Best single movie of the last 5 years?

I think Cloud Atlas would be mine.

Takes a lot of stones to do adapt something that ambitious, visually interesting and full of heart as that story.

Left a great impact for many reasons.

It was deep, enthralling, diverse & even funny. Great great movie

Yeah, I'd like to see the lists off this page. It's nice to see people actually buckle down and pick ONE movie. It's easy to make a list of your favorite movies so it means more when you can narrow it down to one.

Yeah people should pick a single title.

My immediate reaction was Children of Men, but it's already been 8 years. I feel old.

Cloud Atlas comes to mind. It's a big, life affirming, beautifully crafted masterpiece.

If I had to pick one, it would be A Separation. Smart, funny when it wants to be, intimate, complex, subtly political, and well acted all around. The hand held camera work is a real tool to immerse you into a world.

But honestly and speaking just for my opinion, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men would beat them all and they all came out in 2007 so they miss the five year cut-off. That shows what an awesome year 2007 was for film.

HELL YEAH! t: Inherent Vice seems like a return to the Boogie Nights/Magnolia ensemble PTA stuff, which is exciting.

Avenger is *very* good for what it's trying to be, but what it's trying to be is a depth-less popcorn flick. I fully expect Avengers 2 to be a much better movie, given Whedon's track record.

We all value different things. If you like being challenged intellectually and/or seeing beautiful cinematography and hearing riveting musical scores, TA won't engage you as much as someone who predominantly likes one-liners, Shakespeare references, and happy endings.

I really enjoyed The Avengers. If its the best movie of the last five years to someone, that's wonderful and as a comic book fan, I can understand it. As you said, it pretty much perfected what it was trying to accomplish. I just think some of these off-hand comments about snobs are pretty ridiculous. Some people DO actually enjoy those kind of films more than The Avengers. They aren't just trying to be 'smart' or whatever.

It encapsulates a lot aspects of modern filmmaking and includes several of the biggest stars of the moment. If you were going to make a movie time capsule, this would definitely be a contender to sum up the early 20-teens.

The real problem if anything is that it takes a while to get up to speed. The first portion of the film is really subpar.

The real problem if anything is that it takes a while to get up to speed. The first portion of the film is really subpar.

The Avengers has horrible cinematography. That's for sure. The villain's motives are very Saturday morning cartoonish. Judging STRICTLY on this film, the villain is pretty flat. Shallow could be the correct term. However, the writing, costume design, production design, and special effects are very well done. The film's very entertaining and it's cast does a really great job. I think I'd say your both right. It's very entertaining, but ultimately, pretty shallow. However, its a wonderful Superhero blockbuster and with that genre dominating this time period, a time capsule would have to have a few of those films in there. The Avengers, Nolan's Batman films, Iron Man, Winter Solider and Raimi's first two Spiderman would get in for that reason, IMO.

The Master is still my choice, not backing out, that is my ONE FILM with all of the marbles. However, some honorable mentions would be:

I also don't think Avengers is the best film of the last 5 years, but it's hardly up to you to tell others what to think. This is subjective and if the dude thinks Avengers is the best film of the last 5 years, he's entitled to his opinion.

Love Avengers, Man of Steel, True Grit and Inception, but I'm going to go a bit off the rails and say:

Star Trek (2009)

This is a movie I watched over and over again and it is quite simply perfect. It's actually quite a bit like Avengers, in terms of that kind of four color technobabbly simple sci fi team up adventure. What puts Star Trek over the top for me is the sense of adventure and the balance of it. Kirk isn't even clearly the lead, but even when he is, the movie never becomes his vehicle. It's just well done all around.
