There have been quite a number of superhero movies not based on comics - specific ones atleast - over the years. These days there are more and more every week. In the last few years we've had The Incredibles, Sky High, Zoom, Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, etc.

Going back slightly further, you have The Matrix trilogy, RoboCop and crap like Condorman. I would also count Terminator 2 as a superhero movie, as the T-800 is a hero with superhuman powers, there is a sci-fi element, and the T-1000 is absolutely a supervillain.

Darkman, Highlander(McCloud, like Don Blake/Thor, is an immortal living among mortals), Unbreakable, Star Wars, and Ralph Bakshi's Fire & Ice(it's a mix of Frank Frazetta's comic "Thunda" and Conan).

The Incredibles. Darkman and Robocop and The Matrix are great choices too. I even like the Meteor Man.

The Life Aquatic.

The Six Million Dollar Man Pilot Movie

I have to take you up on Highlander. He's just not a superhero. Does he save people? No. Does he wear a costume? No. Does he actually have any superpowers? No. Does he fight crime? No. All he does is fight other immortals who try to behead him.

And also Star Wars.....sure, it's heavily inspired by Marvel Comics, especially Doctor Doom, but Luke Skywalker is no superhero.

Unbreakable is the best. Followed by The Incredibles.

1) The Matrix
2) Robocop
3) The Incredibles
4) Darkman
5) Meteor Man

Regarding Highlander, maybe he doesn't rescue people directly, but in beheading evil immortals he is saving mankind from an eternity of darkness. Also, he does actually rescue. He rescued that little girl from that Nazi officer in WWII in a flashback in the director's cut. As for the plain clothes, well, so do Darkman, John Constantine and Rorschach.

Luke Skywalker is very much Lucas' answer to Flash Gordon. This is a known fact.

i forgot to mention remo williams the adventure begins would that count for purposes of this thread?:ninja:

I can see where you are coming from, but I don't consider MacCleod a superhero. A superhero is someone whose entire life is being a hero, a deliberate act of being heroic. Looking to help those in need, fighting evil wherever it arises.

I'd say the known fact is that Star Wars is what Lucas made instead of Flash Gordon. And Flash Gordon is not a superhero anyway.

he's more an action /scifi hero then

Robocop. Damn good superhero movie with a theme you can't get out of your head for days.

The Matrix is a close second though.

it's not the best, but I'm going to include Blankman... I love it

Also ranks in my top favorite superhero films of all time, right up there with Batman Begins, Spider-Man 2, and DD: DC

Robocop!!!

One of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made.
