Michael Mann Thriller Starring Hemsworth

As far as like young directors, there really aren't any aside from Nolan who are pretty much in the vein of Spielberg regarding pull and getting free reign on a flick. It's the age of the indie guy right now, where you get a gig as a hired gun for a franchise so you can get the tenure to make what you want later.

QT talks about retiring before becoming too old and being out of touch.

Mann and Ridley are good examples of that. Spielberg is two films away from joining them in my eyes, but many will disagree.

I don't know about that. Yes, Spielberg is a drama man now but his films still have high critical reception. His only bad film in a decade is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and that's basically Gone with the Wind compared to Ridley Scott's last five films.

I'd also argue that Michael Mann isn't out of touch. Blackhat is s***ty as hell but the rest of his résumé is solid aside from Miami Vice.

Mann did Public Enemies while not terrible, was boring and forgettable

I do wish Spielberg would do another fun adventure movie soon. Namely Tintin 2. He does have The BFG coming out soon though

I have not enjoyed a Spielberg film since Catch Me If You Can.

But like I said, it's probably just me.

At first I was going to say youre crazy. But actually his filmography hasn't been that that impressive. He did Tintin and War of the Worlds which are 2 I liked a lot.

Now I haven't seen War Horse or Lincoln. THey just looks really dry and uninteresting. While IM 100% sure their well made films, they just don't seem really movies I would like to sit down and watch. Especially Lincoln which I hear is about 2.5 hours.

Munich has been on my list of movies for the longest. Since I actually used Netflix DVD rental back in high school.

Spielberg is still good in my eyes.

I enjoyed Tin Tin and Warhorse. I'm looking forward to seeing him tackle Dahl classic The BFG.

I also want traditional Spielberg back. We don't get his brand of fantasy anymore. I had to watch Jaws a few weeks ago for my film class. I miss that Spielberg. He should alternate.

Unfortunately, I feel like those films were very much a reflection of who Spielberg was at the time - that imaginative kid still trying to prove himself - and he's simply not that person anymore. He grew up. Jurassic Park was probably the last time he was able to get in touch with that sense of childlike wonder he used to have. Seems like he was trying to reconnect with it in Tintin and Indy 4, but it just wasn't the same anymore.

Which isn't to say he can't still make great movies as the guy he is now. I mean, Minority Report didn't really have that same quality from his old stuff either, but it was still a great film. One of my favorites of his, actually.

Schindler's List changed him. Just look at the contrast between the first and second Jurassic Park films. And I don't blame him. That hit close to home for him.

Though if he still ever decided on the off chance to direct a Star Wars film, I still would learn how to do a back flip.

Mann's "Blackhat" Gets A Director's Cut

By Garth Franklin Wednesday February 3rd 2016 04:03AM
Opening a year ago to dismal reviews and a painfully bad $19 million worldwide gross from a $70 million budget, Michael Mann's cybercrime thriller "Blackhat" has been essentially forgotten about - mostly discussed as a footnote more than anything despite not being quite as bad as has been suggested.
Might the reaction change next week? The Playlist reports that a new director's cut version of the film is scheduled to premiere at the BAM Rose Cinema in Brooklyn on February 10th as part of a retrospective entitled "Heat & Vice: The Films of Michael Mann".
The site indicates the director's cut screening is a one-off event for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, with no word on an eventual home video release. The new cut is unlikely to get over a big hurdle for many, the miscasting of Chris Hemsworth as a hacker and his being saddled with an unconvincing American accent.

Come on Mann! of all his movies to get an extended cut it's Blackhat?

Miami Vice has a Director's Cut that has a boat race at the beginner and also includes an awful cover of "In the Air Tonight" by Nonpoint during the ending.

The cover pretty much ruined the film for me haha.

I wasn't aware of this but Miami Vice is decent at least.

Agreed. I own that version and watch it often.
