So I acknowledge LOTR as the holy trinity of swords/sorcery fantasy movies but before PJ came along it was pretty weak pickens. I think back to Beastmaster and Sword & the Sorcerer badness. But there are some bright spots. So outside of LOTR, best and Worst Fantasy "EPICS".

1. Dragonslayer (1981)- Still some of the best dragon effects outside of CGI ever, even if the hero was a little weak. Ralph Richardson's Ulrich ranks right up there with Gandalf for wizard greatness and I appreciated the subtlety of the well written story. However, Peter McNicol was pretty weak and the female lead was a bit of a nag. But the sequences where Vermithrax was on film were amazing.
2. Excalibur (also 1981) Best adaptation of the Arthurian legend to date. Sex, epic battles and ultimate betrayals, Patrick Stewart & Liam Niesen can be seen in this gem. Hotass Helen Mirren shines as Morgana and Nicol Willimason plays an excellent Merlin.
3. Legend (1985) You may laugh but in its day this movie had all the elements for an amazing fairy tale. Tom Cruise pulls his weight and Mia Sara was very good as Lily. But the real star is Tim Curry and all the effects for Darkness. I also thought the little kid who played Gump was terrific. Directed by the obscure Ridley Scott it still suffered from some shoddy editing throughout.
4. Highlander (1986) This used to be #2 when I was a kid but once a began appreciating things like editing, pace and acting it dropped. Lambert and Hart were pretty wooden but leave it to Sean Connery and underrated talent Clancy Brown to carry the film on their shoulders. The cinematography really shined. The action pieces were terrific and don’t forget that soundtrack featuring Queen.
5. Ladyhawk (1985) Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer & the ever scrumptious Michelle Pfieffer all lift a lackluster plot to epicess with strong performances in this touching adventure. It could have used a little more sorcery and a little less sword but still a fantasy staple.
6. The Dark Crystal (1982) Frank Oz out did himself with this fantasy tale. What it lacked in overall action it made up for in story, design and heart. When you consider that the entire film is achieved with puppets it really makes the film a wondrous ride.

Honorable Mentions: Labyrinth, Conan, Star Wars, Princess Bride (I love this film but I couldn’t rank it in my top 5 fantasies), the underrated Krull and Flesh & Blood (Rutger Hauer FTW!)

The Ugly:
1. Deathstalker – This one was just bad, bad, bad. Plenty of scantily clad women but story, production value, editing, effects and action were all in the sewer.
2. Hawk the Slayer – Another painfully awful adventure is some woods. Suck barely covers this dreck. Pay special attention to the soundtrack which miserably fails to combine elements of orchestra, western music and disco. I recommend watching this one for the simple joy of watching Jack Palance continually raise the crazy bar of his evil wizard baddie.
3. Dungeons & Dragons – The worst part of this film was how disappointing it was. You hope that creators of one of the most popular fantasy games ever would recognize what is needed to tell a great fantasy tale. Sure it has all the right ingredients, dragons, wizards, magic, damsels and some ambitious ideas but budget, direction and story were weak and the characters were just lame. What possessed producers to cast Marlon Wayans in this mess is beyond me.

I don't know if this is necessarily an "epic" but I kind of liked Dragonheart.

Clash of the titans (the original) was pretty cool. stardust was pretty damn good as well, very underrated. and harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2 is awesome. and I'm cautious to say it, but the upcoming wrath of titans actually have me kind of excited.

Stardust was pretty good but paled compared to Neil Gaiman's book. It didn't even occur to me to include Harry Potter but as a Sword & Sorcery fantasy, I think it lacks quite a bit.

I found Willow kind of disappointing. I haven't seen it since I was a kid but I remember thinking that the creature designs were pretty lame, especially that dragon. Action was alright but I don't remember any particular part standing out to me.

I just came in this thread to say Legend in underrated.

It has some of the best visual/sound effects ever put in a fantasy movie.

I'd like to add that the Dragonlance Chronicles, Legends and the Drizzt dark elf novels are Dungeons and Dragons novels. Why these weren't chosen instead of some generic whatever baffles me.

