's quiet and mysterious and stalks the night like a vampire. Even in the modern comics, he's a hero who behaves like a villain. Having him talk at length about himself or The Joker or Vicki Vale would make him seem more normal, and Burton isn't that interested in normalcy.

Second, Burton was heavily influenced by German Expressionism, and expressionism is like "it was a dark and stormy night" dialed up to eleven, reflecting the emotions/themes of the film in its imagery. The depiction of Gotham City is all Batman, very dark and gothic and mysterious. If we were given a clownlike/circus vision of Gotham City, then I would agree that Burton cared more about The Joker, but we didn't.

I will say that Batman Forever found a way to dig deeper into Batman's psychology while still maintaining mystique around the character, by taking on Hitchcockian elements. However, while I was overall happy with that aspect, one thing that bugged me was that Batman was pleased that Meridian chose to be with Bruce instead of Batman. I've always seen it that Batman is his true self and Bruce Wayne is the mask he wears in public, so it should be the other way around.

Preference: Schumacher > Burton
Quality: Burton = Schumacher

I'll never understand the love and high praise for Burton, especially with Returns. As flawed as the Schumacher movies were, they still feel like a Batman movie more so than Burton's and closer in spirit to what Batman actually is. If we could get a full cut of Forever I'm sure it will rank highly among the Batman films.

For me it's a toss between Affleck and Bale.

They both have very different approaches. Based on just one movie (BvS) I'm erring towards Affleck for the most part as I felt he absolutely nailed the ageing Batman persona; weathered, jaded, cynical, brutal, all of that. And aesthetically, he was in tremendous shape and looked the part - tall, broad, intimidating as hell especially in scenes like below

...... however, the Batman he played in Justice League seemed like a different character altogether and it didn't help that Affleck had dropped out of shape by the time reshoots came around, looking bloated etc.

Bale was certainly more consistent and his portrayal much more fleshed out over the course of 3 films. There are a few aspects of his portrayal and Nolan's approach to Batman I don't care much for, but for the most part their approach was great - lots of character development and a really tight focus on Bruce Wayne, unlike the Schumacher and Burton films which had not explored the character so much.

I only wish we had seen a bit more of Affleck, maybe in a prequel or something - showing his descent from a more enthusiastic Batman into the jaded BvS version of Batman that we were introduced to, tainted by his loss of faith in Gotham's heroes ("how many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?") and Robin's death.

Ben Affleck and why

1- Ben actually nails the role in terms of tortured soul/tortured psyche which is what Bruce has
2- His Batman actually showcases real detective skills which is something Bale or any one else does not do

3- Ben's Batman actually is a pure strategist which is what Batman is at heart and Ben nails that
4- Ben actually looks like Batman in terms of comic accurate looks
5- Ben's Batman actually trains like Batman does and should in terms of physical fitness

I dare anyone to say I'm wrong

I chose Bale. Batman Begins is my favorite of the Batman films and his portrayal of Batman/Bruce is the main reason why.

I don't get the fascination with Bale honestly when all he would do was growl under the cowl or yell...he was not even all that menacing as Batman which is what the character of Batman should be. He should strike fear into criminals and Bale's version didn't really do that. Not to mention he did not even look the part at all. In terms of peak physical fitness he is not even as big as Batman should be...in the comics Batman is a big guy muscularly. Bale's character also his detective skills were not even all that great either. Bale was good at playing a playboy but that's it. He played the part of tortured soul well but come on.

Well, if Bale was good at playing the playboy, then that’s more than I can say for Affleck’s community-theater-actor-pretending-to-be-drunk routine.

Also, if Bale wasn’t big enough for you in Batman Begins then maybe you need to understand that for Batman to be as big and insanely ripped as he is in comic books, he would have to be juiced out of his mind.

Yeah but Affleck was properly built in the sense that he had the right overall muscular build and body build to be Batman and his Batman was much more menacing than Bale especially if you compare Bat voices and just who looked better in the costume

Adam West is the only Batman who has actually come across as the world's greatest detective. The others were much less so. West's Batman also seems like he would've invented all the tech himself rather than Lucius Fox. West was definitely the smartest Batman. He might not have been the darkest Batman, but that's not how Batman was in the comics at the time.

Best Bruce Wayne: Christian Bale
Best Batman: Michael Keaton
Best combination of both: Ben Affleck

Honestly when it comes to Batman no one tops Keaton. He’s the only one whose really got it imo. He understood how to act in the suit and what to do with his voice better than any other live action Batman actor.

Bale for me, but Keaton was awesome and in BvS Affleck nailed it, just a shame what happened after.

Bale was “properly built.” He was a ****ing tank in BB. He lost some of the muscle mass in TDK but he was still lean and in great shape. Affleck’s BvS build was impressive but it also made him look too stocky in that costume. Compare the pics of him in the suit to whenever they display the suit on a mannequin. He should have leaned out a bit so that he didn’t look like a Batman Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon.

But Keaton at the time back in the 90s was a unique take on the character like back in the early 90s but personally would have never have casted Keaton back in 89. Because back then, other actors were in the running for the role such as:

Tom Cruise
Alec Baldwin
Kurt Russell
Harrison Ford
Charlie Sheen even
Jeff Bridges
Bill Murray

This was way back in 1989...strictly from the dirt sheets I read

Apparently also forgot to mention back in 89 Mel Gibson also was up for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman too and believe it or not Tom Selleck

According to the original DVD Nolan was alarmed at first when Bale first showed up because he went overboard and bulked up too much for the role. So he actually had to lose weight before they started filming BB.

Which explains his muscle definition/build throughout the trilogy but if he didn't have to lose weight, he would have been much more believable similar to Affleck

I feel like you’re splitting hairs comparing Bale’s build in BB and Affleck’s build in BvS. Both guys were huge and clearly put in the work.

Christian Bale due to the fact the TDK trilogy actually explored the character and gave him an arc. Also Bale was unbelievable in the role and he gave the intensity that the role needed. Bale is arguably the best actor to have played Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Unnecessary challenge; accepted

1. Ben actually nails the role in terms of tortured soul/tortured psyche which is what Bruce has.
When? How? By dreaming?

2. His Batman actually showcases real detective skills which is something Bale or any one else does not do.
Adam West was shown to follow clues and reach the right conclusion multiple times.
Michael Keaton was shown to investigate every chance he got, and came to the correct conclusions.
Christian Bale may have been the least detective like of the bunch, but he had his time in Batman Begins.

Didn't you get the memo?

3. Ben's Batman actually is a pure strategist which is what Batman is at heart and Ben nails that.
Aside from an elaborate set-up to fight that Superman cosplayer, what strategy did he device?

4. Ben actually looks like Batman in terms of comic accurate looks.
He does?

5. Ben's Batman actually trains like Batman does and should in terms of physical fitness
Aside from Ben and Bale, did they show the training of any Batman? Only exception I might think of is Gotham's David Mazouz.

The whole Batfleck situation is such a shame. I genuinely thought he was incredible in BvS (aside from the blatant killing). He looked more like Bruce than any other actor. BTAS Batman come to life. And I’m sorry, but that BvS suit was ****ing amazing. Finally, a grey and black Batman. Everything went to **** in JL so his reputation is tainted by that.

Batfleck’s suit ****s all over Pattinson’s.
