I didn't realize Boogie Nights came out that year.

What a great movie.

Yeah. How is that not on the poll? That's easily the best of the year in my opinion. Funny story: PTA offered Dirk Diggler to Leonardo DiCaprio who turned it down for Titanic. Despite Titanic's success, DiCaprio has since called it his biggest regret in his career.

1. Contact
2. Good Will Hunting
3. Boogie Nights
4. Face/Off

5. Idk, maybe Starship Troopers.

I voted for Titanic as the best film on the list.
Had it been on the list ,I would voted for LA Confidential instead.

It grossed 44 million which makes it kind of niche. The OP probably didn't know.

Since I havent seen it mentioned here, I recommend the movie Lost Highway. One of David Lynch's best films I think. If you like his work, you should see this one.

Geez! boogie Nights came out on 1997? Titanic, LA Confidential, and Good Will Hunting cant touch that movie. Boogie Nights is definitely the best of 1997.

Agreed. It's not the best film ever, but I think Boogie Nights is without a doubt the coolest film ever. The steadicam shots, the whip pans, the humor, the drama. It just oozes with cinematic style like few films do.

Of the options in the poll, Titanic. It was overhyped, and then subject to an even-more-extreme backlash, but it's a great movie -- pure, old-school melodrama, with great acting from both leads.

Great films not represented in the poll would include Jackie Brown (my #2 Tarantino film), LA Confidential and Boogie Nights.

Leo really enjoys that movie then.
Not splitting attention was a wise choice, imagine how many will call Leo's role as Jack "phoning it in" for Titanic.

And with all of that I can never shake the feeling of having seen Goodfellas first. I have a lot of respect for Boogie Nights, but it very much feels like a re-tread, much as many complained about Wolf of Wall Street.

Without 12 year old girls finding DiCaprio to be the cutest guy in the world the movie might have never topped a billion.

On that list Titanic easily beats everything. Can't believe Lost World gets so many votes. A pointless sequel if there ever was one.

How big would Avengers, The Dark Knight, or any other recent big summer blockbuster, have been without some fanboys watching it multiple times?

LA Confidential because I wasn't a pre teen girl at the time. :o

I don't know, in my generation some people watched Titanic many many times. Avengers and Dark Knight? Were watched 0, 1, or 2 times.

Wow, does every actor/actress who starred in that movie regret being in it? Kate Winslet, Leo, who's next? Billy Zane?

It would be hilarious if Good Burger won the poll.

Should I just remake this thread since everyone's choosing a lot more movies that aren't included in the poll?

:mag Couldn't see Doodlebug in the poll options...

IMDB and Wikipedia have Life is Beautiful as a 1997 film. It was released later on in the US though, so don't know if that counts...

Titanic is by far the most famous, the one that instantly comes to mind when you think of that year in cinema, and it also won Best Picture.
