American Beauty, Mr. Ripley, The Insider, and The Green Mile are all critically acclaimed but I need to rewatch those movies because I have seen those only once and many years ago. The movies in my top 5, Ive rewatched many times and just recently.

Phantom Menace and The Mummy, but no Magnolia?

I voted for American Beauty.

Much. Except for Mononoke, Perfect Blue, and a few others, '99 has that year beat.

1994 was better than 1997 too.

Anyways, I pick The Matrix. I like it even better than Blade Runner.

I forgot to include "Big Daddy" as well

Johnnie To's The Mission
Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut

The Matrix then Fight Club.

They don't make counter-culture cinema like that anymore.

The Matrix.
I remember seeing the trailers and thinking, meh. My wife (then fiance) wanted to see it and kind of forced me to go one weekend. I have never walked out of a movie more mind blown. It was a masterpiece.

Now the sequels were letdowns of the highest order, but that 1st viewing experience of the original will stay with me a lifetime.

I'd put Fight Club over The Matrix, but I agree those two are the tops, followed by Toy Story 2.

The Matrix had a big impact on me. It contains a lot of things I like in one slick package. Rich themes and a story which challenges the mind, great visuals, characters and of course action. It was lightning in a bottle.

I voted for The Matrix. It was one of he most visually stunning films to come out that year ( or any other year) and one of the biggest influences on modern American culture. However I also love The Sixth Sense, but The Matrix wins out by a smidge.

The Matrix and then Fight Club.

And yet M night never topped that movie, He Peaked his first film.

Wow, The Matrix and Fight Club are destroying the polls!

The Green Mile is the only one that elicited a true emotional reaction from me so my vote goes to it. I even like it better than King's Shawshank Redemption. It's the film that gave us Michael Clark Duncan as a movie star.
