Heat is my favorite film by Mann but I've probably watched Collateral on more occassions and it's a very close 2nd.

Hard to choose.

I LOVE The Insider, Heat, and Last of the Mohicans. Collateral is great, and Manhunter and Thief is very good. Didn't care for Ali much.

I am still deciding on how I feel about Miami Vice.

Yeah, I watched it today. I think im going to give it another shot before i make my final judgement on it. Although the film from a visual standpoint is amazing.

I am a huge Mann fan and his movies are all great IMO but Heat is a masterpiece,a crime thriller epic with two amazing lead characters who's clash of wits is a joy to watch, the fact they are similar in many ways is one of the films interesting analysis and the sub plot with Val Kilmers character is also well developed adding another layer onto an already engrossing movie
the shoot out is perfection

Miami Vice just passed Heat for me. But both are freaking excellent. The Insider, Collateral, and Ali are also very good.

Never thought much of Manhunter, and haven't seen the other three.

Miami Vice isn't his best, but it isn't suppose to be, it's a flawed movie but that's why it's good. It's the nuts and bolts of police work, it's almost made documentry style, hence why it's narrative structure sucks, and it's pace is garbage, but the dman movie is so interesting and slick, that it works. With that said I'll go with either the Insider or Heat...

I like a lot of Micheal Mann stuff but Manhunter will always be my top fave. I didn't care much for the Miami Vice movie, probably because I am old enough for the TV show to have been one of my faves at the time. The two were nothing alike so I was a bit disappointed. I didn't even know he did Last of the Mohicans... I liked that one, too. :)

Manhunter for me, something about that film just pleases me.

For me, it was a complete package. I love William Peterson for one, the film was visually stunning as is most of Mann's work, but the music was the best finishing touch. The soundtrack is a must have. I don't know if it's Mann who picks this stuff or if he pays someone else to do it, but his selections are always perfect. :)

Heat gets my vote and in second place, Last of the Mohicans. Collateral was pretty good too.

I have to wonder if he picks his music aswell, I enjoy all the soundtracks of his movies. Like you said they always seem to fit.

Manhunter > Ratner piece of **** Red Dragon anyday.
Red Dragon was closer to the actual book but Manhunter was far superior. The moods and the settings. William Peterson was so much better as Graham in my opinion and I like Ed Norton, I do. Just not in that role. Plus Brian Cox was just as good a Lecter as Anthony Hopkins.

Man, surprisingly little love for The Insider.
