Ok here is another opion thread on the people that dwell in the Shh universe. I sure have an opinion but i'd rather here some on elses for mine alone is no fun when my opinions are disliked. So feel free to post the best sci-fi movie. Made for tv to the very large big screen. I would like to say but i'll let the boarders have a go and stay out of it.

I have two.

Aliens is the first. Great story, excellent performances (Weaver is such a badass in this one), and overall an incredible movie. The special effects look good even today, and it's one of if not the most exciting movies ever made.

The other of course would be The Empire Strikes Back. While I love the other two films of the original trilogy almost as much and greatly acknowledge their impact on the movie world and feel they're worthy of the praise they get, at the same time I feel they're little more than just fun sci-fi thrillers. Empire stands out to me as a truly terrific movie. The characters are actually given an incredible amount of depth and development (moreso than in the other films), and overall it has a much darker and serious tone that greatly elevates beyond the realm of the normal fun sci-fi thriller (which is what I felt the other two essentially were, even if they're worthy of their merits). And the ending is still incredibly shocking, even if it's beaten into your head a billion times.

Two words - Blade Runner.

James Cameron's The Abyss has to be one of the best.

2001, while it was a little too slow for my tastes it was the first of its kind.

12 Monkey's

But tough to call since there are so many great sci-fi films.

Twelve Monkeys.
Brilliant movie, Terry Gilliam is truely a brilliant director and Bruce Willis who gets typecast as a cop 90% of the time (don't get me wrong, I like him) shows some fantastic acting skills as James Cole. Easily his best role ever. Brad Pitt is damn good to. And...you gotta love that awesome and creepy music.

Blade Runner
Gattaca
12 Monkeys
2001: A Space Odyssey

2001 A Space Odyessy
Star Trek 8: First Contact
Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Kahn
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Aliens

in that order.

yes i think star trek 8 is better then 2.

i saw 12 monkeys, didn't see what the big deal was. not bad, but i didn't see anything particularly great about it either. perhaps i missed something or someone can explain it to me.

My faves include

Back to the Future
Stargate
12 Monkeys
Fifth Element
Dark City
Cube

I may get flamed... but E.T just opened the imaginations of a new generation...

I myself liked the first 3 Star Wars films and most of the Alien movies except for the one with Ryder.
Terminators 1 and 2 were pretty good and i liked Pitch Black. I liked most of the Star Trek movies except for Nemesis and Star Trek 6.

I can't really choose a best sci fi movie. For i liked so many. The most dissapointing sci fi movie was Hitchhikers Guide and The Chronicals Of Riddick.

A few that haven't been mentioned:

The Matrix
Equilibrium
Serenity

It's a dead tie between Alien and Aliens. Terminator is also a great Sci-fi/Noir movie.

Metropolis, Brazil, 2001.

(hows is terminater noir?)

Blade Runner

followed by
Equilibrium
Metropolis (the first sci fi)
12 Monkeys (and Le Jetti (sp?) the french short film it was based on)

^good to hear some love for chris marker! La jetti is wonderous! better than 12 monkeys, and i'm a huge gilliam fan, also gotta shwo some love for "the day the earth stood still"!

i think i love it more for the fact that it's a movie composed almost entirely of still shots

^It is entirely made of still shots, although they show lots quickly which makes you think she looks at you, but she doesn't, it's a masterpiece!

Terminator 2 is more awesome.

Of course it's not film noir in the classical sense, but I feel it conveys the major characteristics of the genre. Stark colors, bleak urban setting, pessimistic characters and themes, etc.

T2 is awesome, but it pails in comparison to the original in pure film terms.
