Well, title pretty much says it all. I've been looking for a good horror anime for a while now. I've checked several "best of" lists and have yet to find what I'm really looking for. I watched a fairly short series called Another that was pretty high on the lists, but it didn't do much for me. I've also been watching "When They Cry" which is ok. I didn't know when I started watching that each new 4 or 5 episode arc was a completely different story simply involving the same characters. Once I found out it was based on a video game, that started to make more sense that each chapter was just one way the game could have played out. It still isn't all that scary though. I want something that is down right disturbing...something thought provoking on a psychological level. Anyway, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks!!!!

One of my favorites is Naoki Urasawa's Monster although the pacing is quite slow and it's more thriller at times than horror.

I remember enjoying a vampire anime called Shiki where strange neighbors move into a big house in a small mountain town and start turning the villagers into vampires. The final story arc is pretty much a blood bath.

Yeah, I've seen both of those on some of the best of lists. I tried Monster, but damn...the beginning is SLOW. That usually isn't a big deal with me because honestly, I find most animes start slow, but this was damn near PAINFULLY slow. But you say it picks up? Because that one sounds VERY MUCH in line with things that interest me. It very much deals with the human condition and paranoia and mental illness in general doesn't it? Yeah...I think I may restart it. I got about 10 episodes into When They Cry, and I'm just not feeling it which is a huge shame. It's number one on SO many best of lists, but the whole time loop thing isn't doing it for me, and on someone's suggestion, I did look into how things kinda turn out. I'm glad I did because it sounds like quite the disappointment. How long before Monster starts to pick up...episode wise? Just a rough estimate is fine.

I've already watched Parasyte. I liked it, but I feel like it just whimpered there at the end. From those short clips, Ajin looks like it would interest me the most. I started Monster, but **** me...it is SSSLLLLLLOOOOWWWWWWWW!!! I hope the payoff is worth it. :o Corpse Party looks interesting. What's it actually about?

The payoff from Monster is very much worth it
Perfect Blue (a film)
Now and Then, Here and There (not technically horror, but so dark it might as well be)
Hell Girl
The first season of Tokyo Ghoul (though I wouldn't exactly call it thoughtful)
Paranoia Agent (one of the best)
Death Note (to stretch the definition)

I've watched Tokyo Ghoul and Death Note. The premise of Perfect Blue sounds kinda boring to me. It reminds me alot of something I watched a long time ago called Psycho Diver, but you say Paranoia Agent is one of the best? I'll keep up with Monster and start Paranoia Agent.
