In universe, there is no inarguable best hero and I think that's part of the reason the films work so well. Thor might be the most powerful but Scarlet Witch can still mess with his head, Hulk is stronger, Cap's a better leader, he'll never understand tech like Iron Man does etc

As for my favourite MCU hero as a character:
1) Thor
2) Daredevil
3) Captain America

On a sidenote, my favourite comic book hero is actually Spider-Man but the MCU hasn't done him justice yet.

Iron Man, definitely. Not necessarily always in the best films (although CW is my favorite and he is in it), but in terms of the actual character, he's the standout and RDJ gives the best performance. He's one of the great cinematic heroes alongside guys like James Bond and Indiana Jones.

The Wasp! She's my favorite - after her, Thor, and then...well, does Okoye count? If not, then Dr. Strange is my third favorite

I have to give it to my favorite: Captain America. The MCU has nailed Cap and made him relevant in a day and age where the boy scout hero seems like a dinosaur. Yet, the good Captain thrives to inspire another generation, and Chris Evans just has nailed Steve since day one. Stark may be a sexier role, but no hero inspires me more than Cap.

Cap. I think he's both the easiest and toughest character to bring to live action.
Easy because he doesn't have flashy superpowers (although MCU Cap is superhuman) and difficult because making him relatable and relevant is tough because he's so straight laced he has the potential to be quite boring.
At first look he's not as cool as Iron Man or as impressive as Thor. Personally, I used to loathe the character, but the films have been so good that he's really grown on me.

Agggh...Can't choose just one!

It's either Cap or Thor for me, but I can't and won't choose between them
Cap is inspiring and very 3-dimensional, but Thor is just so damn fun

How are we defining best? Cultural impact? Overall plot relevance? Performance? Ability to overcome personal challenges?

Thor has no doubt had the biggest character arc. He has grown in each film he has been in. Gone from arrogant prince warrior to a rightful king. He also has lost the most. Lost his entire family, his home, his friends, his hammer, etc. Thor has had to dig deepest and grow into what he needs to be. In that regard, it's Thor. Cap, Iron man etc aren't even remotely close to overcoming what Thor has had to overcome. Growing out of who you are while losing everything that's dear to you, and becoming king of a realm of gods while being a saving grace for the people of earth is bigger and more personal of a growth than anything else in the MCU. Thor has had the most heroic triumph of everyone.

However, overall, it's gotta be Iron man. Because every little victory is a triumph. That's because of his pop culture influence, he is the hero who kick started all of this, and all to often, the plots revolve around him overcoming something.

So to rank the top 3 heroes of the MCU, I would go

Iron man
Thor

Cap

Perfectly put. Evans is perfect in the role. There is no CBM casting that I would put above him.

It's Iron Man. Thor has only recently become cool, and Cap has spent way too much time obsessing over Bucky to deserve the title.

Cap
Iron Man (I actually find him unlikable but that's why I like him, ironically enough)
Can I say for third, Peggy Carter? Does she count?

Is this about who is the coolest? Or who is actually the better hero?

Because MCU Iron Man is not really a good hero, he's caused almost as much harm as he does good.

Fair comment - although his near self sacrifice in Avengers is pretty awesome.

However, Ultron, the Mandarin and Civil War are pretty much his fault.

The thing is he does the best he can.

I like heroes who are flawed - which is why I didn't like Cap at first, he too has flaws but they're more subtle.

Having flaws is one thing, but Stark is like the King of The Flaws.

Yeah, he's kind of the anti-Thor. In comparison Thor starts off as a total meat-head and by Ragnarok is a worthy king. He also doesn't take himself that seriously after TDW.

As for Stark, he stops designing weapons of mass destruction but makes a whole new set of mistakes, which nearly lead to even greater catastrophe.
Still, he's pretty cool.

Phase 1 - Stark
Phase 2 - Cap
Phase 3 - Thor

Phase 1 - Stark
Phase 2 - Cap
Phase 3 - Thor
TV - Daredevil
Phase 4 - ?

My bet's on Black Panther and Dr Strange as the heroes that'll steal the show in Phase 4. (Sorry Spidey, you can have Phase 5)

Yep. Cap Marvel might also have a shot.