Though, I have to add the animated version of Dragons of Autumn Twilight to worst Fantasy, and Hellboy II to best fantasy. It has an elf antagonist with a troll sidekick. I think its fantasy--moreso than the first one.

I'd call it more of a modern fantasy but I loved Reign of Fire which has by far the greatest dragons of any movie

Don't know if these count:

What Dreams May Come
Return to Oz

Also loved Never Ending Story, Labyrinth, Willow and The Dark Crystal as well.

I have yet to see a "Great" dragon fantasy. Hopefully the Hobbit pt II will change that. I liked Reign of Fire but I wouldn't qualify it as great. I also wouldn't rank it above The Dragonslayer. I disliked Dragonheart on so many levels and Dragon Wars was just blah. The Dragonslayer was only really good. i wouldn't qualify it as great.

To me to make an epic dragon movie, your dragons need to be characters on their own. I am not talking about a human pretending to be a dragon (dragonheart). Connery did okay with a terrible script but I just thought they tried to hard to make his Dragon lovable. I used to be an avid D&D enthusiast and the thing I found most compelling about dragons is they are threats on so many different levels. There is the obvious physical threat they represent but they are also super intelligent and adept users of magic. A well written dragon to me should be intelligent but devious and dangerous. It should be a clever manipulator of men who loves to talk and the only thing bigger than its hoard of treasure is its ego. My favorite campaigns cast dragons as kind of aggressive forces of nature who like to mess with humans for the sheer amusement and as a means to collect wealth. You rarely best these things with force, you need to out scheme them.

It is my opinion also that dragons make far better villains than heroes. Even supposedly good benevolent dragons have little regard for men and have no qualms using men to acheive their own selfish ends.

Obviously I have high expectations for a 'great' dragon story but I think that speaks to the love and respect i have for the beast. Smaug, don't let me down.

Wizard of Oz (1939)--am I really the first person tom ention this?
The Princess Bride
Stardust
The Neverending Story
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Just to name a few.

If you're looking for great dragon fantasy, it may not be a movie, but HBO's Game of Thrones features dragons and the show is great.

I don't have much to add to the "best list" but I will put Eragorn in the "worst list".

Note : I only saw the movie and didn't read the books.

Maybe I should clarify in the title but I was more referring to sword & sorcery style fantasy. Oz and Neverending Story are indeed great fantasy but still outside of the sword & sorcery style.

I wouldn't call Reign of Fire a fantasy. There was nothing magical about the dragons, they were big biological creatures. Even their fire breath was explained by them having glands that spray two chemical agents that burst into flame when combined.

BEST
Lord of The Rings
The first Narnia movie
Hercules
Aladdin
Shrek

WORST
Masters of The Universe was a mess.
Prince of Persia was disappointing.

And I've always thought Ladyhawke was pretty lousy.

Fantasy is my favourite genre when it comes to novels. In terms of fantasy films the quality is extremely poor compared to sci-fi for example. After LOTR (Harry Patter I kind of count as semi-fantasy) there is a big drop.

Best:

Pan's Labyrinth
Stardust

Worst:
Eragon

Best

The Lord of the Rings - trumps everything by a long shot

Good

Game of Thrones (I know its a TV show but it's better than almost every non-LOTR fantasy movie)
Legend
Pan's Labyrinth
Dragonslayer
Dragonheart
Ladyhawke
The Princess Bride
Harry Potter films
Narnia: Wardrobe, Caspian
Stardust
The Neverending Story

Okay

Conan the Barbarian (original)
Reign of Fire (if it counts)
Immortals
Prince of Persia
Labyrinth
Willow

Worst

Dungeons & Dragons
Conan the Barbarian (remake)
Deathstalker 2
Beastmaster 2
Clash of the Titans (remake)
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Turd

Guilty Pleasures

Cave Dwellers
Conan the Destroyer
Masters if the Universe
Clash of the Titans (original)
Red Sonja
Krull

Good list, but I'd put the original Clash and the original Star Wars trilogy in the Good list.

Star Wars is space opera not Fantasy and Clash of the Titan is a Peplum.
